Launch, shipping date and immediate impressions

    Opus 111 Community Member

Why do they launch the product a month before it will actually ship? Why not launch it and ship it straight away? There is probably a very good reason, but I don't know what it is, perhaps someone could entlighten me.

So now PS CS5 is revealed will people be leaping to upgrade? Must say I do like the look of the puppet warp and the context aware fill (which is going to make my work a lot quicker, if it really does what it appears to do in the promo stuff), but I guess 64 bit is going to make me upgrade, so I can use more than 3 of the 16gig on my mac pro.

Couldn't agree more about the release date being a month away.  I've already sent customer service a complaint.  At the very least they should have allowed current owners to buy a downloadable Upgrade today.  The box sets can ship in a week.  We're fine with a download.

Really not happy about this.  Why would they make their customers angry?

I imagined I would skip CS4 and get CS5 on relase. But Adobe's scandelous pricing for europe makes it a bitter pill to swallow.

It's only a matter of time until Adobe realizes the change in market. Hopefully is will not be too late because they are going to really screw themselves soon if they dont change.

Perhaps like it was "only a natter of time" for the Colorado river to form the Grand Canyon?

Eventually a product reaches a plateau and people get burnt out on buying the latest greatest gizmo. With the ever increasing price and turn over of software/hardware, consumers will be satisfied with what they have or limit their upgrades to follow suit in pairs by skipping 2 or 3 releases. Your assumption that it will take decades for cause and affect is a bit sarcastic, but taken in joust just the same.

It's simple math to me.  Price goes up, but current features are enough to make money with. The economy sucks for now, cracks and knock offs are rampant. It's a simple case of change or die.  Evolve or pass. For the most part people are more frustrated with the way things work rather then needing to own more features that create a relative same end product. In plain English, if the software can't assist users in making and sharing a higher level of quality in art, then there is no point in owning the next toy to make the same crap.

Call me crazy or just well salted.  Either way, I have still stood the test of time in this forum. That in itself speaks volumes to what I know, but it's the usual with human nature to write off eccentric or radical thinking spoken from years of abuse.

The price shall drop and Adobe will survive if they are smart.

They will make smarter software or become a smaller former of itself.

Oh, I agree with you fully.  I am one of those who will be skipping CS5 for reasons of cost (requires a hardware upgrade as well).

What I was alluding to was the glacial pace at which the Adobe elephant seems to move.  See the customer and tech support issues, for example.

Tech support is a completely different animal all together that is driven by the bottom line. Development is another said topic which is being pulled in many directions based upon ones opinion or a group of market researchers. Good or bad, if you don't change with your market change the inequalities shall bite you in the butt in profit or loss statements. I actually hate corporate politics, but I always find myself in a constant battle with said subject. Ironic as it may seem, but when I see things break, I voice my opinion. You make your own mind up if I'm full of myself or not.

I have never personally purchase any version of Adobe products and never plan to do so. The problem with tech support is clearly the disconnect between bean counters and customer product awareness. Adobe has never been a big supporter in tech support nor in giving information in the form of manuals. They have heavily relied upon their Alpha and Beta testers to join with them to gather information and have input into creating the application as well as Adobe literally using software testers and developers as a crutch to distribute functional features of said software developments.

It's an ultimate user experience for Adobe and they have cashed in very well in the past, but they are running out of quality guinea pigs to suck from in my opinion. Compiled with the India tech support factor, Adobe has pretty much sucked the life out of their client base and will need to fish new ponds for support. I just hope someone in a position ( if there is such a person ) actually understands WTF they are doing, but so far, I see blinders on and phasers on full...

How are producers of other items handling the matter? Don’t camera- or car-companies also announce their products way before shipping them to the public?

The big difference is that you can't download a car or the latest camera to your computer.

They are trying to keep sales up due to the soft market.

And that’s pretty much the same reason why so many people seem unwilling to pay for software, isn’t it?

Would you complain about having to wait a week for another installment of your favorite TV-series if you knew it was actually edited and ready the week before?

Adobe may have good or bad or even stupid reasons for their release procedures, but it hardly seems worth getting all worked up about.

I look forward to CS5 as much or more as the next person, I would guess, but my productivity for the coming weeks does not hinge on the Puppet Warp or Content Aware Fill …

I think its bad timing to release now, though I do also believe this is there last consumer bloatware need to have version.
