1. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
Harm Millaard Jul 26, 2010 3:36 PM (in response to AudoWarp)OK, 4 logical drives. Is the last one a raid0 or a raid10? Start here and look at the 4 disk line: Adobe Forums: Generic Guideline for Disk Setup

2. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
AudoWarp Jul 26, 2010 3:38 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)I was under the impression that matrix raid meant that it was both 0 and 10 at the same time.

3. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
Harm Millaard Jul 26, 2010 3:44 PM (in response to AudoWarp)No, they are completely different. Raid0 is single level striping and no parity, Raid10 is multilevel with parity. Read here: Adobe Forums: To RAID or not to RAID, that is the...

4. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
AudoWarp Jul 26, 2010 3:52 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Okay, I'm getting closer....
Should I call the single F3 " D:"
The two F3 Raid 0 "E:"
And the 4 f3 Raid 0/10 "Matrix Raid" "F:" ?
I was given the impression that my 4 disk "matrix" RAID was fastest, so maybe I should Make it "E:"?
What needs the most speed? Media Cache or Render? Media Storage?
What is "media cache?" Is it the same as "scratch file"? Preview file?
What is "pagefile?" Is it like a "scratch disk"?
When RAIDs have a sufficient number of drives, you can just throw everything under the same drive letter?

5. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
AudoWarp Jul 26, 2010 3:55 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)I'm sorry, its a 4 disk "Matrix RAID", which combines RAID 0 and RAID 1.

6. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
Harm Millaard Jul 26, 2010 4:08 PM (in response to AudoWarp)C: OS & programs
D: (single F3) stock footage, downloads, music, etc.
E: (2 x Raid0) page file, media cache, media cache database, previews
F: (4 x Raid10) media, projects, exports.
The F drive has parity, so if you lose a drive, nothing is lost, which is important for media, projects and exports. You can consider exporting to D.
The E drive may fail, but so what. Pagefile, media cache, media cache database and previews can easily be recreated.

7. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
AudoWarp Jul 26, 2010 4:14 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)Is it efficient to have Premiere make a render to the same array footage is stored on?
Writing to the same array it is reading from?

8. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
Harm Millaard Jul 26, 2010 4:20 PM (in response to AudoWarp)Previews on E and media on F are two different arrays. So what do you mean?

9. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
AudoWarp Jul 26, 2010 4:29 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)On F (4x RAID MATRIX) you say store" media, projects, exports." Does "media" mean what came off my camera?
Or is that "stoack footage" stored on D (single F3).
Surely everything that comes of the Camera card and stored (where?) is not converted into a preview and put onto the "preview drive--E: (2xRAID 0).

10. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
Harm Millaard Jul 26, 2010 4:34 PM (in response to AudoWarp)Media = source material on F.
Previews = rendered files on E.

11. Re: 8 drives, two RAIDs. Now What?
AudoWarp Jul 26, 2010 4:51 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)What am I "exporting" then, if not rendered files? You say "exports" go on F, and media is transferred from the camera to F.
So I do export my timeline to a file rendered on the same drive that the source footage is stored on?
