Install Adobe Flash player 10.1 popup will not stop popping up!

I have been trying for 3 weeks to rid my computer of the "install adobe flash player" popup. I have installed and  uninstalled Flash Player as advised many times and contacted every forum I can find.  I don't believe I should have to pay a fee to remove something Adobe installed on my computer without my knowledge (the popup reminder), The popup appears every time I start a program that may use it at least 15-20 times a day. I'm using windows XP Pro service pack 3. I use AOL and IE ver 8 for most of my browsing.  Thanks for any assistance.

This really seems to be specific to AOL; I found this other topic http://forums.adobe.com/message/2910121 (unresolved).

The question is: where does that pop-up come from - what triggers it?  Is it something that is issued during startup?

Can you check msconfig if there are any startup items that might indicate something Adobe or FP?

Also, are there any AOL forums that may address AOL browser / add-on issues?  (Where you could search for FP_AX_CAB_INSTALLER.exe)

Not sure if that pop-up is genuine - are you sure that your computer is free from malware?

Can you see the Flash animation at http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ and is there a version information beneath it?

What files do you have in folder C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash ?

Go to http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager05.html and uncheck "Notify me if an update to Adobe Flash Player is available."

Does the pop-up still appear after this?

Thank you for the screenshot.  This is very curious; this should not pop up automatically - this is the panel we see when we manually launch the FP installer.

When you see that panel again next time, can you check the Task Manager (Processes tab) if you see something 'adobe...' and/or 'install_flash_player...' running?

I think using your suggestion we've found a clue.. started task manager determined following app line was appearing when popup popped...FP_AX_CAB_INST..

ran search for file and found many copies in perfetch and a text log "SetupAPILog" which probably explains whats going on. I will attempt to send in this message

I also ran a "regedit find" found several "keys" with the file name and the word conflict mostly so far in downloaded program files (approx 500)  approximately 100 referenced them selves to flash player install.

I will copy log to you below and wait for next suggestion  hope this helps.

here's apisetup log sorry its so long

This is very curious (did I say that before?)...  The error(s) we are seeing in this log seems somehow to be related to the AOL browser (which I do not know at all).

I know you have mentioned before that you have uninstalled and reinstalled many times, but I would like to try one more time a clean uninstall and install of the FP ActiveX control:

  • download the FP uninstaller from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html (save to disk);
  • download this MSI installer http://www.adobe.com/go/full_flashplayer_win_msi (save to disk);
  • close all browser windows (also any messenger programs) and run the downloaded uninstaller;
  • restart windows;
  • temporarily disable your antivirus software;
  • with no browser windows or messengers running, run the downloaded MSI installer.  You should get the same install panel that you posted earlier; check the checkbox next to "I have read and agree..." the click the INSTALL button.

When the installation is complete, can you check file FlashInstall.log in the C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash folder?  Any errors in there?

I don't see any error(s), just and messages.  Which one do you see as an error?  To me it looks like a successful installation.

Does Flash Player work?

Do you still get these unwanted pop-ups?

I'm sorry Error was an incorrect word.I was referring to 0000 00000010 "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.513\FP_AX_CAB_INSTALLER.exe" /RegServer re the conflict message.

yes it works and yes the popups continue

This really seems to be specific to AOL; I found this other topic http://forums.adobe.com/message/2910121 (unresolved).

The question is: where does that pop-up come from - what triggers it?  Is it something that is issued during startup?

Can you check msconfig if there are any startup items that might indicate something Adobe or FP?

Also, are there any AOL forums that may address AOL browser / add-on issues?  (Where you could search for FP_AX_CAB_INSTALLER.exe)

OK ! using your thought "This really seems to be specific to AOL; , "  I uninstalled AOL completely, and installed a later version (ver 9.5). It appears that the problem is gone for now. I will let you know if it returns. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of your assistance.

Thank you again!

Hi Pat, even tho this screenshot is different, many users will receive the message from youtube and other sites to update Flash Player when they have already done so. But the Shockwave Flash Object is not Enabled or Installed. Perhaps it may be that. I didn't see that he could see the animation at the test site. Just a thot. I have not seen this very often, usually it is just the message.

Hi, thanks for confirming that. What is causing this is hard to tell. Pat has already went thru what it could be and so have you. Are you also receiving other pop ups, perhaps from AOL? Anti-Virus add ons can cause strange things to happen also. Some can conflict with the Shockwave Flash Object that is the Control for the Flash Player files, some conflict with the browser itself and others can conflict with each other.

What Anti-Virus program do you have Installed and did you turn off all of the components when you ran Malwarebytes?

If you didn't, then there could have been a conflict. Just asking about this, since I have seen these things happen before.

Just something else to check. Perhaps Pat will have another idea.

Thanks,

eidnolb

useing Trend Micro did not turn off for Malware scan will do so now. I'll run a full scan  takes 2 hours  so I'll check back in in the morning. Thanks, Bob

Hi, ok, probably a good idea, just another check. This site has some info on TM. You most likely know all of this, but thot I'd post it just in case. It seems Anti-Virus programs are always adding new components and I'm not that familiar with TM.

http://www.ehow.com/how_5772247_disable-trend-micro-antivirus-firewall.html

This site is interesting and not just limited to TM.

Thanks,

Hi, It seems AOL and the INSTALL FP POP-UP is my problem too. If I click anywhere on the AOL homepage at startup , the FP POP-UP goes away.

Ofcourse, with AOL it's just one or many annoying POP-UPS!  I would love to get rid of it anyway. There must be more AOL addicts infected by this carp? Good Luck!
