on5lb Feb 10, 2010 2:43 PM (in response to John Joslin)Right John,
I use it already, but because i have a DVD Video Workshop with the original CS3, i expect the same with CS4;
Unforunately, i probably have to wait the original package CS4 extended box.
In the mean time, i dowloaded the product, because it will take about 8 days before delivery.
Application looks nice, but because i'm a perfectionist (!), i like to start from the beginning (to the end...)
Thanks anyway.
PS: I have an other question about a "Not autorized connexion", but i will check it for more information.
Regards,
Jean

acresofgreen Feb 10, 2010 3:11 PM (in response to on5lb)I like Deke McClelland's Photoshop top 40 videos.
When I bought Illustrator CS3 a couple of years ago, Adobe offered a choice of free gifts, and I chose a month's access to Lynda.com trainings. I don't know if Adobe still offers that option with product purchase, but if so, I can recommend it.

on5lb Feb 10, 2010 3:25 PM (in response to acresofgreen)Hi acresofgreen ...!
Thanks for your reaction, and yes, they still offer Lynda.com trainings.
I just received the proposal via e-mail, and think i will accept it.

5. Re: Tutorials
acresofgreen Feb 10, 2010 3:37 PM (in response to on5lb)I'm glad to hear that that option is still available. When I opted for the complimentary training on Lynda.com I wasn't able to download the exercise files (they were only available for paid subscriptions). So I just made screenshots of the video screen and used those to follow along. That worked just fine.

John Joslin Feb 10, 2010 10:02 PM (in response to acresofgreen)I also found this book compact and easy to use – it is not such a huge bulky tome as most of the Photoshop books, but it does what it says on the cover!

7. Re: Tutorials
acresofgreen Feb 10, 2010 10:59 PM (in response to John Joslin)According to the cover and reader reviews, the Up to Speed book focuses on the new features of PS CS4, so it's great for people who already know Photoshop (like the OP, who is familiar with PS CS3). For the uninitiated, I recommend the Layers book by Matt Kloskowski:

Erm ... that's why I recommended it.
Kelby is OK but not the best IMO.

Thanks, all of you for support.
And now...back to work !
Oh, i forgot almost...as a french speaking person, i installed CS4 Ext as a french version !
I wonder if it's possible to "convert" to english, as some app's can do ?

10. Re: Tutorials
acresofgreen Feb 11, 2010 2:10 AM (in response to John Joslin)Hi John, yes I understood that you recommended it because it fit the situation of the OP so it was probably the ideal recommendation.
I do think that the subject line of the post "Tutorials" might attract complete newbies to Photoshop who might be interested in basic information, and I really learned a lot (and quickly) from Matt Kloskowsky's book. It is divided up by chores, so it is easy to go back and find what you need. With a lot of tutorial books (like the Classroom in a Book series) I find it more difficult to find something I already read.
Anyway, I am keeping your recommendation in mind and plan to look for Up to Speed next time I make it to a bookstore.

John Joslin Feb 11, 2010 3:06 AM (in response to acresofgreen)It's probably cheaper at Amazon.
(Unfortunately for the bookstore!)

on5lb Feb 12, 2010 3:59 AM (in response to John Joslin)Yes, Amazon is cheaper, and i ordered 3 books (just in case...).
But in the meantime, i received an original Photoshop CS4 Adobe manual from DHL, with 760 pages...
By the way, can someone tell me why some Adobe links are "ACCESS DENIED"

That might happen if you are logged out. And these stupid forums have a habit of logging one out at no notice!

Bill Hunt Feb 12, 2010 9:48 AM (in response to on5lb)Jean,
Not sure how many have been updated to CS4, but My Janee had tons of excellent tutorials.
Though names and placements have changed, many older tutorials still will give you the concept, and then one can interpolate to their newer version. Normally, it's the concept, that is the key.
Good luck, and happy learning,
Hunt

Unfortunately that doesn't apply to CS4 – too many major changes in technique and approach!

on5lb Feb 12, 2010 12:16 PM (in response to John Joslin)Hello,
Thanks to all of you for your comments.
Just to let you know, i started learning programming in 1976 !
My favorite language at that time, and still is > C/C++ > Superb.
Unfortunately, because of business duties, i had to stop in 1990.
Pitty...Long time...To long according to the time we live at V² !
I use Adobe products since they're on the market.
But only from a certain distance > at about 20% of his possibilities ?
Other problem:
I included an Avatar (our Logo actually) but it will not appear !
I adjusted the definition, resolution as a PNG img, it's there, but don't work.
And under the Logo, i noticed (delete) ? but cannot delete other images.
Why making things complicated, when it can be so simple ?
Regards,
Jean

Bill Hunt Feb 12, 2010 5:48 PM (in response to on5lb)Jean,

Where are you talking about the avatar not appearing? Is this in your Profile, or as an attached image for display in the forum?
For the former, it takes about 4 working days, for avatars to appear. Mine took about six, but I am sure that the forum police were just making sure that my wine glasses did not depict "cheap reds... " Actually, the time does vary, from about 2 to 4 days.
If the latter, then file size can be an issue, as can format. Unfortunately, the forum will not use PSD's, though they can be hosted and attached. For display in a thread, I recommend using the little "camera" icon in the lower-middle of the editing screen's Toolbar.
If you mean something else, "well then, never mind." [From an SNL character, probably before you were born.]
Good luck,
Hunt

