    InDesign Defaults

    on5lb Community Member

      Hello,

I'm afraid this is not the right forum, but ...?

I'm trying to manage Indesign CS4, using Classroom in a book InDesign CS4 (French version)

Anyway, i'm at leson N°7 so far (complicated), but when i start a new lesson, i'm supposed to "move" the file [ InDesign Defaults ]

No problems, except i don't find the file !

This is simply because i'm using Windows 7 pro, which has not the usual "Documents and Settings"

      And what about \AppData\ ?

Can anyone tell me how to porceed, please ?

      Thanks for comments,

      Jean

You'll find the path information you need in this thread: Replace Your Preferences

            Thanks Petre,

I checked the links, but your advice for Windows is correct, except for Windows 7

As i already said, there is no Documents and Settings for windows 7, and i wonder where to find App(lication) Data ?

I use [Ctrl+Alt+Maj] since i have Photoshop CS4 (With a perfect, clear, correct  Classroom in a book) !

Works fine with InDesign CS4. I restart each time with a CLEAR product.

I'm just currious where to find [Indesign Defaults] file ?

With Masintosh, the procedure is correct, but not for Win7.

By the way, some rumours are talking about Windows8 for next year ...!

            Have a nice day,

            Jean

Make sure to enable the visibility of hidden files.

I copied those Win7 paths from Bob's system after navigating to the files, so I have some confidence that they are indeed accurate.

                  Hello Bob and Peter,

You're right by following the advice from Bob, i really forgot to activate the visibility of hidden files (just for a while !).

But i'm still confused about the files and folders to delete !

Using Ctrl+Alt+Maj just after clicking InDesign, I said Yes to start with a clean product.

But after looking for th hidden files, there are still a lot.

In Classroom in a book, they only advice to delete the Default InDesign files, following the procdure for Windows until Vista !

They advice to follow the procedure:

                  [ Documents and Settings (don't exist anymore) \Username\Application Date\Adobe\InDesign\Version6.0/fr_FR ]

I used an other way until \Adobe\InDesign\Version6.0\fr_FR\Caches\ within 3 Folders with text and 6 files + 1 text file for a ttal of about 11MB (!)

                  Peanuts !

Sorry for your time Peter, and tanks to Bob,

                  regards,

                  Jean

Everything you deleted is rebuilt as soon as you start up ID again, so that's why it seems as if nothing has changed. The Defaults and SavedData files are actually rewritten again when ID closes. The reason they want you to reset preferences in the CIB for each lesson is that, at least in theory, the files were prepared using the program default prefs, and in order to be sure that you see exactly the same behavior and screens you need to use the same settings. In practice, I don't believe there is much in the lessons that would cause you any real difficulty if you were to leave the prefs intact from lesson to lesson -- the biggest issues are likely to be choice of workspace, display performance settings, ruler units, and increments, and as long as you remember that you've changed them you shouldn't be too confused. If necessary you can change them back to complete a lesson.

What I would recommend is making a set of customized preferences that suit your work style, then save them (the two files mentioned in the other thread) as copies somewhere convenient. When ready to tackle a lesson you cna then either delete those two files or use the kwyboard to reset during startup. When you are ready to go back to real work, copy the two backup files into the user profile and overwrite the default set and you'll be customized once again (this must be done with ID closed).

                      Hello Peter,

                      I'm starting lesson 8 so far !

It's not that difficult, compared to the latest Quark Express version we used.

I have to admid (so far...) InDesign seams to be more "user-friendly" !

We decided to start with InDesign, for the simple (logical) reason having the benefits of the real compatibility between other Adobe products.

We use (since decades) Adobe products: Illustrator & Photoshop mostly.

What i deplore by Adobe, is the lack of client concerning. BUSINESS is THE major aim they have in mind !

How many products Adobe decided to stop with...? While thousants of users insisted to keep it on the market ?

No way, they like to prove they have the power !

Adobe Dimensions : Adobe Streamline : Adobe LiveMotion : Adobe Type Manager...SVG : Remember ? How many others ?

We live in a technical evolution, correct, but not necessarely justified. Except for Financial Managers...!

And the human people is under influence of those manipulated situation, and is in a real trowback period !

Sorry for these comments (nothing to do with this forum) but i'm a perfectionist, responsable of a company devoted to Industrial Quality Control, and remember much better times. Respect, living in harmony with family, and much more SAVE periods !

                      Difficult times we live !

                      All the best,

                      Jean
