yes
this is what i have noticed, while converting HD to SD today.
Basically if I use adobe media encoder to export the files to mpeg-2 dvd, then the gpu is not getting used (only cpu). if I use the export option within premiere then the gpu and cpu are working together.

Harm Millaard Jul 6, 2010 10:31 AM (in response to Studio North Films)Baz,
You are correct that using the direct Export option from PR uses the GPU to a large degree, up to 92% and CPU load remains far below 50%.
Using AME the GPU load is below 30% and CPU load peaks at 95% and averages around 70%.
AME does not use MPE acceleration. But keep in mind that PR and AME use different plug-ins for the export process. In fact, AME export is much more efficient than the direct Export option often resulting in less than half the time, sometimes even only 35% of the Export time. I have no idea what the GPU is being tasked to do during direct Export, but efficient it in not. It probably has to do with the continuous context switching required: CPU - GPU - CPU and RAM - GDDR - RAM that causes this delay, but I'll see what I can find out.

4. Re: mpeg 2 DVD CS5/AME problems
D&R Films Jul 6, 2010 6:28 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)The odd part about this is... Didn't Dave Helmly show MPE being so much faster at encoding using the GPU back before CS5 was released?
Lemme see if I can find the video...
http://blogs.adobe.com/genesisproject/2009/11/technology_sneek_peek_adobe_me.html#more
Well... It should be faster according to Dave because it's now not a 3 step process, but a one step process... So, MPE isn't *using* the GPU, but the effects in premiere are and that makes exporting faster even in MPE... Right?
So, even tho it's not specifically using the GPU, MPE should still be faster with a Cuda card.

Studio North Films Jul 22, 2010 9:25 AM (in response to Studio North Films)Update:
my new workflow is xdcam ex, and I find the export within premiere is 10x faster than AME.
