    My questions regards Camera Raw

    rollsnut Community Member

I am posting this to both the PhotoShop and Lightroom forums. I use PhotoShop CS4 and Lightroom 1.1 on a Windows XP OS.

      My questions regards Camera Raw.

Question 1: If I open a RAW file in PhotoShop will the properties remain if I later open it in Lightroom, and vise-versa. Previously I had used Canon’s DPP and once I opened files in PhotoShop it was at square one. I concluded this was due to different manufacturers. I can adjust to that. Now that I am staying with just Adobe products I want to make sure I don’t have to do everything twice.

Question 2: Using Bridge I have opened some jpg’s in Camera Raw and manipulated them. It seemed to work better if I clicked “Done” rather than Save Image (if I need to save it in another directory).

Question 3: If I am working in PhotoShop and would either like to open a Raw file or manipulate a jpg in Camera Raw, is it possible to open Camera Raw without having to use Bridge?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Both ACR and LR use the same rendering engine and write edits to metadata or a sidecar file and leave the original data intact.

So they are complementary and compatible.

I don't know a way to open a raw file other using Bridge and Ctrl+R

The Done button just applies the changes and dismisses the dialog; the Save button gives saving options.

An important distinction between "Done" and "Save":

"Done" applies the edits as ACR/Lr-readable metadata. The file itself isn't changed, so if you view it elsewhere it appears unmodified.

"Save" rewrites the file with the edits incorporated (and recompresses - so don't do that unless you have to).

As for opening jpegs in ACR: a simple Open will do it as long as you have ACR preferences set to "always open supported jpegs". Same goes for opening them from Windows Explorer.

              Good point on the Save.

I forgot about the setting to open JPEGs in ACR but I don't want them to do that most of the time anyway.

Me neither. But I use it a lot with TIFFs and that works the same way. Mostly for ACR sharpening which I still find superior to anything inside Photoshop.

My philosophy on jpegs is that it's a final output format - use once only.

In Photoshop File > Open or Control-O directed to a raw file type (such as .cr2 or .nef) should cause it to open in camera raw.

Use Photoshop's File > Open As to open jpegs in camera raw from photoshop:  File > Open As, navigate to the desired jpeg file(s) then select Camera Raw in the Open As at the bottom of the open dialog box.

Bridge need not be open for either.
