This will depend on each plug-in. Many need to be fully installed through their own installation program, while some are just a matter of copying over the .8BF, or similar to the right folder/sub-folder.
For all with an installation program, I'd take the time to do it that way. Could be Registry entries, or even other folders, that are necessary.
In the "old days," just Copying was about 85% OK, but times have changed.

For me, many of my plug-ins are of the earlier type (though most still function under CS2), so they are easy. Besides, I'd have to find the floppies!
