TWAIN - The TWAIN scanner plug-in is no longer installed with Photoshop CS5, but is available via web download. Supported when running Photoshop CS5 on 32-bit Windows or 32-bit Mac OS. Also supported as a 64-bit application on 64-bit Mac OS with scanners that support 64-bit scanner drivers. The TWAIN scanner plug-in is also supported if you run Photoshop CS5 as a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows or 64-bit Mac OS.

Chris Cox Jul 9, 2010 10:37 AM (in response to Matthew A Kraus)Are you running Photoshop 64 bit? In that case, there is no TWAIN driver and you would be relying on WIA drivers.
Are you running Photoshop 32 bit? Did you download the optional TWAIN driver plugin? (not installed by default because too many drivers cause crashes that customers find difficult to diagnose)

3. Re: Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner doen't show up in PSCS5
Matthew A Kraus Jul 9, 2010 6:26 PM (in response to Chris Cox)Though I have 64 bit version, I know from using CS4 that the twain driver
only works in 32 bit. So I am using 32 bit now in CS5, but still do not see
the Scanner. So I tried downloading the twain driver plug-in as
suggested and tried the following without success...
I downloaded the twain plug-in (Twain_32.8BA. After downloading it, I first
tried double clicking on it and it tried to open 32 bit PSCS5 and I got
similar error message. Then I pasted the Twain_32.8BA file into the 32 bit
PSCS5 Plug-in folder and tried opening Photoshop and got same error. Is
there a better way to "install" this twain plug-in, or perhaps is that not
the fix. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Matthew Kraus

My thought is that you didn't read the instructions that came with the download!
If you had you'd have realised that you have to place the plug-in in C:\Program files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe PhotoshopCS5\Plug-ins\Import-Export

Franck Quenot Oct 19, 2010 2:01 PM (in response to John Joslin)Hi there,
I have exactly the same problem with PS CS5 bits installed on Windows 7 64 bits.
I have downloaded the same plugin too and placed it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\Import-Export like explain in instructions.... without more success.
I have a french version, perhaps a subtility hidden somewhere.
Thank's a lot for your help
