    Moving Catalogs and Folders

    Deep Woods Community Member

Using LR 3 -  After importing pictures from my camera to a notebook I need to archive everything to 2 external hard drives. When finished, I need the image files out of the computer, but the previews to remain. I've found a few workflows for this online and they are very complex. Can anyone here suggest an easy sequence that doesn't require 15 steps. Finally, if I connect to the primary hard drive and edit some images, what would be the easiest way to update the data in the secondary hard drive.

Speak slowly - I'm new to this.

      Much appriciated.

          a) delete the files on the local harddrive with your operating system. (the preview is still there.Going to develop will give a message that the file is offline)

          b) write the changes on the files of disk a to an xmp file and backup that xmp to the second disk b. That xmp contains the changes. The RAW is not altered at all.

Do you want to have two separate copies of the same photos or spread your image library into two because they won't fit onto one?

I assume the former... If the former, then move them from notebook to the first external HD. Open Lightroom, right-click the top-level folder and update the location. After that, you can mount and unmount the external drive, but your catalog will still see previews and you'll be able to edit metadata.

Just use some sync software to keep the two external drives in sync.

Easy to do and it works. I couldn't find anything this simple after 2 days of searching online.

                Thank you,
