shooternz Feb 14, 2010 2:58 PM (in response to Studio North Films)You could use AEFX if you have it because it will give a better result than simply scaling it in PPRO or maybe you could spring for Instant HD plugin from Red Giant.

Harm Millaard Feb 14, 2010 3:24 PM (in response to shooternz)Upscaling is always a bad idea, but I you really need to, you really need an expensive plug-in like Instant HD.

Here's another vote for InstantHD.
Good luck,
Hunt
PS - my usual advice is "don't do it," but sometimes clients like to paint one into a corner.

shooternz Feb 14, 2010 3:39 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Sometimes up scaling can be an "effect" in itself ....so its not always a "bad idea"

That is correct. It depends on the desired "look."
Good point,

Studio North Films Feb 15, 2010 2:46 AM (in response to Studio North Films)hi, the red giant plugin only works with progresive footage, that means I would have to convert from interlaced to progressive then upscale to whatever hd format.

Harm Millaard Feb 15, 2010 3:03 AM (in response to Studio North Films)Converting from interlaced to progressive means throwing away half your vertical resolution. That makes upscaling even less desirable, with one exception. The local ophtalmologist will get a lot of viewers who wonder what happened to their eyesight and whether they need (new) glasses.

Studio North Films Feb 15, 2010 3:21 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)So i take it that its best to leave the footage the way it is.

9. Re: sd to hd upscale advice
Harm Millaard Feb 15, 2010 3:57 AM (in response to Studio North Films)If there is a trial version of InstantHD available, try it out yourself and see how acceptable the results are, but IMO it is better to downscale HD to SD than the other way around and often results will still be produced on DVD, which is SD. Now if your only medium of delivery is BR, then you have only two choices. Either upscale to full HD or use less upscaled material in a PIP screen.

Harm Millaard Feb 16, 2010 3:40 AM (in response to Studio North Films)That is only a matter of time, although with RedGiant that may be much longer than you want, but maybe you can run the trial in XP compatibility mode. Looks worth the effort. MB Looks had a similar problem, but running in compatibility mode solved that issue.
