Jeff Bellune Aug 18, 2010 8:36 AM (in response to h2ofun)- What was the target of your button link?
- What was the end action of that target?
- What was the target of your override?

2. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
Alan Craven Aug 18, 2010 8:49 AM (in response to h2ofun)This is the method I have used to enable the playing of individual chapters in Blu-ray discs with Encore (CS4 or CS5). Make the end action of each chapter "move to next chapter".
The main menu has "Play All" linked to the timeline, and "Play Chapter" linked to the sub-menu. The sub-menu has a button for each chapter, linked to the appropriate chapter, and a button to return to the main menu.
I then use an over-ride on the sub-menu button for each chapter to make the end action "Return to last Menu".
The alternative is to make each chapter a separate timeline, and then use a playlist (which is not the same as a chapter playlist, and is supported in Encore) to play the chapters in sequence. Each chapter button is linked to the appropriate timeline, with the end action return to last menu.
Either will work, but as I have noted previously, the move from chapter to chapter when you "play all" is clunky.

3. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
Stan Jones Aug 18, 2010 12:12 PM (in response to Alan Craven)Jeff may have the answer, but I'll just say I prefer testing in a new project with a simplified structure - one menu, one short timeline with 3 chapters, and two buttons - one the play all timeline button; the other, a chapter button going to chapter two and the button with the override you describe.
On the other hand, I'm not sure what other option to test that makes doing such a test worthwhile now. But perhaps if more testing is done....

4. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
h2ofun Aug 18, 2010 12:25 PM (in response to Stan Jones)Stan, normally I would agree. But in my case, I have a whole bunch of complete SD and BR projects I did with CS4. I save all the stuff on hard drives
so now I wanted to take advantage of some never features I just learned about for CS5. The chapter playlist was something that would really help my menu flow, so I was willing to redue all these projects in CS5 to get that single feature. I also wanted to add the pop menu for the BR projects since that would be cool. So, when I had a working project from CS4, I just assumed using the same project in CS5 encore would be simply. (
I do not mind debugging, since I did this for years as an engineer, but, some of this stuff seems pretty simple that I am running against, so it is a little frustrating.
Oh well, I am going to do the effort to take my project back to BR, remove the chapter playlist stuff, and see if I can make the override work. If not, I will post what is going on and ask for help. I just hope some of this is operator error, rather than the program just does not work on what seems to be simple stuff. Oh well, welcome to software

5. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
Stan Jones Aug 18, 2010 1:29 PM (in response to h2ofun)I agree with your goal, and I'm not saying I wouldn't jump in also. But given there's an issue, I'd use some simple projects to add confidence that the feature works/I'm doing it right.
Good luck!

6. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
h2ofun Aug 18, 2010 1:43 PM (in response to Stan Jones)That is what I am trying to do. Whether I have a timeline of 20 chapter points or 1, Chapter playlist on BD do not work. I am going to redue my project trying the override now. I am just playing with this one project. Until I get it to work, I am leaving all the others alone

7. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
h2ofun Aug 18, 2010 4:36 PM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Okay, since I cannot find the needed documentation, and what I am trying does not seem to work, going to ask for help again.
I am trying this with a DVD first, since I assume all functions work. So, I have a 2 hour timeline, with 19 chapter points. I have never done anything with the chapter points, but I see there are options.
Everything was started with the defaults encore used, which was not set.
So, I have a menu with 12 buttons. The first button is a play all, so I set it to chapter 1. Nothing set on chapters, I hit play all, and it plays all the timeline though all the chapter points. The end action for the timeline is back to the main menu which it does.
I the click on my next button in my main menu. I set the link for the button to chapter 2. So, if I hit this button, it starts at Chapter 2, and plays the rest of the timeline, where when done, goes back to the main menu. But, what I want is after it plays chapter 2 segment, if started from the non play all button, I want it to go back to the main menu.
So I see the button also an override. I thought that got enabled if I hit the button, but it seems that this is would only be executed instead of the end action for this process, which since is one timeline, it does not stop after chapter 2, it just plays the rest. So, I assume this override button has no value unless you are working with seperate timelines.
So, I now click on chapter 2 and I see it has an end action and override. So, on a chapter, what exactly does the end action setting do? Is the end action set by default right before the next chapter point? If not, I have no idea what this would do. So, if I assume the end action of a chapter is when it hits the next chapter market on the timeline, the default being set to not set, it just keeps playing. For the heck of it, I set the end action to be the next chapter. But, after the chapter is played, if it started with a menu button and not play all, I want it to not play the rest of the timeline, but go back to the main menu. So, for the override, I put in the main main. But, when I preview starting from this second button, it just keeps playing.
So, all I want to do is if I select a button from my menu, that starts at a chapter point, at the end of that chapter point segment I want to go back to the main menu. I want to do this in both SD and BR from my projects. The chapter playlist is what I want, but it does not work with BR. I do not want to have to go back and restart all my projects making a timeline for each chapter segment.
So, am I close?
Thanks

8. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
Alan Craven Aug 19, 2010 12:40 AM (in response to h2ofun)My post 2 in this thread tells you how to do this. In your present position with your project, the first method I describe would be the easier.
I will spell it out in more detail, at the expense of a very long post.
TIMELINE WITH PLAY ALL
Mark your chapter points and set the End Action for each chapter to be play the next chapter, e.g. Set Chapter 1 end-action to be "Timeline:Chapter 2", and so on for the rest of your chapters. Leave the Over-ride for all chapters at "Not Set". Set the End Action for the timeline to "Return to Last Menu".
Link the Play All button to the start of this timeline, as usual.
This will play the entire timeline, but the move from chapter to chapter will probably be rather clunky: at least it is on my Blu-ray machine, which is actually a Panasonic Blu-ray recorder.
PLAY INDIVIDUAL CHAPTERS STOPPING AT THE END OF THAT CHAPTER
Link the menu button for each chapter to the appropriate chapter in the timeline. Set the over-ride for each button to "Return to last Menu". E.g. To play Chapter 2 and stop at the end of that chapter, link the Chapter 2 menu button to Chapter 2 of the timeline, set the over-ride for that button to "Return to Last Menu".
This will play just the selected chapter, and at the end of that chapter you will return to the menu.
I insert chapter point before the closing credits in the timeline. There is no chapter button, link, or end-action to this closing credits chapter. This avoids the Check Project coming up with an error for the double end action at the end of the timeline - there is one for the whole timeline, and if the end of the timeline is played as a separate chapter, there would be a second identical end-action there. I am not sure that this is really necessary, as the disc seems to play OK if the double end-action warning is ignored.
I actually do this with a main menu with two buttons, "Play All" for the entire timeline and "Play Chapters" to move to a sub-menu with a button for each chapter, and a button to return to the main menu.
I also have a short black video between each chapter, which seems to make the move from chapter to chapter smoother when the entire timeline is played, and gives a smooth start and finish to each played chapter.

9. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
h2ofun Aug 19, 2010 5:05 AM (in response to Alan Craven)Alan, thanks, but I have tried what you have written and it did not work, as I tried to explain.
So, lets just focus on the one aspect of chapter markers.
I have taken a menu button and linked to the chapter I want to play. I then set the override on this button to main menu. But, it does NOT do the override, it just keeps playing to the end.
So, this is why I started the thread since the override does not seem to work for me. And at the moment, I am trying it as a DVD project, thinking it might have been less buggy.
Starting to wonder if just making a bunch of timelines might give me more flexibility, and a better workflow to standards. Is the Industry standard to do seperate timelines rather than using chapter points?

Did you set an end action for the chapter marker? That's required for the override to work.

12. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
h2ofun Aug 19, 2010 6:30 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Jeff and Stan, I thought I had written clearly that I have tried, multiple times, all the steps from are suggesting, and it does not work.
So I just verified again.
I have a button with a link to chapter 3. This button has no override set
On chapter 3, I have the end action to play chapter 4. The override on chapter 3 is to go back to the main menu. The timeline as already been transcoded from the past.
I then do preview.
When I click the button 3 from the main menu, it starts playing chapter 3. At the end of chapter 3, when it hits chapter 4, it just keeps playing, it does NOT stop and go back to the main menu.
So, have I tried what I have been told to do? I think I have, but maybe I still am making a mistake.
Thanks again for the help!!

Set the override for the button link, *not* for the chapter marker.

14. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
h2ofun Aug 19, 2010 8:22 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)Okay, I need to do the entire project, but never would have guess this in a 1000 years, and I sure never could find any documentation, or any training on how do to do this.
So, I set both the button, and chapter marker overrides to the menu, and it worked. Any idea from the logic why both have to be set to work?
Thanks for working with me. No where in a response did I read both places at once had to be set, but my eyes are getting bad.
Once I do this for the entire DVD project, and it works, I will then re encode to BR and see if it works, which I think I have heard it will?
Or did I read that wrong also?
Thanks again

15. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
Jeff Bellune Aug 19, 2010 10:19 AM (in response to h2ofun)Do not set the override for the chapter marker. You may end up with weird navigation issues in your current project, and if you set both overrides in future projects you definitely will, sooner or later, experience messed-up navigation.
An object's override alters the end action of the object's own end action. This is a difficult concept to get your head around, and you must think like a computer and not an artist to suss what happens when multiple overrides are chained together. Nine times out of ten, the resulting navigational mush is not what was desired to begin with.

16. Re: CS5 BR Button override, does it work?
h2ofun Aug 19, 2010 11:17 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)What I am going to try is the suggestion made to fix this the best. I have just started to chop my original single PPro timeline into seperate sequences which were each chapter. I have then gone back into encore and have done a dynamic link for each sequence. Am making playlists for each button which contains a single sequence, which used to be my chapters. Seems in the end, this work flow will keep me nice and simple and to standards.
Plus, easy to understand. So, would you agree this is the bottom line best way to fix my issue since chapter playlists for BR do not work with Encore CS5..
Thanks again folk for all the help. Sure learning a lot from this round or editting. Will go back and redue about 10 years of family christmas HD videos I did.
