Steve Grisetti May 24, 2010 8:21 AM (in response to NotEnoughHours)Uh, what kind of effect are you trying to create?
In my "Cool Tricks" book, I show you how to create explosive effects.

You can see an example on this page under "Add a Shooting Star to Your Video."

NotEnoughHours May 24, 2010 10:04 AM (in response to Steve Grisetti)This is for a guy giving a seminar. The green screen is used so that we can show his powerpoint slides behind him. He wants to be able to use a laser pointer to "point" to specific places on - for example - photographs, diagrams and such...

Steve Grisetti May 24, 2010 11:47 AM (in response to NotEnoughHours)If you're talking about videotaping the man using a laser pointer onto a green screen and then chroma keying in a video in post and having the laser pointer still show -- I'm not sure that will work.
You can, of course, add your own indicators and call-outs in Premiere Elements. Arrows, circles, any of the clip art available in Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements. And that might be more effective than a laser pointer anyway.
Though it may take a bit more editing effort.

NotEnoughHours May 24, 2010 8:13 PM (in response to Steve Grisetti)Yeah - he's just really stuck on wanting to use a pointer. It's just not practicle as far as I can see. I agree - simple graphics will work better. Thanks for the responses!

5. Re: Using a laser pointer on a green screen shoot
Bill Hunt May 25, 2010 1:39 PM (in response to NotEnoughHours)Well, the actual laser pointer will disappear, once it is past the lecturer's body and over that part of the background, that will be Keyed out. BUT, you can create the "effect" of a laser pointer. Once you have the Keyed footage of the presenter, with the pointer in hand, you can create the laser "dot" on a Title, and have it go to the slide, with the fixed Effects>Motion>Scale and Motion>Position. You might want to add a bit of a Blur and can Fade it in & out with Keyframes for the fixed Effect>Opacity. Now, you will want to know which slide and where on that slide, he wants the pointer to be on - obviously, a script would be very useful.
Going back to the earliest days of image compositing, I found that "creating" a laser was MUCH easier, than actually photographing a real laser.
Good luck,
Hunt
