40. Re: problem with Premiere Pro CS5 project files bloating
NAT WILSON Jun 3, 2010 2:28 PM (in response to tclark513)Here's some info on the media I've been using in the projects which have bloated:
project a)
exclusively footage shot on Canon 5DIIs and Canon 7Ds, and brought straight into Premiere without transcoding, i.e. I'm editing quicktime H264 files as they came out of the camera.
project b)
a mixture of footage, shot on:
Sony EX3
Red One
the footage from the Sony and Red was run through the respective transcoding software that comes with the cameras meaning that I ended up bringing files into the project which are QuickTime ProRes and .mxf MPEG2 files. Having said that, I started off using the .MP4 files that came straight out of the EX3 but had some problems with the audio (this was when I was working in CS3, which I subsequently upgraded to CS5), so I then transcoded them and replaced the footage in my premiere project with the MXF files.

41. Re: problem with Premiere Pro CS5 project files bloating
jeremy d. Jun 3, 2010 3:57 PM (in response to NAT WILSON)OK, so we're looking at your projects.
You just mentioned Project A and Project B -- the original file and the bloated file do not have the same media?
- Also, you have several clips which have multiple instances of the Color Key -- why?
- You've got lots of video shoved out of frame, most notably the TC burn. I think there's a more efficient way to get the burn in than by using 1440x1080 black video clip. That's costing you time and performance right there.
- You've also got an effect called PR.Neat_Video that doesn't come with Premiere.
There's a lot going on in there. Man!

42. Re: problem with Premiere Pro CS5 project files bloating
NAT WILSON Jun 3, 2010 4:13 PM (in response to jeremy d.)Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for looking through the project.
Sorry for the confusion regarding project a) and project b) - what I meant was that this bloating problem has happened on two totally separate projects. Each project is completely self contained, for different clients and happening to be using media shot on different cameras, but still experiencing the bloating problem.
I did mention the Neat video plugin in a previous post when I talked about my hardware and software setup, but I can confirm that the project which used footage that came from Canon 5D and 7Ds bloated but did not have the Neat (grain reduction) plugin used in it.
Infact, that project is a smaller and more simple setup and I will send you a link for the project via PM.
I didn't know that shoving black out of frame cost performance and was a bad idea, but I do now and will do it differently from now on (probably a transparent layer with TC on that (as I've seen in one of the Adobe demos).
Regarding multiple instances of the colour key on a single clip, this will either be because I was toggling between two different grades to see which worked best or because I've screwed up!
thanks for your help with all this,
N

jeremy d. Jun 3, 2010 4:36 PM (in response to NAT WILSON)I didn't know that shoving black out of frame cost performance and was a

a transparent layer with TC on that (as I've seen in one of the Adobe
demos).Yeah, you're basically compositing an entire HD clip on top of your timeline when you do that. If it's me, I'm going to wait until the very end of the edit, and then add the burn. I might even nest the sequence into another of the same format, and then add the burn in to the nested sequence (I'd have to play with that, who knows if that would work as you're expecting.) If you use transparent video, You might get what you're looking for without having to shove the clip out of the frame.
Regarding multiple instances of the colour key on a single clip, this
will either be because I was toggling between two different grades to
see which worked best or because I've screwed up!That's easy enough to fix, either by disabling the unwanted key, or by doing the obvious, delete the extra key.
Somebody here can probably advise you as to the most efficient way to stack the effects on your clips. Lot of things can happen depending on the order of the effects.
I'll let you know what happens.

tclark513 Jun 3, 2010 7:02 PM (in response to NAT WILSON)A little info on our project...
Mac Platform
HDV
15 minute timeline.
Titles from the titler in Premiere.
That's it!
This project bloated to 10Gig...
One more thing I forgot...I don't know if it matters but CS4 is still installed next to CS5.

Nicketlareriksen Jun 4, 2010 12:25 AM (in response to jeremy d.)Hi everybody,
I have exactly the same problem. A file of 9,7 MB suddenly came up tp 1,13 GB. Saving takes 1 hour - but it does save. I have been working on this for about 2 days before looking into the forum. It doesn't make any sense.
This small project was STARTED in CS5. After doing a little editing the file went up to 15GB!! It is *very* frustating. I use HD footage as well and have no clue why this is happening....
There IS an issue - a bug in the release of some kind. I used Final Cut and will try this importing of the timeline.....hope it works. Thanks.
Regards,
Nick

47. Re: problem with Premiere Pro CS5 project files bloating
Nicketlareriksen Jun 4, 2010 1:00 AM (in response to NAT WILSON)Importing the timelines worked. Project went from 8GB to 6,2 MB. If you noticed my last post, the file I mentioned just bloated from about 1 GB to about 8 GB. Only change was moving a few keypoints in the the timeline.
If any Adobe employees want to see how a faulty project looks like, I can make it available on my idisc. Just let me know.

