RH8 makes breadcrumbs in HTML Help, not in WebHelp?

My RH8 project makes excellent breadcrumbs when the output is HTML Help, but when the output is WebHelp, the breadcrumb is comletely missing.

Every topic uses a Master Page, and the Master page calls for a logo, a breadcrumb, and a copyright footer.

In the HTML Help output, all is perfect.

In the WebHelp output, the Logo and the copyright footer appears on every topic, but the breadcrumb is nowhere to be found.

What gives?

Hi there

Can you please post a picture of what you are seeing? Are you using the same Table of Contents for each output?

Cheers... Rick

Here is a screenshot from the HTML Help output with a breadcrumb "App Button > New", plus a screenshot from the WebHelp output with no breadcrumb at all. (Ignore the strange turquoise shading). Shouldn't the breadcrumbs appear identically in both output types?

Hi there

Well, yes one would think that would be the case.

With RoboHelp 8, you have two different ways to insert Breadcrumbs. You may insert them at generation time where they are added to each topic, or you may insert them into a Master Page and either associate the Master Page with topics or build new topics based on the master page. Sometimes folks do both (Master Page with Placeholder AND Breadcrumbs at generation time) and they grow confused because they end up with two levels of breadcrumbs.

Question here. I also know that it's possible to force association with a specific Master Page when you generate. You might want to double-check to ensure that you aren't doing this. My thought here is that if you inadvertently selected this option and the new Master Page didn't have Breadcrumbs as part of it, this could explain it.

Cheers... Rick

I realized that I had the "compile-time breadcrumb" checkbox checked in ADDITION to having a breadcrumb-thing on the master page, so I un-checked it on the compile settings in hopes that it would fix the problem.

No, I still have no breadcrumbs in WebHelp output, and perfect breadcrumbs in HTML Help output.

Any more ideas?

Hi,

Can you create a new test project and experiment with the breadrumbs. Does RH generate the breadcrumbs correctly in your test project?

Greet,

Willam

Is it possible that you have a conditional tag on the breadcrumb?

Yes it is but beware that if the breadcrumbs are added at compile time rather than in a topic, the conditional build tag is ignored.

I FINALLY had SUCCESS with breadcrumbs by compiling WebHelp PRO instead of WebHelp Plain.

Is there a good reason that WebHelp Plain failed to make breadcrumbs?

Don't knock yourself out thinking, though, because the correct results have been achieved and I'm happy (usually).

Whilst I'm happy you're happy don't forget that WebHelp Pro output has a different type of output file that is designed to be used in conjunction with the RoboHelp Server application.

Just to add to Colum's comments, I have an uncomfortable feeling that other things might break. Test very thoroughly.
