1. Re: Superbowl - how do they do that ? - overlaying graphic UNDER players !
Matt Petersen Feb 7, 2010 4:53 PM (in response to David Zeno)I've been watching that and thinking the same thing!
My only guess is that the graphic is keyed to the colour of the turf, therefore the players (who aren't green??) appear "over" the graphic.
Would be interested to hear a more technical explanation!!

David Zeno Feb 7, 2010 5:04 PM (in response to Matt Petersen)Hey Matt !
Glad I'm not the only one that noticed this !
even my wife was scratching her head.
It's very very well done - I was really watching with a keen eye to see if I saw any abborations like color key errors, or anything that
looked bad, but no, it's perfect.
I'm thinking this also, that they are keying that to the astroturf, but having the players ON TOP of that graphic is just mind boggling.
Hopefully somebody know Matt ! :-)
Dave.
Half Time show is up ! catch ya later.

3. Re: Superbowl - how do they do that ? - overlaying graphic UNDER players !
John T Smith Feb 7, 2010 7:04 PM (in response to David Zeno)Well... consider the budget and the equipment and computing power they have available for real time effects... and think about the movie Avatar
I've read that a completely new camera and computer process was developed for Avatar, so while the human actors were being shot, a screen to the side showed... in real time... the rendered image of their large, blue counterparts so the actors could adjust what they were doing to what the finished, rendered character was doing
This kind of stuff is WAY beyond anything Premiere can do without hours of rendering on even an i7 computer

rejdmast1 Feb 8, 2010 12:21 AM (in response to Curt Wrigley)It's not that hard to do in post-production (not real time). I do it a lot for my NASCAR commercials.
I use Syntheyes for the 3D tracking and Fusion 6 for the keying and rotoscoping.

Bill Hunt Feb 8, 2010 10:28 AM (in response to Curt Wrigley)Yes, a couple of multi-million $ switchers with built-in keying Effects can do some neat stuff.
Now, watch a Jets, or Eagles game, and some of the uniform colors do get in the way of the keying. Kinda' odd to see tiny portions of the graphics appearing in the uniforms. Like a weather map appearing in the tie of the weatherman.

PS - must add that the game's result was fine with me too...
