1. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
Bill Hunt Jul 13, 2010 11:51 AM (in response to KarizmaticMojo)What is the Quality setting on the Program Monitor? Try Highest. What is the Magnification setting? Try 100%.
What are your Playback settings in CS5?
What are the Assets in this older Project and what was the Project Preset used?
Good luck,
Hunt

Bill Hunt Jul 13, 2010 1:01 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)Colin,
Thanks for that update and pointer. Heck, I learned something from this post!

4. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
KarizmaticMojo Jul 13, 2010 6:44 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thanks, guys. I do have the Premiere CS5 Quality Setting set to Full. It has nothing to do with my monitor settings because any brand new footage, that was never edited in CS4, that I import into CS5 looks fine. It must have something to do with the CS4 to CS5 conversion. Any other suggestions? This is P2 footage shot with my HPX170 at 1080 24p Advanced, if that helps. ???

5. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
Colin Brougham Jul 13, 2010 6:52 PM (in response to KarizmaticMojo)Try importing one of the clips into a new CS5-only project; that'll get us somewhere.
Have you updated your graphics card drivers recently? What sort of card?

6. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
KarizmaticMojo Jul 13, 2010 7:19 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)Okay. I will do that and report back to you how it looks. So, are you thinking I may have to open a new CS5 project, import the old CS4 Sequence, and then freshly import all the video files into the new project? I was thinking I might have to do that to fix this problem.

7. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
Colin Brougham Jul 13, 2010 7:40 PM (in response to KarizmaticMojo)Well, there's really no rationale for the project conversion to somehow drastically alter the appearance of footage, particularly something like DVCPROHD. Adobe changed the way its software handles pixel aspect ratios between CS3 and CS4, but that affects SD footage, not HD footage. There may be some degree of weirdness since in CS3, you had a project that was set to a specific format/frame rate/codec/whatever, whereas in CS4 and later the project is just a container for sequences of any and all types.
Instead of opening the original project and going through the conversion, try creating a new project and importing the old project as if it were any other media file. Premiere will reconstruct the old project within the new one; this probably is not going to have any change, but it's worth a shot.
Can you describe (or better, show) the pixelation you're referring to? It's hard to visualize without, well, a visual, and that might help better pinpoint the issue. Also, is the pixelation only during playback, or is while the clip is paused in the sequence, as well?

8. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
jeremy d. Jul 14, 2010 9:32 AM (in response to Colin Brougham)What Colin said ^
- Try the media first.
- Then try to import the project into a new CS5 project. Don't worry about what sequence settings to use when you first create that CS5 project, it won't affect what you're doing here.
When you open a CS3 project with CS5 (or CS4), Premiere looks at the original project's preset or settings, and attempts to create sequences in the new project using the corresponding CS5 preset or group of settings. It is not always possible to create an exact match, so Premiere gets as close as it can.
You also, in the middle of this thread, started referring to CS4. Did you try this with CS4 as well?

9. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
Bill Hunt Jul 14, 2010 7:47 AM (in response to KarizmaticMojo)Importing your Project into a new Sequence will not require having to Import the Assets. So long as you have not moved the Assets, they should link up just fine.
Good luck,
Hunt

KarizmaticMojo Jul 14, 2010 9:34 AM (in response to KarizmaticMojo)Sorry, guys. I meant CS3, not CS4. I will try creating a new CS5 project and import the CS3 sequence into that project and hopefully that will solve the problem. Is there a way for me to take a screenshot and upload it onto here so you guys can see the pixelation I am referring to?

12. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
KarizmaticMojo Jul 14, 2010 11:11 AM (in response to KarizmaticMojo)Hey guys, when I create a brand new CS5 project and then go to import my old CS3 project, it asks me if I want to import the entire project or just the sequence. Which one should I choose?

13. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
KarizmaticMojo Jul 14, 2010 11:21 AM (in response to KarizmaticMojo)Okay, I chose "Import entire project" and played the footage on the timeline and the problem still exists. I can better describe the "pixelation" like this. All the edges look like steps instead of smooth lines. For instance, the actors are wearing hard hats and instead of smooth outlines of the hard hats, the edges look like jagged steps. But, its not just the hard hats, all the edges have these step atrifacts, even the mountains in the background. The only thing that doesn't have "steps" is the 90 degree vertical edge of the building behind them. Probably because its perfectly straight up and down. Any suggestions?

14. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
Colin Brougham Jul 14, 2010 11:51 AM (in response to KarizmaticMojo)What happened when you imported one of your original clips, by itself, into a brand new CS5 project?
Can you upload a copy of your ORIGINAL project file somewhere? No media, just the PRPROJ file. And not one that's been converted...
I have a feeling that the project is creating a sequence that doesn't match your footage. Have you also tried creating a new sequence in the converted project using the DVCPROHD 1080/24p preset, and dropping one of your clips into it?

15. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
KarizmaticMojo Jul 14, 2010 8:51 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)Okay, this is really weird. I just opened a brand new DVCPRO HD 1080 24p project (same settings I used to edit my footage in CS3) and imported a clip and it STILL looks as bad! What the heck is going on with CS5?! How could a brand new DVCPRO HD 1080 24p project make my 1080 24pa clip look like that?! It looks exactly like what I described before with the "steps" interlace looking artifacts! This is insane! It makes no sense whatsoever!

16. Re: In Premiere CS5, I opened an old project I had edited using Premiere CS3 and now its all pixelated!
Colin Brougham Jul 15, 2010 4:20 AM (in response to KarizmaticMojo)As I mentioned previously, it would be helpful to take a look at your project file (or files). If you can zip them up and upload them somewhere, I'd be happy to download them and check them out.
You could also create a simple, one-clip project with a short clip (since this is causing the pixelation, as well), and then run the Project Manager to consolidate the media. That would be an even better way to diagnose the issue.
