2. Re: Where do character animators hang out?
Bill Hunt Aug 4, 2010 8:42 AM (in response to Christopher Duncan)Not that long ago, I spotted a small herd of them at Joel Robuchon's, just out of Soho. I observed them from the chef's counter for quite awhile, and do not think that I was detected. I attempted to follow them, but lost them in the fog, about the time that they got to a mews in the West End.
Not sure where one would find them on-line, and it could well be that they are well-dispersed, in say the manga, anime, RPG/gothic/ethereal groups.
I will say that they are an elusive bunch, wear black, are usually seen in darkened neighborhoods (often semi-industrial areas) at night, and usually carry sketch pads and their portfolios.
Good luck in the quest. If I uncover any watering holes, I will share them here.

I think that is why I have been happily married for almost 40 years. I know that when I wake up the next morning, the lady will be even BETTER looking, than when I was under the influence.
Now, that has not stopped me from thinking that I was so much more charming, than when I was sober, but that is another story.

You wake up, hair dishevelled, tongue lolling from dehydration, one eye still half closed and look at your wife, who hopefully is STILL ASLEEP AND CANT SEE YOU

Bill Hunt Aug 4, 2010 7:21 PM (in response to able123)Rod,
Considering the years, she's seen me - oh, she's seen me!
I still cannot imagine how I ever convinced such an intelligent woman to marry me. Her family is still in shock, and it's been almost 40 years. Her family did a pool, and the longest duration chosen was 6 mos. I held that over much of the family, until they all died off.

11. Re: Where do character animators hang out?
Chuck A. McIntyre Aug 11, 2010 7:26 PM (in response to Christopher Duncan)Character animation is a fascinating mystery to me. It has always seemed like an insane amount of work for little return. I look at lifelike characters like Smeagol from Lord of the Rings and would love a chance to watch the creative process/workflow. For starters, I would like to know what 3d animation programs are considered top of the line for major film production. I believe that a version of Maya is frequently used. Isn’t Maya kind of a Swiss Army knife 3d program? I think some people use a version of it to render 3d commercial building prototypes.
I would love to animate a character I designed in 3d. It’s an odd looking critter everyone seems to get a kick out of. I even have a storyline for a 4 minute animation video. Where are all of the 3d animators hiding?

what does your character look like ? can you post pic ? what format is it ?

this place is good....
this is maya tutorial / info...but if you go back to "home" I think there's different program links
http://www.creativecrash.com/maya/tutorials
also: most of the software companies have online help and samples and tutorials.. like autodesk maya has that sort of stuff...
ps... maya is also good for "camera match move" stuff...whether greenscreen or not..

Bill Hunt Aug 12, 2010 8:46 AM (in response to able123)Rod,
After you do the 3D character animation, you might want to incorporate some live, stop-motion footage using this GUY. All sorts of possibilities, and the price is right - on SALE right now.
Good luck,
Hunt
PS - I could easily see RoboDog as the protagonist/hero in the piece.

I've been using Google Chrome, from the time that my IE 7 started having problems with the "camera" icon in this forum, and the forum started adding tons of line-breaks, wherever it wanted them.
Sorry that I cannot help you.

Christopher Duncan Aug 12, 2010 6:21 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)From animated characters to Campbell's Instant Snake (just add water) to Outlook Express... Man, I can't leave you guys alone for a minute, can I?
Rod, I run regular Outlook but not express, and I suspect that the UI is different since MS loves to move stuff around just for the sport of it. Much as I hate to admit it, Google is probably a more useful resource than I am on this one [hangs head in shame].

20. Re: Where do character animators hang out?
Bill Hunt Aug 12, 2010 6:50 PM (in response to Christopher Duncan)Chris,
Considering that C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien,Charles Williams and Hugo Dyson hung out at the Eagle and Child pub in Oxford, I would anticipate that some CGI folk might have taken up seats there, as well. Now, last time that I was there, I saw few others, though could feel the "ghosts in the room." I do have to admit that there were two younger folk, with sketch pads and Mac PB-Pros, so they may have been the "character animators?" They WERE dressed in black with little goatees, so that would point in the right direction.

