If you're in a later version, post back here.

Don Canard Mar 22, 2010 6:14 PM (in response to johnrellis)John,
What is the difference between saving in version sets and saving as a copy in PSE8 in a practical sense? Benefits and disadvantages of each/
Thank you, and I'll be following the topic originated by Deep Woods with interest.

Is this catalog converted from a previous version?
As a first step, download and run the free utility psedbtool:
http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/
Copy and paste the output here (come back to the Web to reply -- email will truncate the output).

5. Re: Version Sets not working
johnrellis Mar 22, 2010 8:22 PM (in response to johnrellis)By saving in a version set, by default the Organizer will only show you the most recent version, hiding the other versions. But if you save as a copy, you'll always see both copies in the Organizer.

johnrellis Mar 23, 2010 6:09 PM (in response to Deep Woods)Hmm, psedbtool shows that you're not tripping over the bug that's known to disable version sets. So the problem must be elsewhere.
Does this happen with files residing on both the C and D drives, or just one of the drives? Provide the full folder path of one of the files for which this happens.

Deep Woods Mar 23, 2010 6:32 PM (in response to johnrellis)I keep all my images in D Drive, but I put some in C just to see if the same would happen and it did. Nothing else resides in D drive other then folders with images.
Do you think reinstalling Elements would help?

I think it's pretty unlikely.
Try running PSE as administrator: Right-click the Photoshop Elements icon on your desktop or in the Windows Start Menu that you use to start PSE, and select Run As Administrator.

johnrellis Mar 23, 2010 6:45 PM (in response to johnrellis)Also try File > Catalog > Repair followed by Optimize (though I think that's unlikely to help, it's easy to do).

12. Re: Version Sets not working
Deep Woods Mar 23, 2010 7:03 PM (in response to johnrellis)I'm really stumped. Catalogue repair didn't do anything and running as administrator failed to change things as well. I even opened up version 7 and 6 and the same issue exists there as well. Up until last week I was able to create version sets so it did work at one time.

That strongly suggests there is some problem with Windows or the file system, not with PSE. The installations of the different versions of PSE don't share anything, so whatever is going wrong is something independent of any version of PSE, I think.
But if it were a file permissions problem, you'd think that running as administrator would work around that. If it were a failing disk drive, you'd expect that it would work on the other drive.
I'm out of hypotheses too...

Deep Woods Mar 26, 2010 10:40 AM (in response to johnrellis)Hello John,
In regards to the unresolved issue I have with inactive version sets I just discovered something that may indicate what's going on. At least it might indicate something to you. For me I'm still a bit lost.
When I edit an original and save it as a jpeg version sets is not active. But once I make a copy and save it again, version sets is active and it saves it to one.
Let me know if this makes any sense to you.
Thanks once again,
Deep Woods
