1. Re: Word import paragraph style problem; anyone else?
P Spier Feb 24, 2010 10:45 AM (in response to davepeattie)I've not heard of this, myself. Two things I'd suggest making sure all changes have been accepted, then do a Save As in word to re-write the file. It sounds like it might be a corrupt prefs issue, too, but not likley on two machines on different platforms.

2. Re: Word import paragraph style problem; anyone else?
davepeattie Feb 24, 2010 11:03 AM (in response to P Spier)Yes, I checked to make sure all changes had been accepted, and they were. And I tried to see if it was just one portion causing a problem, breaking the file up into
different parts and doing a Save As, but that didn't work either. <sigh>
I tried on multiple Mac machines and PC machines. Consistently a problem.

3. Re: Word import paragraph style problem; anyone else?
davepeattie Feb 24, 2010 11:21 AM (in response to davepeattie)I've figured out a solution, although not the problem: The files provided by the client are broken down by chapter (this is a book); I'd merged
all the files into one to simplify the import process. If I import each of the (many) separate files, the problem does not occur. I assume that this means the problem is in Word, but the file looks fine in Word, and the paragraph style assignments are fine there as well.

P Spier Feb 24, 2010 11:23 AM (in response to davepeattie)Sometimes saving as RTF will solve things, too, but not always.

davepeattie Feb 24, 2010 11:45 AM (in response to P Spier)YES! Saving as an RTF file did it! Thank you, Peter.

6. Re: Word import paragraph style problem; anyone else?
[Jongware] Feb 24, 2010 12:24 PM (in response to davepeattie)Correction: it sometimes works ...
When I noticed this new behaviour (new, as in, the same file would import just fine into CS3!), I changed my workflow to use RTF exports from Word instead. Alas -- some documents that don't import well as Word do not automatically import okay as RTF. And the other way around.
As we still have running CS3s, we can always just give up, import the file into CS3, save, and open that with CS4.
I filed a tech support case just the other week, with a sample file.
