Is the Help from compiled merged projects slower to use (topics load slower)

I'm looking into splitting my project (RH8) and creating a merged project; however, I tested a few sample merged project (parent and two child projects) and the webhelp created when compiled operates very slowly--the topics load slowly and switching between topics is slow.

Is there an answer for this?

Something is wrong with your set up. We have merges with up to 12,000 topics and they work just fine. Indistinguishable from a standalone project.

Have you looked at the tutorials on my site?

I have set it up according to the "Merged Help \ Adobe RoboHelp 8" instructions.

My structure is this:    Desktop \ RH8_merge \ source (and a generate folder to which I generate the Primary Layout)

In the source folder, I have two folders:

  • P21ProjMerge
  • P21ParentMerge

(P21 is the application for which we are providing an online Help)

Residing in the ParentMerge folder is the project P21merge with all its respective files.  Residing in the P21ProjMerge folder are nine (9) subfolders that each contain a child project with its respective files.

I generate each of the projects, the Parent and the Child projects.  Then I double-click the P21merge.htm.  It takes awhile to load, but more problematic is when I click between topics each topic loads very slowly.

I know my way works.

I don't think the difference is the problem though and I am not sure what it is. I have seen a situation where the help was slow and it was because not all the child projects known to the parent had been generated. Once they had all been generated, it was fine.

Do things improve if you experiment with removing different child projects from the output? Can you pin it down to specific projects?

Okay, I ran a test and this turns out to be a non-issue.  Apparently, any project I compile on my desktop runs slow. I have been publishing to a server for so long that I didn't consider that as a variable.

Peter, thanks for your response.

It's still not normal. My projects all run OK on the local drive as well as they do on the network, probably faster.