19. Re: Tutorials
Bill Hunt Feb 12, 2010 6:01 PM (in response to John Joslin)John,
I do agree that CS4 is one of the major departures in the evolution of PS, but with a bit of interpolation, and some show-n-tell aides, it's not THAT bad.
Even not having it, I've been able to pick up the general flow, just from articles in Photoshop User, and then here, from people, such as yourself. Yes, it'd take a bit for me to get comfortable with it, but it took a month to move from PS 2.5 to 3.0. Same with PS 7 to CS. That's why I keep the older versions around - that call at 3:00PM, where the client needs a revision to the printer by 4:00PM and the courier is on the way. Guess where I go - whatever my "old friend" of the moment is.
As an example, I still use some tutorials written for Premiere 6.0 in PrPro 2.0 - totally different programs and re-written from the ground up at PrPro 1.0, and then I translate them to PrPro CS4 for others. I even interpolate those same tutorials to PrElements, and that is a totally different program, with a unique (to me) interface and entirely different terminology. It's a "big button" consumer program vs an entirely manual pro-level program. For me, it's give me the concept, and then I'll work out the mechanics. I probably answer more questions in PrPro CS4, though I still have PrPro 2.0 (CS2). Along the way, things really changed, and changed dramatically, just like PS CS4. OK, sometimes, I do get called 'cause it ain't called "that" anymore, but people like you have helped me get it all straight. Were it just me, the program and the machine, and I could find what I needed to do (especially with those wonderful "What's New" articles in Photoshop User.
Guess that it depends on the user. In the meantime, please help keep me on the straight and narrow, relating to PS CS4.

Oh yes it is!
I certainly wouldn't want to learn CS4 from a book based on an earlier version.
Too many paradigm changes.

Think she's more or less shut shop... there are some old tutorials there but i gather she's moved on... exchanged a few emails a couple of years ago... her husband had passed away and she was now spending time travelling... from what i gathered.
Edit: "... now spending time travelling..."??? Well, you know what i mean!

22. Re: Tutorials
on5lb Feb 13, 2010 2:13 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Hi Bill,
I'm talking about my Personal Profile Avatar.
I started putting a to small one, and decided to respect (!) the adviced definition 128x128px at the stupid 72px max resolution, and replace it.
When are they understand that the 72px resolution is a myth ? I'll check again.
72px resolution was decided by Apple for his monitors in the '80s. 640x480px definition, (as IBM and other). Long time ago since !
I remember having a Digital Equipment computer from begin '80s, with a monitor having 720x480px with colored background (still have it !).
The Avatar is shown in the list, as i said with (delete) under it ?
It's not that important, but i don't like to be frustated ;-)
About Photoshop CS4, it seams indeed complicated. The original Photoshop CS4 Book has 760 pages...
As many other users, i also started Adobe products from the beginning, but only from a certain distance.
From time to time.
I do use specific products for Image Analyzes, nothing to compare (or to restore) !
The real problem is that users (who decided to update !), have to relearn "How To" !
But because i never had the time (or need) to learn how to use Photoshop at 100% of his possibilities, i can consider CS4 as a bright new application, and start from the bottom (to day, i have the time, and the motivation...hope so !).
Thanks for comments,
Have a nice WE,
Jean

Bill Hunt Feb 13, 2010 9:59 AM (in response to shunithD)Thanks for the update. I just recalled all the neat tutorials that she did. Yes, it was sometime back, but she covered a lot of territory.
Sorry to hear of the family situation - things like that can certainly shift one's priorities.
Appreciated,

Bill Hunt Feb 13, 2010 10:03 AM (in response to on5lb)Jean,
Just give that avatar a few days. It should show up soon.
I understand what you mean with PS CS4. Though I have been using PS for commercial work for decades, and know my way around the program, there are still features that I learn about almost daily - also other approaches to things I've done one way for many years. This is with my old versions. All sorts of neat things tucked here, and there!
As I love to learn, each day is exciting to me!
Good luck,
Hunt

on5lb Feb 13, 2010 11:27 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill said: I love to learn, each day is exiting to me !
So do i
OK, i can wait for the Avatar, it's not a priority.
But many things are so useless, pointless and ineffective...with every application, compared to the past !
Just to give you an example:
When i started using C/C++ ('70 - '80s), creating was a real exiting moment.
Whe "decided" to create our appropreated specific "Fuctions". Limited to the needs.
And yes, you could do "anything", i mean it !
We created an big application which, after been compiled, took less than 50% of a ploppy !
To day, with Visual C++, you need, at least, a CD, sometimes a DVD, and in the close future...a BluRay disc !
Al right, i'm waiting for the 3 Photoshop CS4 Extended Books i ordered !
Have a nice WE,
Jean
PS: I see you love red wine...?
Our preferences are going for a french red wine we drink every mid-day , mostly to HAUT-MEDOC !
It's a very good medium wine, not the cheapest, but not to expensive

PS - some of the material on Adobe TV was probably done in conjunction with Total Training and Lynda.com
PPS - welcome to the forum.
