Doug Katz Feb 5, 2010 4:32 PM (in response to dcacrobat)Hmm. Well, based on the information you've supplied, I'm thinking you need a new computer.
What do others think?

dcacrobat Feb 5, 2010 4:42 PM (in response to Doug Katz)Please note that this is an Intel QuadCore 2.6Ghz desktop with 4GB DIMMS with two 500GB PATA drives. Don't think the specs are the issue

Larry G. Schneider Feb 5, 2010 4:51 PM (in response to dcacrobat)It might help if you select the object.

5. Re: Illustrator Effects Issue
JETalmage Feb 5, 2010 4:51 PM (in response to dcacrobat)Oh! It's got PATA drives....
Well, then, in that case definitely use Rasterize.

dcacrobat Feb 5, 2010 6:32 PM (in response to JETalmage)Much thanks for the timely replies. Don't know how this got off topic but my question is really directed towards why none of the other options are available. I seek an explanation as to why all of the other options are grayed out as in the attached image. Much thanks for continued support.

7. Re: Illustrator Effects Issue
Skullmaker Feb 5, 2010 10:18 PM (in response to dcacrobat)Hello dcacrobat,
Please do not pay attention to sarcastic comments of some people that feel they created Illustrator. This forum is for All skill levels
To use any effect on text, first you have to convert the text to "Outlines". Make sure to select the text with "Selection Tool" (Black arrow), then select "Convert to Outlines" (after this step you wont be able to edit the text).
Now the text is an object, and as such, you can use any effect that you will normally use any object (like a circle, square, etc.)
Please let me know if I make any sense.

jay fresno Feb 5, 2010 10:18 PM (in response to dcacrobat)If you create your text in Illustrator, and you select the text with the black Selection tool before choosing an Effect from the Effect menu, you should be able to use any of the effects in the Effects menu -- without having to create outlines.

Skullmaker Feb 5, 2010 10:21 PM (in response to jay fresno)Hello Jay,
Maybe you are correct, but I think dcacrobat is using Illustrator 8, and there are some limitations. But dcacrobat can always try at let us know.

10. Re: Illustrator Effects Issue
Wade_Zimmerman Feb 6, 2010 3:01 PM (in response to Skullmaker)9 Perhaps I do not recall effects being available in 8 and the reason they may have difficulties is that the software may simply not run properly on tht computer as it might be too new for 8 or 9 to run.
I think this might be the problem.

jay fresno Feb 6, 2010 8:24 PM (in response to Skullmaker)Skullmaker -- Thanks for bringing to my attention that dcacrobat is using Illustrator version 8. Version 8 definitely does not have Effects; not sure about version 9.

Wade_Zimmerman Feb 6, 2010 9:29 PM (in response to shunithD)Effects were introduced in 9 so it has to be 9

14. Re: Illustrator Effects Issue
jay fresno Feb 6, 2010 10:00 PM (in response to shunithD)Yes, as you point out, the screen shows an Effects menu, so must be at least version 9. In which case, it seems like Effects could be applied to text.

15. Re: Illustrator Effects Issue
dcacrobat Feb 7, 2010 1:36 PM (in response to Skullmaker)Much thanks for your helpful reply. The problem is now solved but another has developed. All of my Adobe products are installed to the drive letter "E". Program works except for the F1 "help" which launches firefox with a path that makes no sense. Searched for the folder by hand and cannot find it. I have recently done a custom install where the help folder was installed to the "E" drive. No luck in finding it. Your continued support would be appreciated greatly.

Skullmaker Feb 8, 2010 10:01 AM (in response to dcacrobat)Thank you all! I was wrong, it is version 9.
dcacrobat, I am not very familiar with PC; however, instead of using F1 just got to main menu (top) and click where is say "Help". In other words, just access help manually.
I hope some one more familiar with PC environment can help you better.

18. Re: Illustrator Effects Issue
davidmacy Feb 9, 2010 2:45 PM (in response to Skullmaker)dcacrobat, are you aware that Illustrator 9 is almost 10 years old (shipped in June 2000)? You are running a pretty powerful. modern computer and OS, why not try a newer version of Illustrator that was actually designed to be compatible with your system?
-
19. Re: Illustrator Effects Issue
Wade_Zimmerman Feb 9, 2010 2:51 PM (in response to davidmacy)That's what i think that the newer system is having a hard time working with such old software that was designed t work with older processes and OS
