    Mouse Button Shortcuts possible?

    bsnyder175 Community Member

I just purchased a Logitech M500 Corded Mouse (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice_pointers/mice/devices/5743).  When I tried creating shortcuts for the Back and Forward Buttons in Photoshop, the forward button gave me a "The key press cannot be used as a shortcut."  The back button didn't do anything - no warning nor did it input the shortcut.

This kinda stinks...I was really hoping I'd be able to bind some of the more frequent tools/options to my different mouse buttons.  Is it not possible?  I've also attached a screenshot of my mouse preferences.  I thought maybe it has to be using one of those certain options to be useable by Photoshop?  I tried several different ones including Keystroke and Modifiers, but nothing has worked.  Any thoughts?

I've got a Logitech Laser 5300 wireless mouse (9 buttons) and I've never been able to configure anything it does to PS.

Do it the other way. First install the OS X driver for the mouse. Then you can assign any keystroke or keystroke combination to any mouse button from the Logitech control panel.

I'm on Vista, but I don't see why it should behave any differently on Mac.

              A caviat:

The above suggestion may or may not work, but setting your mouse up for one application and one application only, can have unintended consequences in other software or your Operating System.

Double check for keystroke conflicts BEFORE you program a mouse for a single application only.

My Logitech mouse can be programmed per-application, but I haven't tried that.

What I have done is to configure a few of the most-used Photoshop shortcuts to mouse buttons as global assignments. That works very well, even if that particular shortcut has no function (or a different function) in the OS or other applications.

Thanks.  I did try that out and was able to keybind things in PS and then assign that keybind to my mouse clicks.  But also, like Me said, it had some unintended effects on my desktop.  The first one I tried made new folders on my desktop, lol.  I added every possible modifier to it to make it as complex as possible, hoping that my other software wouldn't recognize it as a shortcut for another action.  But my fear is that some pieces of software still may see one part of my shortcut and still perform anoter action.  For example, if I did cmnd+shft+ctrl+opt+N for something in PS.  Would it be possible that another application would only read the cmnd+N within that larger combination and still perform its shortcut?  Does that make sense?

I had to point mine to certain applications, but there aren't any conflicts once I got it all set up. I have a Logitech MX1100 (BTW, I love this mouse and I totally recommend it).

Here's a screenshot of the preferences. There is a menu at the top where you add/remove applications.

Aha, that's what Fosse and Me were talking about.  I didn't see that option at the top to program for specific applications.  That should do it, thanks everyone!