48. Re: problem with Premiere Pro CS5 project files bloating
Kevin7169 Jun 4, 2010 2:20 AM (in response to NAT WILSON)Guess I posted in haste. Thought at first I was suffering from the same issues as the rest of you: large project and cannot save. But although my project was huge, the project file was not nearly as large as these others. Regardless, I tried Jeremy's suggestion and tried importing the sequences into a new project. I first tried several times importing the entire project at once, but it kept freezing up. I thought it still had to do with the size so I tried a few smaller projects, each with only 2 timelines, saving it after each import. This seemed to work until I got to the last sequence. Every previous import took nearly 30 minutes, but this one would "import files" for several hours with no results. I even let it sit over ight and still nothing. There is obviously a glitch with this timeline, but it was identical in nature to the other timelines, just different footage of course. I now know I'm in the wrong thread, but does anyone have any suggestions so I don't have to rebuild this 2 hour video?
Entire project was a 7 day training course. Each timeline was 1 day's worth of video (from 1.5 to 3 hours, 1 video was over 5 hours so I split into 2), about 18 hours total. Added to this was about 400 powerpoint slides and titles. Shot with Canon XH-A1 through OnLocation CS3. I set up HDV 1080p30 sequences as that's what the the Canon shoots and imported the M2T files. Today I found out that these are AVCHD files. Could that be the problem? And how will that affect the video quality? If there's a big difference, I should just be able to use the track select tool and copy the whole timeline into an AVCHD timeline, right?

Unfortunately I can't get you a before without rebuilding the whole project. All the auto save projects ballooned so big none of them will open.
I don't know where in the process it happened.
Hopefully someone else can provide a before but I don't think that will be an easy task.
More details on the project...we were creating titles in the titler and the fonts went hay wire. Half the titles changed fonts to Courrier and half stayed the way they were soppsed to. Then later we restarted Premiere and the only font available was Helvetica 107 black obliuqe.

52. Re: problem with Premiere Pro CS5 project files bloating
Nicketlareriksen Jun 4, 2010 4:24 PM (in response to Wil Renczes)Hi Will,
Yes - that is no problem. I have time machine backups + a few "resaves" in an attempt to refresh the project.
1) A file before the problem (project evolved since)
2) 1,13 GB file of practically same project
3) Almost 8 GB file (saved version of the 1,13 GB file)
4) Think I could obtain the 15 GB version (but cannot say 100% if it works - I lost patience)
5) A new imported version from the 8 GB sequence import - about 7 MB.
How would you like to get this - I presume, you only need the project file? I can fit the 8GB+1GB on my idisc - but not the 15 GB as well....out of space.
Nick :-)

53. Re: problem with Premiere Pro CS5 project files bloating
Nicketlareriksen Jun 4, 2010 4:59 PM (in response to jeremy d.)Jeremy - about that job offer...;-9
Let me elaborate....I will be careful and mean well. I am impressed with Premiere and many of the new features - that should be made clear. Using Adobe products since mid 90'ies and beta-tester on numerous competitive products might have made me a demanding customer with high expectations, which Adobe have fulfilled and not lessened...
Like many others on the forum, I am also a professional who have invested time in a project, that should have been long finished. I lost days (and nights) on this due to the fact that file size and sluggishness following this caused enormous delay in editing, playing and saving. Saving a file that grows without radical "new content" in that scale indicates a problem...assuming it was not only me. Working with IT for another 10 years in one of this Denmark's biggest IT companies also give me an understanding of all the problems with software releases etc. There will be bugs - or unexpected user interactions that causes unforseeable....consequences....if you will :-) I just want the problem to go away - if that means emptying the "rendered" library once in a while or something else - then that is what I will do.
Your own suggestion worked great and that makes it possible to work while this is investigated. If I can help - by sending file examples or in another way, then it will be my pleasure to help out.
I have just heard from one of my "collegues" who had a growing project with only timeline editing....and all these posts shows that there is something to be dealt with.
I will, therefore - in a very careful, friendly and constructive voice repeat my first impression. Lets hunt it down together :-)
Kind regards,
Nick

By the way, we think we have a lead on what's going on. It seems to be a combination of rendering preview files and then duplicating the rendered sequences in your project. Eliminating the previews & resaving should bring it back down to size.

weemoo Jun 7, 2010 8:01 AM (in response to tclark513)I have also had this problem of project file bloating so that it takes up to 30 mins to save/load. Running windows 7, Raid 0, ATI 5700,
The suggested fix of deleting render files does seem to work, but obviously project needs to be rendered again once it has reduced in size.
Cannot enter a bug report as program does not actually crash it just takes an unacceptable time and disk space to save. Is there a way of creating a report so issue is logged as problem if the program does not actually crash?

