1. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC Mar 1, 2010 5:07 AM (in response to Peter_McC)As there have been no replies to this question I thought I'd ask if anyone has successfully
used CS4 as the editor called from the Elements Organizer using Ctrl/H or any other method.
Any help would be appreciated.

99jon Mar 1, 2010 5:15 AM (in response to Peter_McC)In Organizer try selecting:
Edit > Preferences > Editing
Check the box Use a Supplementary Editing Application
Browse to CS4 Editor
Click OK
Let us know if that works

99jon Mar 1, 2010 8:32 AM (in response to Peter_McC)Hi Peter
Sorry I can’t think of any more suggestions although I am a little perplexed at your reference to Bridge as you previously claimed to be using Windows 7.

5. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC Mar 1, 2010 8:41 AM (in response to Peter_McC)A further experiment: I have been testing this on jpeg images as I realise there may be some complications with Raw.
When I choose edit in Photoshop from the PSE8 organiser it appears to dublicate the image as xxx-edited-1.jpg. This opens in CS4.
When I close CS4 and save the file the edited-1 version disappears from the folder and PSE8 retained the red edit in progress bar. I have to close PSE8 at this point and ignore the warning. When I reopen the PSE8 Organizer the editited-1 thumbnail is there but it is disconnected as there is no file file.
If I were to also do a Save As from CS4 and neme it edited-2 then that file remains in the folder but would have to be added to the PSE8 organizer by adding unmanaged files from the folder. This solution clearly has major drawbacks in that the Organizer has to be closed, reopened and the disconnected file removed. I would then have to add the new file to a stack rather than it being automatically included in a version set.
As I say I am keen to know if anyone has successfully used CS4 from PSE Organizer.
Thanks.

6. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC Mar 1, 2010 8:43 AM (in response to 99jon)Yes, I can use Adobe Bridge CS4 with Windows 7. I haven't had any problem with this.
For the record I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

7. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
99jon Mar 1, 2010 8:50 AM (in response to Peter_McC)If you are working with RAW files I really don’t know why you are using Organizer rather than Lightroom which fully integrates with CS4, edits non-destructively and both applications also run on 64 bit. The Lightroom Library is a much more powerful DAM than Organizer although a bit more expensive thatn PSE8. If you are interested the beta version of Lightroom 3 is available to test freely until the end of April.

8. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC Mar 1, 2010 8:57 AM (in response to 99jon)I have been a long time user of PSE and have only recently upgraded to CS4. I do work in RAW but not all the time. I only mentioned it to say the even in the simple situation of editing a jpeg image from the PSE Organizer it doesn't work.
I may purchase Light Room some time in the future but it is an additional investment that I don't want to commit to at this point in time.
Right now I just want to get Organizer and CS4 working as the Help content says they should.
Thanks

99jon Mar 1, 2010 9:02 AM (in response to Peter_McC)Hi again Peter
I appreciate you have made a huge investment of time in building up a PSE catalog but when working with RAW files your set up, IMHO is a very poor workflow.
I really hope you find a suitable work-around.

11. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
99jon Mar 1, 2010 9:26 AM (in response to Peter_McC)Peter I would love to find a solution for you.
There has always been a bug with PSE7 requiring edited RAW images from ACR to be manually imported back into PSE Organizer. This may apply to Jpegs and could have rolled-over into PSE8.
As PSE8 is fully supported I suggest you raise a ticket with Adobe Support through the contact link but it does not guarantee a solution to your problem.
This Adobe tech Note gives further details.

Peter_McC Mar 1, 2010 9:35 AM (in response to 99jon)Thanks. I checked out this note but my problem has nothing to do with RAW or using ACR.
I'll raise a support ticked.

Peter_McC Mar 11, 2010 2:57 PM (in response to Peter_McC)Just to keep you updated.....
I am working with support for the last week or so. After having deleted and recreated verious preferences files, I have got to completely uninstalling and reinstalling premire elements, photoshop elements and CS4 and still the problem remains.
Up to this point no-one has told me that editing with Photoshop CS from PSE8 Organizer using Ctrl-H actually works (on Windows 7).
I would be interested to hear from anyone who has done this successfully.

johnrellis Mar 12, 2010 9:32 PM (in response to Peter_McC)It works with my PSE 8 on Windows 7 (32-bit). Try doing File > Save rather than File > Save As?

15. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC Mar 13, 2010 12:23 AM (in response to johnrellis)Thanks John. At least I know that it works for someone.
I have tried doing a 'save' as well as 'save as'. But unfortunately it doesn't work either.
In fact I have tried a 'save' AND a 'save as'. The 'saved' file gets deleted and therefore disconnected from the organizer. The 'save as' file remains but isn't seen by the organiser. If I then do a windows file copy or rename to the filename that organizer expects then this fixes the problem. The workflow is very long and cumbersome.
Original file = file.jpg
Edit in CS4. File-edited-1 gets created by organizer and CS4 opens with this file.
Do the edits.
Do a 'save as' to the desktop.
Close CS4.
Organizer has the red bar across the thumbnail.
Exit organizer with a dire warning that an edit is still in progress.
Move file=edited-1.jpg from the desktop into the correct directory.
Open the Organizer and the image is there in a version set with the original.
Can't be doing this each time I want to edit an image.
Having reinstalled PSE8 and CS4 I am currently waiting for support to come up with something else to try.

16. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
johnrellis Mar 13, 2010 6:49 PM (in response to Peter_McC)Are you running the 32-bit version of Photoshop CS4 or the 64-bit version? I believe there should be two items on the Start menu, one that's "Adobe Photoshop CS4" and one that's "Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64-bit).
-
17. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC Mar 14, 2010 12:39 AM (in response to johnrellis)I'm running 64-bit.

18. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
johnrellis Mar 14, 2010 4:23 AM (in response to Peter_McC)Try running the 32-bit version of Photoshop CS4 by manually launching it from the Windows Start menu, before you invoke the edit command in the PSE Organizer. PSE is a 32-bit program, and there may be some incompatibility between 32-bit PSE and 64-bit CS4.

19. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC Mar 14, 2010 10:56 AM (in response to johnrellis)Good suggestion ... but ... just tried it and unfortunately no change. The organizer doesn't recognise that the edit is completed and the file vanishes without trace.

20. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC Mar 15, 2010 5:37 AM (in response to johnrellis)Some more information:
I am still working with support on this and ther has been some progress.
I find that if I avoid using a Save but use a Save As to a different location then the edit works as intended and a correct version set is created. I can then use Organizer to move the file to its correct location. If I was to attempt to save as in the original folder then it doesn't work even if I save with a different name.
If I do a Save As into a subfolder of the original location it doesn't work but if I save as to a different drive then it does.
I am now thinking that there may be something strange in the properties of my drive.

22. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC Mar 20, 2010 9:08 AM (in response to potshots)Yes, of course, so does mine.
If you look earlier in the discussion you will see that the problem is not invoking the CS4 editor it is that Organizer is not behaving correctly when the edit is complete.

25. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Peter_McC May 13, 2010 2:17 PM (in response to Klaus_x69)Sorry, I don't have a good answer for you. By coincidence Adobe closed my support case today. In the absence of any progress, I said that I was considering using Lightroom instead of Elements to catalogue my images.
I am now giving up on Elements and using Lightroom, which is significantly better at cataloguing but unfortunately also siginficantly more expensive.
If you are willing to pay the money I would highly recommend Lightroom 3 ... I'm using the Beta but will purchase when it is released.

28. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
neilmorris94 Nov 8, 2010 9:26 AM (in response to Peter_McC)The solution (which works with element's ed
itor) is to make a copy of the editor .exe file and rename it.
Select the renamed file in the organiser and the editor will load. It works because elements is fooled into thinking it is another unrelated external program!

29. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Tams Cats Nov 8, 2010 1:02 PM (in response to neilmorris94)Thanks for the quick reply. I can try that (rename editor) when I get home, but does renaming the elements editor fix the problem I have with using CS3 to
create/save .psd files & having them viewable/usable at a later date? And does that fix the problem of the thumbnail retaining the red "editing" line even after I close out CS3? I like PSE for it's organizer & the print options in editor, but I use CS3 (& CS5 once I load it) for most adjustments.
Also, I am unable to open files in Lightroom from PSE8, never had a problem from PSE6.
thanks

30. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
Tams Cats Nov 10, 2010 9:36 AM (in response to neilmorris94)Just want to make sure I have this right - I go to the folder that has Elements in it, rename the editor.exe file to something else, & then select that as an external editor in PSE8 (Edit tab).
Before I do this, how does this affect how CS3 saves .psd files to the organizer & being able to open them in organizer? S(orry, I like to understand what I'm doing & not being a programmer sometimes it takes a bit to make sense of it all.)
Would the fact I may not have turned off "Norton" prior to loading PSE8 have anything to do with these problems?
Thanks for the help!
Tammy:)

31. Re: Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer
dmyhre Feb 2, 2011 10:34 AM (in response to neilmorris94)To be clear, you need to create a copy of the Photoshop CS4 exe ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe")
, then link the copied exe (e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop-PSE.exe") to photoshop elements
Edit -> Preferences -> Editing
Once that is done, you can then edit photos from the elements organizer in CS4 by using the Edit -> Edit with Photoshop-PSE. One thing that makes this workaround confusing is that you will have two options to editing in photoshop in the edit menu. Make sure you choose the one that is the copied exe.
For reference, I am using
- Win7 x64
- CS4
- PSE 9
NOTE: this is a total hack and I can't believe Adobe has not fixed this yet. I mean, come on, both products are created by them and they can't even get them to work together (this has been an issues for at least a year or two). If you upgrade to CS5, this hack will also break, because PSE is directly referencing the CS4 exe. Also, if Adobe releases a patch that updates the photoshop.exe file, this hack will need to be redone, otherwise you would be using the unpatched version of photoshop. VERY LAME. But, at least we can edit photos again.
