ID CS4 Constant crashing... is it MathType eps files?

      ID CS4 6.0.4. Mac OSX 10.6.2.

I have a book that's been working fine for several weeks, and a workflow that I've been using for years where I end up with eps files from MS Word's equation editor, converted and reformatted in Word 2004 using MathType 6.0, and exported as eps files. One day last week I started getting crashes when trying to export the ID book as PDF. The last message in the PDF export dialog before the crash is the name of the last graphic in a file preceding one particular document, which happens to contain a number of MathType eps files. For several weeks this document has behaved normally, exported fine, and no new equations have been added.

if I select some of the doucments in the book, not including the problem document, I can successfully export those. Oddly, when I select just the problem file in the book, I can export it too. It's only when I try to export it with other documents that the program crashes.

I get a very long crash report every time the program crashes, but the code in there does not really give me much help.

I used to have a work-around by running problem MathType eps files through Acrobat Distiller, and replacing the eps files with the new pdf. Acrobat Distiller no longer is working on ANY MathType eps file. More civilized than Indesign, it gives an error message rather than crashing:

%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: setdistillerparams; ErrorInfo: PDFXOutputIntentProfile setdistillerparams ]

I tried exporting the problem file as inx and idml, and the resulting files can't even be opened -- they crash Indesign on opening. (The original indd file does open, it crashes on pdf export.) If I hide the MathType eps files by moving them to another folder, Indesign complains about the missing links but happily opens the inx or idml files (with gray boxes). If I then use the link panel to relink to any of the missing files, the program crashes.

I've deleted preferences, I've cleaned font caches, I've replaced my "Symbol" font with a Time Machine backup from last fall, I've updated MathType with the most current Mac version. I've tried using the Symbol font MathType supplies, and Adobe's Symbol font. I've opened and resaved every MathType eps file.

Any other ideas? Might there be any key words I could look for in the crash report that help identify what the problem is?

      Thanks for any ideas.