Stan Jones Jun 7, 2010 10:09 AM (in response to jeremy d.)weemoo and others who need to know:
You don't need to have a crash to file a bug report. Just go here:
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
It's the same form that is used for feature requests.
And (whether it is Todd's new work or somethign old I hadn't notice), look at the "Read this before asking questions on this forum." at the top of every forum page. It has that feature request/bug report link and others, including one I didn't know about - the "Crash Reporter" that does what you were describing. (Todd, that link goes to After Effects titled info - any difference to how it works for CS5? Does it work for older CSx's?)
Jeremy, just one more example of how nice it is for an active Adobe presence here. Nice for weemoo to be told "don't bother to file, we got this one." Nice for all of us to know the problem is being worked on.

Yep. That was me.
The crash reporter is built into several (but not all) Adobe applications. I don't know the details of which versions of which applications have it integrated; except that I do know that After Effects has had it since CS4. You'll know that it's built in if your application crashes and the crash reporter dialog box opens.

65. Re: problem with Premiere Pro CS5 project files bloating
thirdeye-amsterdam Jun 19, 2010 1:42 AM (in response to NAT WILSON)First of all Nat, a big thanks for directing me to this thread. I really thought I was starting to go mad when a perfectly normally functioning project became a sluggish unworkable wet fish! My work originates in CS5, I am working on 1080P material, most of which is ProRes 422 HQ, although in Premiere it's flagged as EOS_DIGITAL and defaults to an AVC-100 sequence.
Be that as it may, I have been working perfectly happily until a few days ago, when everything suddenly ground to a halt. Finally I noticed that the project had jumped from 40 to over 200Mb, for no apparant reason. This larger project file could no longer be opened without freezing/crashing. I am not using any filters or plugins on the time line, but I do have about 30 mins worth of rendered 1080 previews.
For some reason I got an error when trying to import individual sequences into a new project. However deleting the preview files (about 3Gb) has done the trick. The project file went from 130 to 12 Mb.
Two things I have noticed:
1. when things go wrong, saving the project happens with a long pause when the progress bar pops up. It sits there for ages before it moves.
2. oddly, looking in the autosave folder I now see earlier versions of the project that went from 40 to 130Mb...and then back, without me noticing any problems. Presumably because I had the project open the whole time.
I hope this is fixed soon, but at least it helps knowing a workaround! If the Adobe guys n gals are interested in another before/after project file example, let me know and I can mail you a download link for idisk.

68. Re: problem with Premiere Pro CS5 project files bloating
drewski310 Jun 21, 2010 10:30 AM (in response to NAT WILSON)I'm glad to hear a fix is in the works. Add me to the list of project bloat sufferers. I was rendering with AME overnight and left my Premiere project open...the next morning I looked inside my auto-save folder and noticed a huge jump in my auto-saved project files during the night when I wasn't working on the project. My workaround was to abandon my current project file and use a "pre-bloat" auto-saved version as long as I can (and hope I didn't lose too much work) before it gets the bloats as well. I opened the task manager to see what's going on during a save of a bloated project, and the memory usage just keeps increasing until all my memory is used up and completely locks up my computer...not good!

Glad that you found this thread, especially as there are comments from Adobe on the issue. We are so very fortunate to have that presence, as most of us (mere users) would have been in the dark, and scratching our heads - until it happened to us.
Now, we just need to wait, and I am certain that the situation will be corrected.

Stephen Eckelberry Jun 21, 2010 5:14 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)My solution to bloating (outside of dieting) is to remove render files, that's the big one. Since I organize all my clips into timelines, on the project tab, I hit "Remove Unused," and it gets rid of all clips not in timelines.

SirQsDad Jul 10, 2010 2:44 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Perhaps I can make the tiny grey cell's go to work again.
I have the same problem as everyone else BUT the files are NOT getting bigger. The project was working fin until yesterday (changed opacity on a a few clips) and now anything takes forever. Saving takes 2-5 minutes. Project file is just 1.8MB. Rendering simple things takes 3-5 minutes per frame. 2 days ago the same project would render 15000 frames in 10 minutes, but now I will die of old age before it's done. Tried all the remedy in this thread but no difference.
Comp:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
8GB RAM
4 Core
No RAID
Pleeeeenty of free space
So the same problem or a new thread coming?

SirQsDad Jul 11, 2010 3:32 PM (in response to SirQsDad)So now it's proven. Being sober when working can help you sometimes.
Since I had to have this project done I stayed up this weekend day and night and late last night found the bad guy in my problem. When I removed BCC from the computer the problem suddenly was gone. I reinstalled it and tried to apply BCC Uprez on a new test project and when applying it everything went to slowmotion again. So bye bye BCC (at least until a update comes around. do want to use it so the $$ wasn't used in vain). For those who wounder why I use BCC (always someone who say why use that crappy software). At the time for purpose it was good money. Today it's bad money spent.
So my problem solved.

I was having similar problems to others - bloating project file and slow to open and save. Thought I should post my observations in case it can help.
I had 5 sequences in my project, 3 of which were temp sequences I was using to try stuff out. I deleted the unused sequences and my project file instantly went from 100MB to 2.5MB and it's way faster to open and save now.
Looking forward to the Adobe fix!
