Well, after eight hours the install failed.  It only installed On

Location and SoundBooth.  I'll look at the log tomorrow.

I'm about ready to demand my money back.  This is looking to be a massively defective product.

          Here are some general suggestions:

First, most of these MSI related errors are going to happen even if you try to install just one product from your CS5 suite. So, while troubleshooting, just choose one application to install. If that fails, it will fail much more quickly than if you choose to try to install all of the applications. If you started with a failure, then make some changes and can get one app to install, you've probably found the right solution, and can then go back and install the remaining applications.

Second, make use of the following KB docs:

Troubleshooting installation - Adobe Creative Suite 5 products

          http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_cpsid_82827_en-us

This is a high level document, but contains links to two very useful documents:

General installation troubleshooting — Adobe Creative Suite 5  products

          http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_cpsid_82942_en-us

This contains some best practices like how to startup Vista/7 in a "clean boot" mode (MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135), check for admin priviledges, test the installation media, etc.

Troubleshoot install errors using Creative Suite install logs

          http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_kb400593_en-us

This contains information that helps to identify errors related to MSI components, which seem to be the root of all the failures reported on this thread.

If your log isn't helping you to identify a specific error which is documented in the Adobe support site, http://www.adobe.com/support , try searching the Microsoft support site for related issues, http://support.microsoft.com/

Many of the errors that are being reported, 1402, 1935, etc, are issues that affect installations from other software vendors, even Microsoft, so if you find a documented solution used for another software application, it may be valid for Adobe CS5 applications as well.

            @amitzi,

The CS5 clean script is indeed available. Here's a link to the KB doc on it's usage, which includes a link to the page for downloading it:

Run — Adobe CS5 Cleaner Tool

            http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_cpsid_82947_en-us

Caveat, this tool is really designed to remove data and files from prelease versions of CS5 applications, or failed installations of CS5 applications. I don't expect it will be commonly relevant in the cases where the installations are failing due to MSI errors as most of the users here are experiencing.

For those finding Error 1935, or "An error occurred during the installation of assembly  component" in your log files, see my response to the log posted by saratogacoach here:

                Hi,

Thanks to all for their kind help. Having found some other OS errors on my computer, and inability to repair (long story related to replacing a hard drive that failed, difficulty with re-installing a "clean" Win 7 upgrade, instead having to upgrade in place from recovery disk restored Vista 64 first), I decided to buy a new Win 7 x 64 computer today. I'm in the process of setting it up and plan to try installing CS5 as one of the first software's I put on the machine to avoid any conflicts or problems. I think this should work. Will update.

                Kind Regards,

Seems weird but only After Effects from the CS5 master collection would not install on my machine.

                  Any reason for this?

                    Hi,

While I had some difficulties with installation, I finally figured out that for me it was a corrupt OS. Once I used a different computer with a good OS, it installed OK. I hope that other forum users can offer some solutions.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

From the error, the installer could not extract the contens of the Assets1_1.zip file.

                      Go to C:\Users\Public\Downloads\Adobe CS5 Master Collection\Adobe CS5\payloads\AdobeAfterEffects10AllTrial\

Then open open up that ZIP file. I'm guessing you'll get an error, which would indicate that the file is corrupted.

If you do get an error, then do this:

                      1. Find the .7Z file (one of the two you downloaded for the trial).
                      2. Open it in 7-Zip, WinRAR, or another archive utility that support the 7-zip format.
                      3. Look in /Adobe After Effects CS5/payloads/AdobeAfterEffects10AllTrial/ for the same file.
                      4. Extract this one file (Assets1_1.zip) to C:\Users\Public\Downloads\Adobe CS5 Master Collection\Adobe CS5\payloads\AdobeAfterEffects10AllTrial\, overwriting the corrupted one.(If for some reason you get an error when you try to extract this file  from the .7Z file, then that would mean that your download did not  complete correctly, and you'd need to re-download it.)
                      5. Install After Effects again.

                      Hope this helps!

I wiped my workstation and reinstalled Win7 Pro x64, then just ran Windows Update until it was done, then ran the CS5 setup.exe as Administrator.  After the Installer Intializing screen goes away - NOTHING.  A clean install doesn't fix the problem.  The problem is on Adobe's end, not the user end.

I did finally a notice something.  The DVDs are DUAL LAYER.  That was a massively stupid idea on Adobe's part.  In my day job doing IT, we've found we can't trust drives to read or write dual-layer reliably.  No wonder the only install I got to run ran eight hours before it failed.

I'm going to try and copy the disks to my D: and try to run them from there.  We'll see what happens.

Joy!  I got my CS5 Master Collection installed!!!!!

This is what worked for my setup.

It looks to be a combination of bad ideas from Adobe.  They wrote a very sloppy installer.  They may have used a version of Visual C++ that has issues with any older installed versions and didn't write a proper routine to upgrade any previously installed versions.  They also used double-layered DVD disks, and either the disks are of marginal quality and/or they didn't test them on enough drives.

