2. Re: New HAF X case looks nice
Powered by Design Jun 8, 2010 12:18 AM (in response to Druyan Byrne)so many things to wait for.
first I waited for windows 7
then waited for CS5
then waiting for next CUDA card maybe the GTX480 ?
Now this CoolerMaster Case.
I was going to go with the HAF 932 till I saw this one.
They have made it better.
I dont know what I will have to wait for next but its getting close to build time.
At least the Core i7 980x six core is already out.
Also the SATA III 6GB/s are here too.
Now if we could just get the 24GB of RAM to be a lower price.
Oh to dream: GLenn

3. Re: New HAF X case looks nice
Druyan Byrne Jun 8, 2010 12:38 AM (in response to Powered by Design)Yes, I know... I get my CS5 Suite tomorrow--very excited! There will always be something to wait for--I know as soon as I build my system, something better will come out!
About the cheaper 24 GB memory... I found a 24GB kit of OCZ Gold on Tiger Direct for $700--that is the cheapest I've seen.
I have heard both good and bad about OCZ... so, I'll just have to find out for myself.
I have not tried it out yet, because I'm still waiting for my motherboard (ASUS Rampage III) to arrive (and of course, the HAF X).
I called OCZ Tech support to confirm compatibility, etc.-- and the only thing about getting this memory is that you have to relax the timings and run them at 11-11-11-30 to use all 24 GB. I am not enough of a computer wiz to know what that truly means in terms of real-world performance... but for that price, I am willing to give it a try!!

4. Re: New HAF X case looks nice
Powered by Design Jun 8, 2010 12:50 AM (in response to Druyan Byrne)I too was looking at the Rampage III
Im still thinking about my CPU cooler.
I want to go with the Noctua NH-D14 but have to make sure my RAM isnt to tall since the cooler is large and covers the RAM
Here is a picture of it on the Rampage III
He had DEMO version 001
This was a screen cap from Over Clocker 3D

This one shows small RAM the Corsair
Still thinking out my RAM

5. Re: New HAF X case looks nice
Druyan Byrne Jun 8, 2010 11:10 AM (in response to Powered by Design)Yes, I saw the same video about the Noctua NH-D14 fitting snugly over the RAM... I am thinking that the only way to know for sure is to try it and see, as I have not seen any exact measurements on the clearance. I am going to get the Noctua and then just return it if it does not fit.
I have decided for sure that I am going to get the Rampage III... it is over-kill in someways, as I'm not a gamer or extreme over-clocker, but I like the fact that it will be ready for future upgrades for me-- gotta haver USB 3 and SATA 3!
Sounds like we may end up with similar systems... let me know what you decide! In addition to the HAF X, the Noctua, and the Rampage, I'll be getting the i7 980x, the GTX 480, the 24 GB I mentioned earlier. Still deciding on my hard drives-- will be some combination of the Velociraptors and Caviar Blacks-- both SATA2 and SATA3.

9. Re: New HAF X case looks nice
Powered by Design Jun 9, 2010 4:42 AM (in response to Druyan Byrne)Is this the RAM you were talking about ?
It has timing of 9-9-9-20
not the best timing but it is 24GB though at only $699 so that isnt only about double what 12GB would be.
Looking at the size they look like there the same height as regular ram and the same as the corsair that are in the screen cap above so they should work fine with the Noctua D-14.
I too want the 980x with maybe the GTX480 too.
Just waiting for ADOBE to approve the cards first.
Harm says that the GTX470 should be soon and the GTX480 in Q3 so not to much waiting to go.
Its going to be a sweet build anyway.

Druyan Byrne Jun 9, 2010 6:33 PM (in response to Powered by Design)GLenn:
Yep, that's the memory. I have it here on my desk... as you say, it does not look too tall to fit under the Noctua.
True, the timings are not great--and to get access to all 24 GB, you must run them even slower at 11-11-11-30. (This is according to OCZ Tech support--something not mentioned in the Tiger description. It still may be worth it to try them at the advertised timings first).
Still, for 24 GB... do you think these slow timings will really make a noticable difference? Any experience with that?
I figure, even if I only use this memory for a year or so, by then the price of a new set of 24 GB sticks should have come down quite a bit.

12. Re: New HAF X case looks nice
Powered by Design Jun 9, 2010 10:38 PM (in response to Druyan Byrne)Im still working with my slow Windows XP with only 4GB so im not sure how those will run.
Im thinking that the 24GB will make up for the slower timings but thats a guess.
Make sure to run the PPBM4 or if the new PPBM5 if its out when you get your system up and running.
My XP is second from last at 329.6 while Harms top one is not 8.5
http://ppbm4.com/Benchmark.html
What a difference.
He has that huge R30 raid though
I cant wait to get to those scores.
No more waiting hours to do a couple minute video.
