To date, I've seen this message on 3 of our agency's systems.
Two of the systems are running XP with IE6, one with Vista
and IE7. The XP systems are running Adobe Reader 7, the Vista
Adobe Reader 8. I've tried updating/repairing, uninstalling and re-installing, etc. It only seems to be happening with one website,
but the other XP systems in the department running Reader 7 and the same OS have no issues??? Two of the systems are Dell towers, with Intel processors, and one is an HP laptop. The website just points me to Adobe
to get the latest version of Adobe Reader.

The PDF that Acrobat Reader can't open is not an e-mail attachment.
Thus, the mentioned solution in TechNote does not apply.

It's not opening the PDF through the browser. "It" isn't an e-mail attachment and nothing got to the computer, nor can it be saved to the system and opened.

Then it sounds like there is a problem on their end. Especially if you can't right-click and save to your hard drive and open from there.

If you can do that, first confirm that it is indeed a PDF. If it is, open it in Word or a text editor and see if the file starts with %PDF-. If not, it's either not a PDF (regardless of the name) or it is corrupt.

Can you post a link to the problem PDF?

Is the file public, so that you could share the URL with us?

Hello,

Has anyone come to a solution on this?  We have the same issue:

  • Several PDF's were uploaded to our website (link here)
  • from WITHIN our company, when you select the link for this PDF, the

File does not begin with '%PDF-' error appears

  • Outside of the company on other PC's the file opens just fine, no issues

  • We are going to try and uninstall/reinstall Adobe 9 with the latest version tomorrow

  • Has anyone seen a resolution?

    Thanks,

    Sean

If the file does not begin with '%PDF', then it is not a valid PDF file.  It may have become corrupted during the upload.  You can easily check it with a hex file viewer.

Why want you see the resolution? In Adobe Acrobat you can check the resolution of images in pdf files.
