1. Re: Can I have Acrobat Pro 8 and Reader 9 installed at the same time?
Bill@VT Feb 3, 2010 11:12 AM (in response to jod-zeee)Yes, but! The dual installation is not recommended due to interaction issues. Partially, each of the programs leaves a portion resident and that is where the problem crops up. You may also have issues with one taking over rather than the one you wanted to use. If you can learn how to deal with these issues without frustration, then the answer is Yes. If you expect Adobe to help, they will tell you to uninstall Reader or upgrade Acrobat and have only the latest Acrobat. If the latter is your expectation, then install only one -- Adobe will not help you. If you are not very technologically aware, you may want to select only one.
So the general answer really should be No, but!

BIO-WEST IT Feb 3, 2010 11:17 AM (in response to Bill@VT)Are the only real issues with which one, Pro 8 or Reader 9, opens the file for viewing or can having Reader 9 installed cause Pro 8 to PDF incorrectly, not at all, or something else weird?

The only answer to this is, your results may vary.
Two of the most common issues is one of them (usually the last one used) takes over to open PDF's and even if you try and launch the other, it will still open the first one you used.
Another issue is, PDF's may not open in your browser any more.
There have been tons of issues brought up in the forums over time. Some of them happen to almost everyone, some to just certain people, and some don't have any issues at all. It all depends on your specific set up.
That's why it's not supported. Too many variables.

jod-zeee Feb 4, 2010 10:40 AM (in response to ~graffiti)Thanks for your help. I guess I was afraid of what the answer would be. I'll just have to bite the bullet and hope for the best. If it doesn't work well, I just hope it's not a bugger to undo.
And one of these days I'll just have to upgrade the whole lot!

Normally it isn't hard to undo. It would require uninstalling both then reinstalling only one of the products. Occasionally the installers will get a little buggered so you have to use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the bits.