I reasoned that maybe if I copied the files to a hard drive and ran the install from there, it might work.    I had to try three systems before I found one that had a DVD drive that could read the disks without having read errors.  I then copied off the two disks to individual folders on a portable drive.  I then connected the portable drive to my workstation and copied the folders to the D: drive on that PC.  After a few false starts, I found that I had to copy the files from the Disk 2 Payload folder and paste them into the Disk 1 Payload folder since their installer doesn't let you browse for the disk when it asks for Disk 2 (Another dumb idea, people.).  There were about 129 files it said were duplicates, so I told Win7 copy to skip them.  They were mostly .xml files and it turns out they didn't matter.   I then ran setup.exe as Administrator and it installed in less than an hour!  Mind, you this was on a new, clean install on Win7 Pro x64.

Now I have to reinstall all my other apps.  @#$%^&*!!!!!!  At least the frustration is over for me......

Just know for next time that Macs usually read DVDs where PCs fail due to

                            their superior engineering.

Sorry, but that is a load of total BS!

Apple sources their DVD drives from the same places that PC manufacturers source theirs. There is absolutely no difference in the drives and no so-called "superior engineering" involved. The last I checked, Apple uses the same off-the-shelf Matsushita (Panasonic) drives as are used by PC manufacturers. If you like you Mac, fine. But please don't troll with "fan boy" tactics.

LOL!  It was my MacBook Pro that I read the disks on!

I have ProductionStudio CS4 on my Mac, but I could only afford to buy one upgrade right now, and I needed CS5 for work I'm doing on my Dual-Xeon, 8GB workstation.

The alternative is to paste into the post here the summary from the end. Also, search the log for "return value 3" and if you find any instances, copy it and the 4 or 5 lines of text above it, and include those also.

It looks like I do not have the ability to access the registry key, but I have Full Control as an Administrator and I ran the install as an Administrator.  I knew there was a problem with the Microsoft_VC80_ATL_x86 since in the many times I've tried the install, it always gets stuck there.  I've tried the install so many times, I can almost input the serial number from memory.

                                                Films4U,

Just because you are an administrator on the machine, don't assume the permissions are set correctly to allow the installer to modify the registry keys in question. If assumptions like that were reliable, there wouldn't be much need for technical support ;-)

You can solve this using the method outlined in this document:

                                                http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_kb404622_en-us

Search your registry for "1FA18F7974E099CD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8", and then perform the steps on it's parent "Components". Note the little warnings about sometimes having to do the steps twice if you get an error the first time.

                                                Good luck!

                                                  Hi,

Having spent a lot of time trying to install and encountering similar error logs, as mentioned above, I finally used a new computer with Win 7 x 64 factory installed. The install of CS5 Design Premium upgrade went quickly and smoothly.

The numerous previous failed installs were on a computer running Win 7 x 64 that had been "upgraded in place" from Vista x 64. Eventually, in analyzing the install difficulties I came to the conclusion that this computer's OS was probably corrupted, though unsure what caused the corruption.

I wonder if the install problem is common to computers that used an upgrade in place, on top of their previous Vista system, instead of a "clean" (custom) upgrade. However, this hypothesis will not work if these install difficulties are occuring on computers with factory installed (OEM) Win 7 x 64 or have been upgraded using a clean (custom) route.

Just a thought about what could be contributing to the install difficulty...

                                                  Kind Regards,

Matthew:  Did I mention that I went through every suggestion in the thread?  Also, I've already used the link you provided in a previous reply, but I did it all over again and checked all permissions all the way up the registry tree.  I tried the reinstall but alas, no successful install.

Saratogacoach: When I installed Win 7, it was on a newly formatted partition, not a Win XP or Vista upgrade.

The only thing left to do is to re-format my partition and re-install Win 7.  Others in the thread have tried this before an install without success, although it worked for at least one person.

I know that Win 7 64 bit is a new OS for Adobe, but I still say that more testing should have been done so that we would have a robust install package.  Out of the 4 Adobe editing software packages I've used, the ball was dropped this time.  I just hope that once I get it installed, the software works bug free.

                                                    Thanks for the suggestions,

                                                    Films4U (once the software installs)

                                                      A couple questions/suggestions:

                                                      - When you corrected permissions in the registry (for both Administrators group and SYSTEM), which is what the fix is for the 1402 error that you received, did you do so for the following key (and propagate to all sub-keys)?:

                                                      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\C omponents

If not, that's the one you should be looking at.

Also, after doing so, did you try renaming the 1FA18F7974E099CD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8 key before re-installing? (You might add a dash to the beginning of the name, for example.)

                                                      - Are you logged into your computer with a user that is part of a domain? If so, then it is possible that some restriction put in place by your network administrator (e.g. a group policy).

Verify that you are logging into a local administrator account. Create one if necessary.

I did use the registry tree you suggested and have Full Control.  However, I could not rename the offending key.  I could rename the key item that was causing the problem but that did not allow the install.

Here's how I got it working:

                                                            1) Via Control Panel, turned User Account Control (UAC) down to Never notify (temporarily)

                                                            2) Opened up the Registry Editor and located the key DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8

Note: I had three of these keys and I amended all of them, but one in particular contained about 20 other keys (including 8AB67CA7DA73301B7449A0200000010) so this is the one I focused on.

