    Unable to remove keywords

    Grant D Taylor Community Member

I just started using bridge and I am having a problem with keywords returning after being removed and deleted. I had originally have a keyword called ohio inside of a places keyword. I decided that I wanted to list it as a keyword inside locations and the USA then Ohio. I created the new keyword and removed the other keyword from all of my files and deleted it. When I applied the new ohio keyword to my ohio photos the old keyword popped back up in italics for some of the photos. Deselecting either ohio now removes both ohios. I tried removing all uses of ohio and restarting the program since I had read that the italics are temporary keywords but as soon as I apply Ohio where I want it it pops back up where I deleted it.

I have no idea what to do to permanently remove it. I have only used Bridge CS5. Checking the file info just lists Location USA Ohio as words. I tried selecting ohio on all the images and then renaming the unwanted ohio but it just added a new keyword and the unwanted ohio stayed. I have tried clearing the cache and preferences and even reinstalled everything. I can not find any pattern to the ohio being retained. It is Raw, PSD and Jpeg images. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct in that a keyword in italics is temporary.  If you right clck on it and choose "make persistant" it will become permanent.

Your best bet to get rid of the old keyword you do not want to to do a search for it "right click and choose find".  Then uncheck that keyword from all the images.

          Then delete the old keyword.

          Hope that helps.

p.s. Start your search at the top of the directory as the search goes down from start point.

I tried doing that and it removed all of them but as soon as I select the the Ohio keyword I want to use under USA the one under Places comes right back in Italics. For now I have managed to work around it by using OHIO instead of Ohio but it is frustrating having one naming convention used through out the catalog except in one spot.

If it is in italics that means the next time you reload Bridge it

              will not be there.  Right??

When I restart bridge the keywords disappear from the keyword list but some files, when selected, make the keyword appear again in the list in italics.

It only happens with keywords that I have changed where in the nested heirarchy that the keyword location has changed. If I have the same keyword twice, selecting one should select the other on if I am right. Does Bridge store a list of all the keywords it has used? If so could it be using the ones I had removed earlier when I am selecting that new one. If so is there a way to just delete all the keywords from Bridge and reset it. I do not mind having to redo all of my keywords but just selecting all files and removing them results in the old words reappearing as soon as I put the same keyword in again.

I have never used the nested heirarchy, so that may be causing some of the problems, don't have any advice to deal with that.

If you do a search with the italiziced keyword do you get any hits?  Make sure all hits are unchecked for the keyword if you do.  If you do not get a hit that would mean it has something to do with the heirachy orgainztion.

Yes there is a keyword file.  It is in user/app data/roaming/adobe/bridge

                  Hope this helps.

Procedure for permanent deletion of a keyword:

The essential principle here is that keywords are tenacious: they must be eradicated from EACH FILE to which they are attached.  To eradicate a keyword from images in one folder is thus fairly simple.  But to eradicate them from many folders simultaneously requires that all the images from all the folders be displayed so they can all be selected simultaneously.

I recently accomplished this in a heirarchy of image bearing folders in the following way:

Workspace Panels used: Folders, Content, Keywords, Filter

In folders panel: select folder(s) containing problematic keywords

In Contents panels: View: Show Items from Subfolders

In Filter Panel/Keywords subpanel: click on  a problematic keyword

In Contents panel: Select files found (select all)

In Keywords panel, select the problematic keyword and uncheck it, then delete it

In Filter panel, click the keyword again (it should disappear)

                    Environment:  CS5, Mac OS 10.7

It is a little easier if you use search rather than filter, as then you can search across multiple folders.

Shortcut is to right click on keyword in panel and in flyout menu choose find.

Be sure to start on a directory high up and the search starts there and works down.
