kathleentownzen May 18, 2010 9:21 PM (in response to leuallen-BfBe3G)Well, it sure doesn't work for me!!! I get transparencies INSIDE THE SELECTION and the hair, I'm trying to include is gray instead of brunette!!! I'm about ready to return this thing! The "Content Aware" is awful! I also bought it for the extractions.... I do "layouts" for digital designers and it was the main selling point. Soooooo tell me..... what selection method do you use?

3. Re: Anyone have a refine edge/mask 'program error' failure?
leuallen-BfBe3G May 18, 2010 10:15 PM (in response to kathleentownzen)It works for me when it works. The problem is in 64bit after I get done make all of my adjustments the then press OK, I get a program error dialog box.
I make most of my masks using calculations and apply image unless it is real simple then I use the quick selection tool. Occasionally use the pen tool. Stick with it and learn the idosynchrisies of the tool. I've tried Fluid Mast and others and this seems that combined with other tools is nearly as good. You have to have a reasonable mask/selection to start with and as the name implies it will "refine edge".
The one feature I wish it had was some mechanism to apply different parameters to local areas. You have one area in which a certain blur etc. works well but it totally sucks in another area. I suppose you could make two masks and combine the areas with apply image. That's a lot of work. I am quality based not time pressured so I can do it.
Have not used content aware much yet so no comment.

leuallen-BfBe3G May 21, 2010 10:59 PM (in response to leuallen-BfBe3G)Go figure! Now it is working. Nothing changed on my computer that I can tell. I hope it stays this way.

Chris Sr 2 Sep 1, 2010 6:46 PM (in response to leuallen-BfBe3G)I've become afflicted with this problem today and I can say that the problem happens in BOTH 32 and 64 bit mode on a MacPro running OSX 10.6.4 and 14gb of memory.
Any words of wisdom out there?

7. Re: Anyone have a refine edge/mask 'program error' failure?
leuallen-BfBe3G Sep 1, 2010 7:42 PM (in response to Chris Sr 2)Chris,
My memory is a little fuzzy right now as to exactly what was causing the
problem. Anyway I don't encounter it much anymore.
If I remember correctly I had the mask attached to curves adjustment
layer and ran refine edges from there. Example I wanted to darken the
sky so I made a selection of the sky. The horizon had lots of trees
which needed the refine edge command to clean up. I ended up applying
the mask to the pixel based image and clipped the curves layer to it.
Same result as far as the adjustment goes but the refine edge command
worked with the mask attached to the pixel based image. So, if I
remember correctly, it was a non-pixel layer with the mask attached that
caused the problem. Maybe I was using Decontaminate colors which could
cause the problem on a non-pixel layer. Could be that it worked
sometimes because I did not use Decontaminate and failed when used.
Anyway, I avoid attaching mask to non-pixel layers if I am going to use
refine edge. Have not run into errors since, but then it could have been
fixed in 12.0.1 update. Or maybe the stars are aligned properly now. Who
knows?

Chris Sr 2 Sep 2, 2010 8:55 AM (in response to leuallen-BfBe3G)Larry,
Thanks for the reply. I stumbled across the solution. In the refine edge panel, there is an "Output" section with the selection dimmed out. If I select either "Mask" or "Selection" it works. Not sure why the default has it dimmed out if it's so important.
Thanks again.....Chris

Craig F Oct 27, 2010 12:08 PM (in response to Chris Sr 2)Thanks for this post. I experienced the issue today. Changing the output fixes the issue when the mask is attached to an adjustment layer.
