1. Re: CS4: Best use of SSD drives?
Harm Millaard Jul 7, 2010 8:05 AM (in response to Christopher Duncan)Chris,
First of all, CS4 is 32 bit only.
Where you could potentially benefit the most from a single SSD depends very much on your total disk setup. But my feeling is that money spent on a single SSD is better used to buy 3 or 4 additional 1 TB Spinpoint F3 disks and improve your setup. For around the same amount you will get much more storage and better performance.
Have you read this: Adobe Forums: Generic Guideline for Disk Setup

2. Re: CS4: Best use of SSD drives?
Christopher Duncan Jul 7, 2010 8:15 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Hi, Harm.
Reading the disk article as we speak, thanks.
Regarding CS4 being 32 bit, I recall you saying the other day that a minimum realistic system would be 12 gigs fo memory. Given the 4 gig limit in the 32 bit architecture, were you referring to CS5? Not sure how CS4 would benefit from > 4 gigs.

3. Re: CS4: Best use of SSD drives?
Harm Millaard Jul 7, 2010 8:22 AM (in response to Christopher Duncan)Chris, I was mainly speaking about CS5, but CS4, although being a 32 bit application, has been optimized to use more memory than 4 GB, so even in CS4 it pays off to have more memory.

4. Re: CS4: Best use of SSD drives?
Christopher Duncan Jul 7, 2010 8:29 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)I notice the drives you recommend are 7200 rather than 10k. When spreading i/o out over three or more drives, does the difference between the two speeds become negligable?

5. Re: CS4: Best use of SSD drives?
Harm Millaard Jul 7, 2010 8:46 AM (in response to Christopher Duncan)I think it is about bang-for-the-buck. The F3 is indeed 7200, but local prices for the 1 TB F3 are around € 58, the alternative WD CB 1 TB SATA III is € 82 and the WD Veliciraptor 600 GB is around € 250. The price difference more than justifies the marginal performance gains if there are any, and in tests the F3 is usually the fastest 7200 disk.

6. Re: CS4: Best use of SSD drives?
Christopher Duncan Jul 7, 2010 8:48 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Kinda figured that was the case. I'm big on bang for the buck, so that's worth knowing.
