1. Re: Pattern Stamp tool
John Joslin Feb 8, 2010 2:08 PM (in response to on5lb)You can create a pattern stamp by selecting an area of an image and saving it as a Pattern or you can create a brush for stamping in a similar way or you can ceate a Custom Shape as a vector.
Depends what you want to do.

John said: "Depends what you want to do"
I don't think this will change anything.
I only want to know how to proceed to "Convert" a standard Photoshop image, with an initial format as JPG :: PNG :: PSD :: you name it, as a usual Pattern format *PAT, as you can find into the Pattern folder of Photoshop.
If you can give me the correct procedure, i will appreciate, and sorry for your time.
regards,
Jean

Open the image from which you want to make a pattern.
Select All (Ctrl+A) – you can also select a portion with the Rectangular Marquee tool.
Go to Edit > Define pattern
Name it.
It will be available for the Fill tool and other functions that can use it.
It is stored in C:Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Presets\Patterns

on5lb Feb 9, 2010 8:07 AM (in response to John Joslin)Sorry John, but i'm afraid i'm missing something !
Thanks for your detailed answer, which i followed.
but, when i receive a window asking to name the file, it's a *JPG format.
So, whit is exactly a PAT (from Pattern) file or image ?
I suppose it's a bundel of different images (as i noticed into the Pattern folder).
Correct ?. But what kind of format are the images included into the *PAT folder, image ? how to call it actually ?
Accually, i would like to "correct" an old photo from 1948, a wedding day with about 40 people standing in front of a building.
The building have to be "repainted"...!
That's why i need to have a "personnal" pattern to correct the image.
Maybe you can tell me how to ba able to "include" a pattern into the pattern folder ?
And what is the image format actually.
Trying to include an image to the Pattern folder is not working, using JPG :: PNG :: any except PAT !!!
Sorry again for your time, but i will realy appreciate if you can make it clear to me.
Best regards,
Jean

Zeno Bokor Feb 9, 2010 8:18 AM (in response to on5lb).PAT files are not images, after you defined the pattern, use Edit->Preset Manager to save your pattern as a .PAT file. That said, using the Clone Stamp tool and the Healing Brush tend to be much better ways of fixing images rather than adding a pattern because you'll be hard pressed to make the pattern look natural

John Joslin Feb 9, 2010 9:14 AM (in response to on5lb)You are doing thing the hard way using a pattern to retouch an image.
As Zeno said there are better tools for the job of recreating and repairing a surface.
To complete the pattern story; if you overwrite the .jpg name that appears in the dialog, you have named the pattern and this will appear in the preset manager.
You can read all about the Clone Stamp here:

on5lb Feb 9, 2010 11:04 AM (in response to John Joslin)Thanks, both of you for comments.
As i already said, i'm missing somthing !
Nobody is perfect, and even the fact i started programming in 1976 (!), i learn every day ;-)
It depends on what kind of branch you're working, but i use Photoshop at the simple way.
I will take a closer look to the application.
Thanks again, and best regards,
Jean
