1. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Harm Millaard May 5, 2010 11:36 AM (in response to Mark Morreau)Did you open the existing project from CS4 in CS5 and save it?
Then you have to try with an auto-saved version, because there is no backward compatibilitty. If you did not follow that route but saved under a different name, you can still use the old project in CS4 without problems, unless you use externals and the drive letter changed.

2. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Mark Morreau May 5, 2010 11:38 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Hi Harm,
No, this project never saw sight of CS5.
It was working fine in CS4.
I installed CS5.
I ran CS4 and opened this project in it. Result: all assets marked offline and not re-linkable or re-import-able.
Same if I create a new CS4 project and try and bring in previously used or fresh assets.
As you say, CS4 and CS5 should co-exist.
But they're not!
Cheers

3. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Bill Hunt May 5, 2010 12:16 PM (in response to Mark Morreau)Just a guess, but it sounds like your CS4 has reverted to the trial version. This has happened to several users. Test with any other MPEG Assets, and you should get the same error about MPEG being unsupported.
The cure is to Deactivate (probably will not be available)
Uninstall
Run Adobe Clean Script CS4 several times, rebooting between each
Reinstall
Activate
Update to CS4.2.1
Then, things should work as before.
Good luck,
Hunt

Bill Hunt May 5, 2010 12:21 PM (in response to Mark Morreau)As you say, CS4 and CS5 should co-exist. But they're not!
While I could be very wrong here, I do not think that it is an issue with co-existence, but one of the full-paid version of CS4 reverting to the trial, with zero MPEG support. This has happened to too many, and well before CS5 was even previewed. Not sure why this happens, but I'd guess that there is a situation in the updater, that triggers this behavior. For most users, it never surfaces, but for many, it has happened and shut them down, until the perform the steps above.
Good luck,
Hunt

5. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Mark Morreau May 5, 2010 12:28 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thanks for your replies, Bill.
I thought that it might be the case that it had reverted to trial version, but in fact it's stranger even than that.
Now I find that Premiere Pro CS4 won't import any assets at all!
Using the Media Browser no files show up at all when I choose the "all supported files" option. Even when I choose the "all files" option and try to import a DV AVI or even a JPEG I get the same "file format not supported" error message.
After Effects CS4 is working just fine with the same assets.
.... stranger and stranger.
Cheers

6. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Bill Hunt May 5, 2010 12:41 PM (in response to Mark Morreau)Well Mark, that might blow my theory out of the water.
Wish that I had something else to offer. Maybe one of our tireless beta-testers, who had CS4 and CS5 on the same machine, can comment on anything that they observed.
It will be interested to see how things sort out here.
Good luck,
Hunt

7. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Harm Millaard May 5, 2010 12:51 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)I was working on a CS5 project when I read your post, so I decided to open CS4 with the previous version of this same project while continuing on the CS5 project. No problem whatsoever. Switching between CS4 and CS5, editing, all worked without a hiccup. Something else must be going on here, hence my remark about external disks. Restart your system and see if that helps.

8. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Mark Morreau May 5, 2010 4:04 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Thanks for your help guys, but no success.
I've rolled back to where I was before installing CS5 so I can finish off my current projects and will try this again when I'm done. Don't have the time to troubleshoot right now! Frustrating!
Cheers

9. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Bill Hunt May 5, 2010 4:15 PM (in response to Mark Morreau)Mark,
Sorry that we did not have a quick and easy answer for you.
At least with Harm's reporting, it confirms my thoughts that the co-existence of the two versions should not be an issue.
Over the decades, Adobe has been great about this. The only two instances of problems, that I can recall was with the CS2 Production Studio programs (all of them), if one later installed PrElements 4 - CS2 Production Studio got hosed, but was easily handled with a quick Repair Install of each program in the suite - took me about 45 mins. total. Obviously, Adobe had not anticipated a user with CS2 installing PrE 4, but by the time that I did, they had a KB Article on the issue. The other was if a use had PrPro CS3 installed, then installed CS4, and later uninstalled CS3 - it took some necessary elements form CS4, so again the Repair Install was the easy trick. Otherwise, no one issue that I know of. On one machine, I had PS 4, 5, 7 and CS for various reasons. No issue. Same for several versions of AI, both PageMaker and InDesign, and on the list goes. No issues.
Good luck, and hope the Project goes well, and that you'll get CS5 running smoothly,
Hunt

10. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Phil Griffith May 5, 2010 4:44 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)I downloaded and installed trial version of production premium suite (I'm waiting for my purchased disk to come in).
CS4 and CS5 coexist peacefullly. I have been working on cs4 project this past week and no issues. Also, I brought my cs4 project into cs5 and it said it had to convert to cs5. I made backup copy of my cs4 project before all this just in case. To my surprise, cs5 created a new project and did not alter my original cs4 project file. Has anyone else noticed this?

11. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Bill Hunt May 5, 2010 4:56 PM (in response to Phil Griffith)Phil,
Usually, Premiere will ask one to name converted Project, or locate it elsewhere, to keep one from overwriting the previous version's Project, 'cause you can never go back. Did you not receive such a dialog? Did CS5 just assign a new name? If so, was it just an incremented name, or did it perhaps add CS5 to the name?
Thanks for reporting,
Hunt

12. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Harm Millaard May 5, 2010 5:01 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)If so, was it just an incremented name
This is the case.
-
13. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Phil Griffith May 5, 2010 5:09 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)that is correct. It was the original project name incremented.
Still I was afraid it would ovewrite my original file
and it didn't. iirc, it did ask me for new name. but I'm not sure of that.

14. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Bill Hunt May 5, 2010 7:41 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Thank you for the info. That makes sense, though I would have been worried, that I did not get the dialog screen to rename, or relocate. Now, I have been warned - no worries.
Appreciated,
Hunt

Bill Hunt May 5, 2010 7:42 PM (in response to Phil Griffith)Phil,
I feel your fear. Until this thread, I would have assumed that I had committed OE, and would probably not have pressed the OK button.
Thanks,

16. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Alaskalonewolf May 6, 2010 10:04 AM (in response to Mark Morreau)Got the same problem...Premiere CS4 will not load any media after CS5 install.....
I did open a AE CS4 project and all the media appeared fine...

17. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
tgrider May 17, 2010 8:52 PM (in response to Alaskalonewolf)Add another user to the count for this problem. I need to keep CS5, but some of my third party effects packages don't work with it yet, so not only are my CS4 projects dead, but all my effects too!

18. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
rejdmast1 May 22, 2010 1:34 PM (in response to tgrider)I have the exact same problem. Win7 64bit. CS4 is very stable and very few problems (it was never a trial version) before upgrade to CS5. Installed paid CS5 Production Premium. Installed flawlessly.
PP CS5 works fine and imports CS4 projects with no problems.
PP CS4 now does not see ANY media (.wav, .jpg, mov, .tga, etc). AE CS4 works fine and can imports various files.
It appears something got overwritten or PP CS4 is looking in the wrong area when it has to verify files.
I am going to try installing CS5 one component at at time to try and narrow down the problem.

Mark Morreau May 22, 2010 3:34 PM (in response to rejdmast1)Yes, please let all of us know if you find the solution! You'd be doing the community a huge favour if you find why this has been happening.
I'm stuck on CS4 until I've finished my current projects. Very frustrating having CS5 in the box and not being able to install it!
Cheers

21. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
rejdmast1 May 22, 2010 3:55 PM (in response to Mark Morreau)Well, it looks like the problem is being caused by the core CS5 PP. I deleted CS5 PP and CS4 PP worked. I installed the core CS5 PP and got the problem again. So I deleted CS4 PP and re-installed it and now they both work.
Currently, I am at CS4 PP 4.0 and I was able to make a new project and open various files. CS5 PP also works.
I tried opening a 4.1 project and it crashed. I have to update CS4PP but updates don't show up when I hit help.
After I get CS4 PP up to date I'll have to test everything else out.
Let me know how you guys make out.

23. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
rejdmast1 May 22, 2010 4:02 PM (in response to Glergen)We're you then able to apply the CS4 updates?

24. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
Glergen May 22, 2010 4:06 PM (in response to rejdmast1)Yes, I applied all CS4 updates along with the Matrox RT x2 updates.

25. Re: Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work
rejdmast1 May 23, 2010 3:13 PM (in response to Glergen)Did a little more testing. After re-installing CS4 PP I download the latest upgrade and installed it.
Everything appears to be working fine. I have to do further tests tomorrow but so far I haven't run into any
problems.
I also have AXIO HD installed. I didn't have to re-install anything.
So far, the easiet way to fix the problem is:
1. Deinstall CS4 PP.
2. Re-install CS4 PP.
3. Download and apply the latest CS4 PP upgrades.
If a couple of people can verify that this works I will send a bug report to Adobe, otherwise I will
just mark it up as an anomaly of my system.
Now back to trying to hack my Quadro FX4600.
