We have a new project for a system that we are rolling out in the next couple of months. We want our users to know the full name of the system, "Single Solution," but know that over time that will get shortened to just SS.

I thought that I could just use a snippet for all references to "Single Solution" so I could edit the snippet and save hours of work when it comes time to shorten the name. But adding the snippet to a topic adds a break (similar to using the <br> HTML command) after the snippet that I am unable to remove. I tried editing the HTML of the snippet, removing the <p> after the text, but that didn't seem to help at all.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Here is the full HTML of the snippet after I removed the paragraph tag:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<meta name="topic-comment" content="" />
<meta name="generator" content="Adobe RoboHelp 8" />
<title>Single Solution</title>
</head>

<body>
<li style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold;">Single Solution
</body>
</html>

Hi there

Assuming you are using RoboHelp 6, 7 or 8, you could use a variable. If you are using version 8, you may even format the variable. Then when it changes, you just change the variable.

When I do that, I get no options for actual formatting. I just want to make the text bold.

In the area on the right, where you type the value, you should be able to select the text and apply any formatting you desire. You may use either the formatting toolbar or the keyboard commands. For example, Alt+B should apply Bold.

Rick,

That doesn't work for me, unfortunately. I don't ever get to edit it at all, it only brings up a Properties box for me to place text in.

Hi there

Can you please insert a screen capture of what you see in the editor? Maybe that will help.

If you choose to do this, please don't use the attach function below where you type your reply. Instead, use the Camera icon above where you type your reply so we see the image immediately.

Hi there

Nope, sorry. Nothing there. I've seen sporadic reports from others saying that the camera icon functionality was broken for them since the forums software was upgraded a week or so ago. Fortunately, things work fine for me.

I guess perhaps I might just ask. Are you using RoboHelp for Word or RoboHelp HTML here? Do you see the dialog I displayed earlier?

Cheers... Rick

It's RoboHelp for HTML, but I don't see any way to edit the text as you show. I can do that for Snippets, but not for Variables.

Hi again

Earlier in the thread you implied you saw the pod. Is it perhaps that you see the pod but not the split? So all you are seeing is the list of variable names and not the actual values on the right? Perhaps all you need to do is drag the splitter to the left in order to view the other side of the pod.

Cheers... Rick

There was a lot of discussion about user variables and how to modify them in this thread. However, the original question was never answered.

Is is possible to have snippets run inline with body text?

My specific question is how to include multiple user variables together in a single single-source item. User variables can, of course, be included in snippets. However, like the OP, I cannot get a snippet to exist inline with text in a topic. Insertion in to any body text breaks the text into html paragraphs or other <div> type elements (I believe the html terminology is a "block" element). I would like snippets to be able to act like <span> inline elements.

Nesting user variables in one another would seem to be the answer. However, though nested user variables can be created and edited, using them causes RoboHelp 8 to crash completely.

Given this, my conclusion is that user variables are inline elements with some formatting possibilities but cannot be nested and snippets are block elements that can contain user variables and other formatting. Completely missing is what I, and the OP, are really looking for.

The example I would give is for application major, minor, build, and revision version numbers. I would like to have each version number component as a simple user variable. Then using either nested user variables or user variables in snippets I would create full (maj.min.build.rev), short (maj.min.build), and very short version (maj.min) numbers that can be formatted as desired AND included inline. Changes then can truely be single source.

EDIT: Reading further in the forum, this seems to be a common issue and, in my mind, major missing functionality. I am a software developer and can say that given all of the auto- updating, formatting, and html rewriting that occurs "behind the scenes" that this should not be all that difficult to implement. I have recently tested other less sophisticated HATs that can do this with no problem.

Hi,

Perhaps Conditional build tags can be of help. Set a conditional build tag to .rev. and one .build. Then define three different layouts, each excludes different tags. You can then have one build with the full version numbering, one short and one very short.

Willam

The idea is to be able to different length version numbers within the same build. For instance, the title page would reference the complete version number (maj.min.build.rev) while the topic describing Windows registry entries would use a shorter version number (maj.min). The registry entries change only at the minor version level.

Hi there

So color me totally confused. Why is this not a simple matter of just using four variables? ( maj min build rev )

Where you want only a pair, just use two of them. ( maj min )

I must be missing something quite obvious here... Rick
