1. Re: 480GTX or FX5800? Help decide.
Harm Millaard May 19, 2010 6:10 AM (in response to Tayedrummer)There are no benchmarks to compare the GTX-480 and the FX5800 yet. Support for the 480 is intended in Q3.
The FX5800 is around six times as expensive as the 480, but has only triple the memory, all the other specs are much lower than the 480 and in june the new Fermi based line of Quadros are rumored to be announced.
I got the 480, because it is way more economical and much more advanced than the 5800, counting on nVidia and Adobe to increase the limit of 3 tracks to a higher number, but at least to give better performance with double the number of CUDA cores over the 5800.

moroccodriver May 19, 2010 10:48 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Harm, could you please elaborate on the errors/problems you've encountered with the 480 using the "MPE/CUDA hack"? I know I've read in a few forums about rendering errors, but didn't know what it meant. Is playback always perfect?

Harm Millaard May 19, 2010 11:33 AM (in response to moroccodriver)I haven't encountered them yet, but then I only have had the card for less than a week. No time yet to test extensively, but the first impressions are very good in comparison to my previous HD4870. As I progress I will post my experiences.

timodano May 19, 2010 9:56 PM (in response to Studio North Films)Anyone else notice that they took the gtx 285 off the adobe offical list of Cuda supported MPE CS5 video cards?
http://www.adobe.com/africa/products/premiere/performance/
I've been checking the website regularly in case they add new cards. Now they are taking them off. Thank goodness we have the hacks.

moroccodriver May 19, 2010 11:12 PM (in response to timodano)Did you notice that link was for Africa? Not that the laws of computer science are different in Africa, but that website might not be as up to date as others. There are still other sites that show the 285 as fully GPU supported:

11. Re: 480GTX or FX5800? Help decide.
FelixUnderwood May 20, 2010 10:11 AM (in response to Studio North Films)I have the exact same question and feel, for me anyway, Harm's advice is the best: wait till June to see what NVidia announces. Oh, and just because NVidia may announce their new lineup of Fermi Quadro cards doesn't mean they won't be ready for sale much later this year. Add to that the lag time necessary for MPE validation and we may be waiting awhile. So I recommend either waiting until next month to see what NVidia has to say or perhaps getting a card on ebay for the interim and then selling it there when you settle on a new card.

12. Re: 480GTX or FX5800? Help decide.
Tayedrummer May 20, 2010 2:17 PM (in response to Tayedrummer)Is there any benefit to running 2x 480GTX's in SLI? Double the RAM, Double the CUDA cores=double the layers, double the FX?

13. Re: 480GTX or FX5800? Help decide.
Harm Millaard May 20, 2010 2:23 PM (in response to Tayedrummer)Sure, if you game a lot. For Adobe, no. SLI is not supported. EOS.

Powered by Design May 21, 2010 3:26 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Harm ?
I remember Denis saying that CS5 was not going to support SLI months back.
Have you read or heard any reason why they dont do SLI ?
I wonder if they tried it and it wasnt worth it or just to hard to implement.
I dont play games so I never ran any cards in SLI but it does work for games.
On a side note: Your scores on the PPBM ( 14.8 ) are looking great with the new 480GTX.
I cant wait till they officially approve the card and see if that changes your time to even faster.

15. Re: 480GTX or FX5800? Help decide.
Harm Millaard May 21, 2010 4:35 AM (in response to Powered by Design)Glenn,
Apart from Dennis remarks I haven't heard anything about SLI, but personally I would prefer to have:
a. Better CUDA support for the certified cards, like DV over firewire for external monitor and export to tape.
b. More CUDA cards certified.
c. More CUDA effects, like Shadow & Highlight added.
d. The limit of three tracks increased on the GTX range, especially on the Fermi range.
e. Tesla support added.
f. Efforts to add OpenCL/ATI support.
and only then any efforts into SLI.
My gut feeling is that Tesla will do more than SLI, but it only is a feeling.
Just my $ 0.02