                                                            3) Changed the permissions as in nightmarebr's post (so that Administrator has Full Control), but also ticked Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object

                                                            4) This led to an error message, saying that not all the child keys could be updated.

                                                            5) Checking through these child keys I found that I did not have permission to change the permissions, as the Administrator was not the owner. So I changed the owner of the keys to Administrator (by editing permissions, clicking on Owner tab, and adding the Administrator as the owner). There is a good guide to this process here:

                                                            6) I did this for all the child keys and then was able to change permissions for all of them so that Administrator had Full Control.

                                                            7) I ran the installer (as Administrator) and installed into the Program Files (x86) folder (the Program Files folder did not work).

                                                            8) After installation was successful (FINALLY!) I changed my settings on the UAC back to normal.

                                                            Hope that helps someone!

So this and reinstalling the O/S is what customers have to look forward to? There are 6 Windows 7 64 machines in our studio and it took almost 7 hours to get this crap (CS5 MS) installed on just 2! And as system admin I am NOT reinstalling any O/S only to realize like Films4U it solved absolutely nothing.

In fact I did install this on a brand new Win 7 64 machine and guess what?

1st issue right out of the gate:  "Installer has detected that a machine restart may be pending." ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Skipped right by that stupidity.

2nd issue: Got a Kboelsen type error and thought, "Okay I'll play the reboot game this one time because it just might work." Restarted the machine, which really did not need a reboot. Reboot solved nothing, of course.

3rd issue: Seconds later the same stupid ""Installer has detected that a machine restart may be pending." Skipped that and continued with the installation. Installed DW and FW before taking a dump. Immediately restarted the installation, same routine, and 45 minutes later it finally installed the rest. A 3 hour joke.

Second machine was a lot more frustrating and more time consuming but similar issues. Needless to say these two installs consumed almost an entire working day.

Can't believe you folks did not even test your installer on the most up and coming O/S, especially when many of the articles I've been reading since last year were all about CS5 and it's native 64bit support. This was on Windows XP 64 right, not Windows 7? Maybe a typo on Adobe's part or I read through the articles too fast.

Fix these issues fast or I guarantee we will gladly save ourselves a couple thousand in upgrade cost by staying with a much more reliable CS4 for the long term.

Oh yeah, what the heck is this statement supposed to do for us? "Good luck all, and thanks for your understanding for the complexity of what's involved here, and the aspects of the OS that we don't have control over." Many of us have problems with fresh installs of Win 7 64 bit - did no one at Adobe think to go out and buy a copy to test CS5 on? So the customer has to be your guinea pig?

Soooooo, out came the install disks again. Unfortunately, Encore CS5 now refuses to install any of the library components.

I originally installed from the download tryout since my DVDs had not yet arrived. I had to jump through all sorts of hoops to get it installed originally, but finally had success (so I thought). This was using the downloaded tryout. So it seems that the tryout does not install the Encore library? And from what I understand some of the Premeire and After Effects stuff does not get installed either. So, when the disks arrived, I popped them in, input my serial number and ran the install again. After a few failed attempts, and logging in as Administrator, truning off virus and firewall, going to limited startup in MSConfig, etc, I got everything to install EXCEPT Encore now. For some reason, it continues to say:

I don't recall ever owning anything like that. Oh well, I ran this thing and I am about to reboot and try again, but I thought I woudl post all of this first.

Having similar problems to the one above, trying to install CS5 Master trial version W7 x64 log error 1402, system error 5 etc. etc.   Have been through nightmarebr's fixes for registry permissions etc. and have checked permissions for the MSI files but think I've found something that I've not seen anyone else mention yet.

In regards to the VC90_CRT_x86_x64.msi file in install folder\payloads - if I double click the file I get "The installation source for this product is not available.  Verify that the source exists and that you can access it."

So it appears (using my very limited knowledge) that the msi file included in the download  is incomplete.  I can't seem to find an alternative source for this file - I've tried Microsoft.com but don't know or understand enough about the visual C++ deployment and set up that MS refers to when I search for this file.

Is this specific to the adobe setup? Has anyone else had this problem? Would anyone know where I could download this file?

I tried repair and it installed fine with no errors. Maybe yours downloaded badly. I posted my version of that file here. Ofcourse, I have VERY limited knowledge of MSI files, so please use at your own risk. I am not sure if there is any bad side effects to using the one I posted.

If I search the long GUID in my error message from the installer, RegEdit finds nothing.

I would try and repair the installation and would get the 1402 error code.

But, it's now not recognising that my OS is 64bit so I only have x86 Photoshop - no After-effects, Encore or Premiere and lots and lots of different errors that vary each time.

Its not that your are incapable of installing program , its just that i am as concerned as you are on this issue. I am curious to find out the reason of this failure.Chances are i may also be not able to resolve but we can definitely try once. Please mail at anshum@adobe.com so that i can send you further details.

My point of telling that it runs successfully for some other users meant that , its not only the installer which is failing but a combination of "Installer + machine + Permission" configuration combined which makes the installer fails on certain systems. So its worth giving a try again. It will also give me immense happiness if the issue is resolved for you.
