    Faster ponies

As some of you know, my last few posts have been regarding Premiere CS4 and the editing of AVCHD footage. Since one solution to the performance problem is simply buying faster ponies, I thought I'd poke around Dell for a bit and look at the options. That said, I'm not sure of which direction to lean regarding processor choice - the number of cores or the clock speed.

For example, the system requirements for CS4 say:

2GHz or faster processor for DV; 3.4GHz for HDV; dual 2.8GHz for HD.

Does this mean that for HDV, a dual core 3.4GHz processor would be a better choice than, say, a quad or even six core of only 2.8GHz?

If I go this route, it'll probably be  a 64 bit version of Windows 7 which among other things gives me the option for more memory than the 4 gig limit. With the understanding that more is always better in this regard, I'd be interested in knowing how much memory those of you doing high def stuff are running with.

And of course, any observations, suggestions or hot tips on a good box that doesn't require a second mortgage are always welcome.
