How can I view detailed GPS information?

    DVDmike Community Member

I can see the GPS  link in the Library information and it sends me right to Google maps.  This is great, but how can I see more detailed information such as altitude and heading which I know are stored in the file?  Do I need a 3rd party app to view this information?  Or, is there a way in lightroom to reveal it?

Lr by itself only shows the coordinates and altitude. However, Jeffry Friedl's Lr geo encoding plug-in displays a lot more info. You can get more info at http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/gps

But I cannot even see altitude?  Where do I find altitude information?

Other than it not having been written to EXIF I have no idea why it isn't visible. Lightroom definitely shows altitude when it is present in EXIF (see screenshot)

Oh, that is disturbing because I know that it is in the file because I can see it when  I review the information in camera.  I hope that the information did not get stripped off when I imported these files in lightroom?  Does anyone have any idea what could have happened between the card and lightroom for LR not to think that there is altitude information?

What camera and GPS device are you using, and what file format are you shooting?

If you post the following two files, I'd like to take a closer look at your problem. Please post a file directly from the camera and not modified by any software, ex: copied from the card to your hard drive with the Finder or Explorer. Then import the file from your card into Lightroom and send the imported file.

                  Thanks,

                  David

I get altitude too for those shots that have gps info. You do have to enable the EXIF, location, or all metadata view in the popup. Lightroom will not show the altitude in the default view, but will only show the longitude and lattitude coordinates, so it might simply be that you have the wrong metadata view enabled.

                    How was Independence pass?

Jao, how does one "enable the EXIF, location, or all metadata view in the popup"?  What is the view popup?  Maybe this is the problem?

Independence pass was outstanding.  The photos that I took there were not as spectacular as some of the RMNP photos, but this had more to do with weather conditions than anything else.  I would highly recommend the drive up and down to from Independence pass.  Loveland pass (also free) was also surprisingly good.  And MT Evans was so scary that I had to turn back before reaching the summit.

David, these are from Nikon D3X files with an EasyTag GPS.  Do you want me to e-mail you RAW NEF files. They are quite large (27-30MB)?

                          Hi Mike,

If I'd looked more carefully at your screenshot, I would have at least known you were using a D3x, sorry.

Lets see if you can resolve the problem by changing Lr's UI first. The attached screenshot shows the Metadata panel and the tooltip (in yellow, "Metadata Set") that appears when you hover your mouse over the Metadata Set control -- the combo box just to the left of the large "Metadata" label at the top of the panel, and currently set to "EXIF".

It's a popup in the metadata viewing area. See below. The popup in the left top should say EXIF or one of the other options that give full GPS metadata I mentioned above. See the attached screenshot.

Living in CO myself, I've been to both places many times. Do you live in Colorado, or just passing through?

Haha. You should try biking up that road ;-) I have skied off the neighboring 14er - Mount Bierstadt in spring which is quite an experience I can tell you.

David, perfect, that was it.  I did not even know that that little box was there for anything.  It was set to "default" and I changed to EXIF and it is there now. Thank you!

A new one that I did not know even existed is "subject distance".  I guess this only kicks in when you use flash.  This has opened up a new world of information for me.

I was just visiting CO for a week.  Absolutely spectacular there!  I could not drive 1/4 of a mile without wanting to take the next series of photos.

On my first day into RMNP, I got pelted with marble sized hail while driving at about 11,000FT.  In 10 minutes, the road had 2" of accumulation.  The rental car was significantly damaged. later in the week as I was driving up MT Evans (where they don't believe in guardrails and the outside lanes are narrower than the inside lanes), it started hailing again.  Time constraints and my fear of driving or sliding off of a cliff got the better of me and I turned around as soon as I could.  The hail was not nearly as bad as before, but I had had enough!  I want to go back and have someone else drive me up there!

I saw lots of bikers (cyclists) going up these summits.  Absolutely incredible energy that you guys have.  I wish that I could do that.
