Encore CS5 DVD transcoding too large for dual layer

    h2ofun Community Member

Man, my second try at something with CS5, and does not seem to be working.

So, I have a project with a dynamic link to PPro for my timeline, and a bunch of slide shows.  I have transcoding set to Automatic, which is supposed to size the encoding so everything fits on my selected dual layer DVD disc.  I make the selection to image since I want to burn later.  So, it goes and does the encoding, then I get an error saying the file size is like 11.3 gig, and will not fit on the disc.  Dah.  But, with the automatic setting, it is supposed to scale the quality so it fits.  Never saw this issue with CS4.  Any thoughts.

      I am 0/2 so far.  (

With Automatic Transcoding, there will be a limit on the bit-rate, so as to keep quality acceptable. Going back a few versions, the error was to the effect, "the bit-rate will be below ___ to fit this material onto the disc chosen... "

Can you tell us about your Project, the Duration of the linked Sequence(s) in PrPro, the number and Duration of the SlideShows?

          Good luck,

Bill, this was a project I had from CS4 that worked fine.  I just am trying to add chapter playlists since it would make the menus work better.

The sequence is 1 hour 50 minutes.  Slide shows about 230, about 1 hour long.

I had tried making a BR in CS5 with the chapter playlists and find from responses it looks like this was broken in CS4, and is still broken in CS5.

So, I am now trying to see if it works in DV with CS5

Based on another post like my issue I found, I am going to try and clear the media cache, reset the transcoding and will try again.

There are some differences between the bit-rate for Quality, between CS3 - CS4 and CS5. The Bit-Rates were bumped up in CS5, to enhance quality. There is a recent thread, where the same thing happened to a user. The Project Burned in CS4, but failed in CS5. On further investigation, the Bit-Rates had gone up with the Presets. Could this be happening to you? Seems that Ann Bens pointed out the change there.

              Good luck,

The problem in the other thread was one in which the person had been making the same structure disk with a particular preset, but not using automatic.  And the "high quality" preset changed (basically the average bitrate increase was the issue - minimum and average increased).

I am still puzzled when the automatic setting does not work.  Generally, no clue in this thread's case, suspect an asset or two that was not transcoded, or part of the project is transcoded as "automatic," but then menus/motion menus are added or changed, and EN does not re-transcode unless told to.

So I agree with clearing cache/redoing.

                  Stanley,

Thank you for that clarification. Important aspect.

I have only had the "Quality would be too low for the disc type chosen," or similar syntax, in my errors with Automatic Transcode. Normally, En does a good job, but does have a "cut-off" lower Bit-Rate limit. Maybe things have changed in CS5?

Okay, let me give you a status of where I am at, and folks can tell me if this is a "feature" or bug(s).

When I started this project from scratch 9 months ago in CS4, I chose BR since my material is all HDV.  So did all my stuff in CS4 and worked fine, both BR and DVD.  (But to be honest, not sure if I hit the below issues)

Now, I pulled this same completed project into CS5, and was hoping to make my BR have Chapter playlists and pop up menus.  I went through the process and found the Chapter Playlists with BR still does not work, which means I could not check if the pop menu I made worked.  (Everything works fine in Encore preview!)

So I thought I would try to make a DVD output from this project to check the chapter playlist feature.  So, I changed the output to DVD, checked for no errors, and did a build.  When it was done, I tried to play it but the video was not transcoded for DVD, still had it for BR.  So, it was not made correctly.  When I looked at the timeline, it showed the BR transcoded, but the DVD untranscoded.  Why would it make a DVD and use the BR video?  This seems like a bug.

I then reset the timeline, and started it up again.  This time after it did the transcoding, it told me the output was 11.3 gig, and too large to fit on a disc.  This is when I posted this question.

So, I continued to play around some more, since it made no sense when I reset the timeline, had the output on DVD settings (Automatic), and it showed space as needed like 11 gig.  This was impossible.  So, I went into the project settings, and changed the type from BR to DVD.  Guess what, the size then went down to 8.3 gig or so.  I just did the build and it worked, including the chapter playlist.

So, sure seems like there are a number of bugs in CS5.

1). Why when DVD was selected, it did not transcode for DVD?

2). Why when I reset the transcoding, it showed the output at 11 gig for DVD?

3).  Why did I have to go back into the basic project setting, which are input, and change from BR to DVD to get the darn program to work correctly?

4). When is the bug for BR Chapter Playlists going to be fixed?

No way would the average person figure this out.

So, have I found some bugs, or "features"?
