I'm having a somewhat similar problem. I have Adobe CS4 Design Premium, and yet the Adobe Updater for Acrobat tries to run; when it does, it comes up with error 1602. (This machine does not have Reader.)

This is possibly a Windows Installer error and not an Acrobat error. From the MS support site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229683 error 1602 seems to be 'User Cancel Installation'!!!

Acrobat Updater also has an Error 1602.

See this:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83709/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_Updater.pdf

Unfortunately it seems they are still deciding on a solution. However it seems to indicate that it is possibly a permissions problem as it relates to SE_ERR_ACCESSDENIED which evaluates as: 'operating system denied access to the specified file'.

There are lots of references to this problem elsewhere especially on programming forums relating to the ShellExecute Windows API.

Do you have administrator rights on your PC?

Thanks for the log.

By the way, your issue is related to Adobe Reader - next time please use Reader forum.

The error is indeed in  ShellExecute :

[2010-06-13 15:35:11] Command line: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Reader\9.2\ARM\ARM Update\ReaderUpdater.exe C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Reader\9.2\ARM\ARM Update\ReaderUpdater.exe

[2010-06-13 15:35:11] ShellExecute failed in RelaunchARM.

[2010-06-13 15:35:11]    Error Code: 0x2

Does not look like access problem though

Could be similar to the problem discussed here

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/620329?tstart=0

When you get to "Ready to install" dialog, check if any files exist in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Reader\9.2\ARM\ARM Update

If they are, use the following solution:

This folder will have 4 files in it.

Make sure AdobeARM.exe file is version 1.1.7.0 and it has valid Adobe digital signature by right mouse click on the file and look at the file properties.

Copy all these files into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0

Exit updater if present.

Start Reader and select Help\Check for updates menu.

Updater should be fine now.

If files do not exist,

Save AdbeRdr930_en_US.msi and  AdbeRdrUpd932_all_incr.msp from C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Reader\9.2\ARM folder somewhere

Exit updater - you may have to kill the AdobeARM.exe process from Task Manager

Install updates in the follwing order

first install  AdbeRdr930_en_US.msi

next install  AdbeRdrUpd932_all_incr.msp

I had a similiar problem downloading and updating Office 2007 on my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system. The way I got it to work is the following:

  1. Control Panel --> User Account. Click "User Account Control Settings"
  2. Set the slider in the panel to the bottom.
  3. Restart your system.
  4. Repeat step 1. Return the UAC Setting (slide) to the default security setting (usually second from top).
  5. Restart your system again.

This seems to be a bug in Windows 7 and Vista systems.

Good luck.

You probably won't find any files in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Reader\9.2\ARM\ARM Update\ as you haven't managed to connect to the download URL. Try cutting and pasting the URL into your browser to determine if you can actually reach the download page.

AdobeARM is trying to update itself and is not able to. Check that the ARM.msi is present and accessible

A possible workaround is to manually download and install the updates or if you only use Reader, try uninstalling and install a freshly downloaded version.