Make sure to wear your Groucho glasses, nose and mustache, or they may spot you!!!! Also, wear nothing but black and maybe even a cape (lining can be red).
Travel safely, and remember that you know no one in the Video Lounge. We will all disavow any knowledge of you, or your mission.

33. Re: Where do character animators hang out?
able123 Aug 13, 2010 9:32 AM (in response to Christopher Duncan)HI,
No company..I'm a grip. Film crews. But I'm almost 60 and trying to get into something else as it's hard now for me to do that work. I don't "work out" and do things to keep in shape when I'm not "working on jobs"...So it beats me up a bit ( takes about 2 weeks on a job to get in shape ).
Plus, there's other issues re: my attitude, enthusiasm, etc.
If I had the money to get a system together I might be able to go around town and weasel a couple accounts doing dailies for some tv shows...as most stuff gets shipped overnight to CA ( hard drives, etc)..and that's the kind of stuff I would love to do..as I fell in love with this editing stuff about a year ago. I hope to retire in 5-6 years..but have to do SOMETHING in the meantime...or I'm a dead duck.
I'm thinking of using my annuity money to build an editing system, but to do that I have to retire from union..and then I'm limited how many days per quarter I can work on jobs. It's not easy trying to figure out what to do with the current economy etc. Then there's some stuff that might happen down in NC ...that might help.. new production company getting started ..I'm kinda just trying to stay busy on my own ...or hang out here and learn what I can while hoping for some things to break.

35. Re: Where do character animators hang out?
Christopher Duncan Aug 13, 2010 9:59 AM (in response to able123)Being a grip sounds way too much like working for a living to me.
Definitely time to find some work that doesn't involve sweating all day. Cool resume, though. Wish I was connected enough in the industry to be of use to you, but I'll certainly keep an ear out just the same.
I lived in Commack & Deer Park back in the early 80s and played all the big rock rooms on the island (Solomon Grundy's Clipper, Silver Dollar, et al). Stray Cats and Twisted Sister were playing a lot of the same rooms we were, but I never got to see them because we were usually working 6 nights a week. Still, hard to complain about steady work.
It's hard playing bars in the south (Atlanta) after being up there. You ask where the dressing room is and they point you to the bathroom. Or to the gas station across the street! What I miss the most, though are the NY women.

Oh boy, you can say THAT again...sheesh...
Wow...cool LI stuff....you about 55 now? I thought the women in Atlanta were sweet ? Never been there.
In early 80's my girlfriend of that time, Roxy, ( Ukranian ), bartended at CBGB. Some interesting stuff was happening there. Do you remember "The Sick F..k's ' ?? Two sisters that owned a bouique on ST Marks ? Used to dress up like Nuns and play " Ax Your Brother" ...stuff like that ? LOL....
Some Brit band came to NY and visited our apt and I went with the drummer to the local junkyard to find some cool percussion instruments ( pieces of iron, hubcaps, parts of machinary...) Weird times.

38. Re: Where do character animators hang out?
Christopher Duncan Aug 13, 2010 10:36 AM (in response to able123)Yep - 53 in a couple of months, and life is good. Turns out everything they told us about getting old was BS. I'm smarter, stronger, faster and better in every way than i was at 20. Getting old rocks.
We didn't play much in the city. There were a couple of gigs in some no-name bars in Queens but that was about it. I regret now that I didn't hit CBGBs back in the day. Went out to the Bottom Line a couple of times, and of course hit Ray's Pizza anytime we could.
And yeah, the Atlanta girls are hot, but there's something about the NY girls. Maybe I just like the accent because I grew up in the south. You know, Mona Lisa Vito.
