3. Re: CS3 or CS4, what to do?
gold987987987 Feb 21, 2010 10:41 PM (in response to shooternz)I'm too scared to buy any Adobe product as soon as it comes out. I feel like it's beta software for the first six months until they patch everything. If CS5 isn't working then I can't make money. I've already got CS3 but I could get CS4 for dirt cheap.

4. Re: CS3 or CS4, what to do?
shooternz Feb 21, 2010 10:59 PM (in response to gold987987987)I understand totally.
I always keep prior versions running and productive (earning) while I break in latest versions. ie.I go thru a frustration process with the new version but it always gets there.
I still earn from CS2/CS3 and CS4
FWI CS4 is great in my experience.
My reason to recommend hanging out for CS5 is because of the 64bit "leap". Hardware and software change at the same time. Be assured that I will be keeping the other versions operational until I have CS5 ironed out.

Matt Petersen Feb 22, 2010 12:12 AM (in response to gold987987987)I'm on 3 at work and 4 at home.
Unless there is a feature in 4 that you really want, and if 3 is working fine for you, I'd probably just wait till the second or third patch of CS5 before moving across.

Curt Wrigley Feb 22, 2010 1:14 AM (in response to Matt Petersen)If you use Cineform a lot you are probably good sticking with CS3 until you are comfortable going with CS5 whenever it comes out.

gold987987987 Feb 22, 2010 7:35 AM (in response to Curt Wrigley)Does Cineform not play with CS4 so nicely? The only reason I'm interested in CS4 is that Premiere is now a 64bit program and should offer some benefits right?

Ann Bens Feb 22, 2010 9:01 AM (in response to gold987987987)CS4 plays very nicely with Cineform avi's
CS4 is not 64 bits but 32 bits optimized for 64 bits Operating System.

10. Re: CS3 or CS4, what to do?
ECS_1 Feb 22, 2010 9:09 AM (in response to gold987987987)A lot of people love CS4 but I have constant crashes on almost all of the CS4 suite (apart fom Photoshop and Soundbooth, which seem fine).
For me, CS4 is an absolute write-off in terms of doing serious work. It doesn't matter whether I use my Dell PC (Windows XP Pro) or my Toshiba laptop (Windows XP MCE), the only difference is that the crashes are caused by different things, the one thing both machines have in common is that CS4 crashes constantly, whereas CS3 is relatively stable.
Others haven't had the same experience so maybe I am just unlucky, but I use CS3 for everything.
I may go over to Windows 7 and then try CS4 again, see if it's any better on that platform.

Bill Gehrke Feb 22, 2010 9:58 AM (in response to gold987987987)I have a question for you, why are you considering Windows 7 Ultimate? Also be aware that CS4 does require more CPU and memory.
You are in pretty bood shape in that you have 8 GB of RAM and your overclocked Q6600. Take a look at my PPBM4 Results web page and see two scores for "JB Q6600 PC" the first score with Vista 64 and after a upgrading to Win 7 64 Pro he got an 18% improvement. I only got 9% myself. Your system should run CS4 fine like most of the mid-to-top scorers on the list.

13. Re: CS3 or CS4, what to do?
gold987987987 Feb 22, 2010 10:59 AM (in response to Bill Gehrke)I'm not considering Windows 7. I've already purchased the Ultimate x64 version. I'm only worrying about CS3 or CS4.

14. Re: CS3 or CS4, what to do?
Bill Gehrke Feb 22, 2010 12:09 PM (in response to gold987987987)I am assuming you mean the now obsolete Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Too bad!

15. Re: CS3 or CS4, what to do?
gold987987987 Feb 22, 2010 12:21 PM (in response to Bill Gehrke)I guess that read wrong. I should have said "I'm not considering Windows 7 because I've fully taken the plunge and purchased the Windows 7 Ultimate X64." Vista was never even a consideration.

16. Re: CS3 or CS4, what to do?
jpleong Feb 22, 2010 4:16 PM (in response to gold987987987)CS4 has been a mixed bag for me. My main complaint has been the actual REMOVAL of CS3 features (good-bye Ultra, Redrock M2 support, and multiple cameras in On-Location) because they ran out of time to get them to "fit" in the CS4 shell/workflow while focusing development time on completely frivolous new features (like speech-to-text and "export" in OnLocation) that are broken. Cineform has been really clunky, too, with CS4 and I'm now under the impression that it is ALSO Adobe's fault (read this: http://techblog.cineform.com/?p=2708).
There is, however, a strong case to be made for CS4 -specifically batch encoding via Adobe Media Encoder (a feature I cannot live without) and the addition of AVCHD support.
That said, I still have CS3 on my system because of some of the aforementioned missing features in CS4. If you can live without batch-encode/AME (you already have AVCHD support via Cineform) I'd wait until CS5 which is... right around the corner.

Bill Gehrke Feb 22, 2010 5:12 PM (in response to gold987987987)I have seen a date of April 10th for CS5, do not know if it is real or not but that gives us a starting point to dream about.
