1. Re: restart numbers after previous level CS5
BobLevine Jul 28, 2010 6:57 AM (in response to E Diane King)You'd have to post that file for us to look at. No way to easily tell from the description.

3. Re: restart numbers after previous level CS5
E Diane King Jul 28, 2010 7:10 AM (in response to E Diane King)I don't know how to post the actual file, but here is a picture of a page that demonstrates the problem. The sidebar lists are embedded into the text and flow with the main text. The list after the heading "Pre-prep" in the second box should be restarting at 1. The heading is a level one numbered list and the preprep list is a level 2 set to restart numbering after any previous level. But it doesn't restart.

BobLevine Jul 28, 2010 7:28 AM (in response to E Diane King)Change the mode of the heading (with no number) from continue from previous number to Start At.

Tom Usrey Jul 28, 2010 7:30 AM (in response to E Diane King)Just a thought -- there is no Return at the end of the paragraph that has the number "1". What happens if you add it?

7. Re: restart numbers after previous level CS5
E Diane King Jul 28, 2010 8:06 AM (in response to BobLevine)Thanks, Bob. Changing that setting on the level one header fixed it. I figured I was doing something wrong.

8. Re: restart numbers after previous level CS5
E Diane King Jul 28, 2010 8:24 AM (in response to E Diane King)An additional thought on this solution:
Does it make sense to have to set the previous level to always start at 1 to get the next level to restart to 1? Though it doesn't effect my current application, I could see how it would be functionally useless to have that restart standard when using an outline format. In most outlines the sublists restart after each instance of a previous level, even when the previous levels do not restart.
Example.
I First level
A Second level
1 Third level
2 Third level
3 Third level
B Second level
1 Third level
2 Third level
II First level
A Second level
1 Third level
etc.
See my point? If you have to set the First or Second levels in my example to always restart at one to get the next levels to automatically restart at 1 after a previous level occurance, this type of standard outline would not work automatically in InDesign.

9. Re: restart numbers after previous level CS5
DejanMag Dec 13, 2012 6:59 AM (in response to E Diane King)I've found that my problem with this exact situation was that I have not been using the same Numbering List.
When I put all my levels to the [Default] list (or just the same custom list whatever it is) everything worked as you would expect here, I think Diane.
As you can see here I have 3 levels of numbered lists and the only key change is the Level number there,
and not the lists like I first thought.
They need to be the same as the other sub lists and it's probbably why you are experiencing the problem described here.I know this is an old topic but I've just stumbled across it with the same problem so if anybody else does give it a try.
