gaiagraphics1 Aug 8, 2010 10:04 PM (in response to kevin.cecil)It's a bug in Distiller.
I entered the entire term in Google:
Error in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/PDFX4 2008.joboptions:
/CheckCompliance out of range
and found a forum with an excellent discussion:

Darn it. Three hours lost, a good part of it on Adobe.com looking for a Distiller update (none) or trial (not for Macs). Glad I didn't waste time trying to uninstall and reinstall Distiller, which apparently doesn't delete prefs and other system files.

kevin.cecil Aug 9, 2010 5:13 AM (in response to gaiagraphics1)From the looks of the thread, there has been some sort of bug with this since at least Feb 2009.
What is weird with mine is that it only happens if the .ps file is introduced to Distiller via Watched folder. If I drop it directly into Distiller, it works OK.

gaiagraphics1 Aug 9, 2010 5:19 AM (in response to kevin.cecil)For me, that error message showed up in Distiller when I opened the program, before I put anything into the In folder.
What worked for me was to remove the PDF Settings file "PDFX4 2008.joboptions". I didn't delete it, just tucked it into a folder inside the Adobe PDF folder.
