1. Re: InDesign to PDF to Quark - Can't get bleed working.
[Jongware] Aug 19, 2010 5:17 AM (in response to Harpua42)This really, really, really sounds like a Quark problem.
Humour me: place the PDF into InDesign, and make sure you use "Show Options". You can choose whether to use the Bounding Box (which, it seems, can be calculated automatically by InDesign), or Art, Crop, Trim, Bleed, or Media boxes. Try Bleed, and check if it's correct.
Does Quark offer you a similar choice? If so, choose something else from that. If not, it seems Q Cant Do the Things ID Can Do.

BenCloutier Aug 19, 2010 6:03 AM (in response to [Jongware])And if Quark can't do better, you can export into another format. I don't know if other format that PDF let you include crop marks and all but if not, export from Acrobat to tiff.
Quark have real die hard fans that still uses this software after all that they've done (or should i say have NOT done)!

3. Re: InDesign to PDF to Quark - Can't get bleed working.
Harpua42 Aug 19, 2010 6:17 AM (in response to [Jongware])Yes, the PDF places with bleed and crops into InDesign. I figured it would. I havent had this problem before. It USED to work... but I haven't tried since Quark 7 maybe. I assumed it was some weird setting when exporting the PDF.

4. Re: InDesign to PDF to Quark - Can't get bleed working.
P Spier Aug 19, 2010 6:18 AM (in response to Harpua42)Another possibility would be to place the PDF (or the ID page or original art) into a larger ID page and export that.

5. Re: InDesign to PDF to Quark - Can't get bleed working.
Harpua42 Aug 19, 2010 6:59 AM (in response to P Spier)Hmmm.. At that point, I might as well open the PDF in Photoshop and save as a jpg. You think ID holds all that info after that kind of nesting?

6. Re: InDesign to PDF to Quark - Can't get bleed working.
BobLevine Aug 19, 2010 7:01 AM (in response to Harpua42)You nest it as many times as you want in ID.

Harpua42 Aug 19, 2010 7:19 AM (in response to MT.Freelance)That was one of the first things I tried, no luck. Thanks though!

10. Re: InDesign to PDF to Quark - Can't get bleed working.
macinbytes Aug 19, 2010 7:34 AM (in response to Harpua42)If you are exporting the pdf with bleed from InDesign you want to make sure to use the "Bleedbox" option on the pdf import. It's virtually the same in Quark 7 as it is in InDesign.
With Quark and InDesign I like to make the analogy that Quark is a Rocket Sled and InDesign is a Cadillac. What you lose in Quark in stability is made up in speed. Quark 8 runs fast on an 8 year old G4 where InDesign can be sluggish on my 6 month old overspecced Xeon.

Harpua42 Aug 19, 2010 7:39 AM (in response to macinbytes)WINNER!! Nice, thanks so much... totally worked. Thought this was the first time Quark let me down!

Eugene Tyson Aug 19, 2010 7:45 AM (in response to Harpua42)I only have on suggestion, and Bob might make me sit in the corner again - but I'd save the PDF as an EPS and place that in Quark.

13. Re: InDesign to PDF to Quark - Can't get bleed working.
BobLevine Aug 19, 2010 7:48 AM (in response to Eugene Tyson)Actually, you can stay out the corner. AFAIK, and this may no longer be true, but Quark converts PDFs to EPS internally so you might just as well go that route to begin with.
Perhaps Dov will pop in and give us a bit more later versions of Quark.

14. Re: InDesign to PDF to Quark - Can't get bleed working.
macinbytes Aug 19, 2010 7:54 AM (in response to Harpua42)Yeah you have to import the image again in order to get the bleed to show. InDesign (to my knowledge) also requires you to relink the image with a different setting in the event you don't place the file with bleed.
Quark's PDF import is handled through the "PDF Filter.xnt" which hasn't always been great. It was pretty bad in 6, better in 6.5, nice in 7, improved again in 7.4. Make sure that you are using version 7.5 of Quark unless you have a compatibility issue that requires you to be running concurrently version 6.51 (several 6.51 extensions broke in 6.52)

Quark 8 is actually pretty nice. Some of the guys in the shop are using it and it is really improved. It's got some of the new stuff that it had to do in order to keep relevant, but adds a lot of really good basic working items. Object selection, rotation and manipulation is really improved. If one were to measure how far a leap backwards InDesign made in CS5 from CS4 in regards to frame edge highlighting, content grabber and corner rounding you could say that Quark from 7 to 8 moved twice as far forward. Quark 8 is really a Quark man's Quark whereas InDesign 5 seems to be aimed at pleasing the candystriper's needs.

macinbytes Aug 19, 2010 8:42 AM (in response to BobLevine)The resident Bob of the Quark forums agrees that you should convert to EPS prior to placement in Quark when possible.
