1. Re: File import questions and folder display questions
Jasonized Aug 19, 2010 11:45 AM (in response to DVDmike)I have a hard drive assigned to drive letter "B:\" Why doesn't the file imported see this drive in the list of drives? I have to use the "other drives" and browse every time that I want to add files from this disk. Other drives, including networked drives are fine.
My first guess there is B: is reserved for floppies, as in 2nd floppy (A: is first), so maybe the software by default doesn't look that low? Try re-assigning it somewhat higher (H:? W?) and see if there is a difference.
When importing from a main folder and including subfolders, is there a way to filter files in any manner? I never want to import web galleries that I have made in bridge, for example.
Not to my knowledge... Of course, others have far greater knowledge, but I have seen simliar questions with a negative answer in the past.
In the library view of folders, how I filter on all files in one disk? I can select a folder under the disk and see just that folder, but LR will not allow me to select the entire disk. Is there a way to do this?
Are you talking about "all files" as in, you select C: to look at all images? No, you can't do that, because all images are not imported into your catalog. The library grid only shows you the images you have imported. Or am I misunderstanding you? If you want to look at all images in your catalog, just select the top level folder (not the disk icon) and make sure you have "show subfolders" checked, and it will show you everything in the catalog. And allow filtering.
In the library module, how can I filter on file dimensions? I thought that I had seen this, but I can no longer find this. Sorting by file dimensions would also be an option to accomplish what I am trying to do. I need to delete all thumbnail images and tiny images from the catalog. Is there an easy way to do this?
I think you will need a plugin module for that.. Hmm.. I remember someone posting something about it, probably Rob Cole, but not sure. You might search the forum for filter plugin.
Cheers!

2. Re: File import questions and folder display questions
DVDmike Aug 19, 2010 12:37 PM (in response to Jasonized)Thanks.
When I was talking about one disk, I meant one disk that has already been imported into lightroom and is visible in the folder view of the library view. You apparently cannot select the disk name like you can a folder under the disk to see all images in the disk.
Its a shame that V3 of LR cannot do the same filtering that bridge can do. Bridge is a hog and does not use the same type of database to store information like this that LR does. The LR database should make filtering on any number of options easy as pie and relatively fast. It just needs to be implemented. It is really surprising that it is not. I really thought that I must be missing something.
In the past, I was creating a new LR catalog for each shoot. Now, I am in the process of combining catalogs and importing old images to have an easy way of finding and organizing all images. It would appear that LR is not really as great at this than I thought it was before I began this process.

No, because you don't import a whole disk, you only import images. And the toplevel disk bar you see there is the disk where the top level folder is stored, not the entire disk.
Bridge and LR are two very different things... If bridge meets your needs for whatever work flow you are doing, then that's good.
LR does do filtering, fast, easy and capable of very complex filters. But only on images you have imported.
I have combined my catalogs from different shoots as well. It's easy, makes filtering across all of the collections easy, and works well. I suspect you just don't quite understand what it is that LR is doing (or can do) for you, in regards to what a catalog actually is, or how it can enhance your workflow.
For LR to be helpful, you need to look at your workflow, and figure out what you need to do. For most people, this means importing images into the catalog with some type of structure, such as date driven folders. For example, my folder structure is now: Project->year->year-mon->year-mon-day.
I then go through and rate them all, then I use collections (both smart and standard) to organize my important images.
Cheers!

DVDmike Aug 19, 2010 1:33 PM (in response to Jasonized)No, because you don't import a whole disk, you only import images. And the toplevel disk bar you see there is the disk where the top level folder is stored, not the entire disk.
Let me make this clear. When I want to view an entire disk, I am only wanting to select images that I have already imported, not the entire disk including images that I have NOT imported.
I am not sure if you dont understand what I am saying or what. If you have folders of images inside a top level folder, you can easily select the top folder to see all subfolders that you have imported. Why can't I select the disk as the top level folder to see all of the images that I have imported on that disk?
I have a cattelog that has images from 8 different disks. I use removable drive bays so all 8 disks are not available at any given time. I just want the ability to select all images that I have imported on a disk, just like you can do at the folder level. I am at a loss as to why this is a problem.
My point about bridge was that LR is a far superior program for organizing images due to its database. But LR is lacking in some features that could have easily been put into it. If bridge can do the type of filtering that it does without a good database engine, then certainly LR could and should do it. In no way do I want to use Bridge to manage cattelogs with 150,000 images. That would be insane. I have no issue with the fact that you have to import your images first to use LR. It has to be this way to work with the database. My issue is that the filtering is not nearly as comprehensive as bridge.
I dont need help with my workflow. Back when I shot many of the images that I am importing now into LR, there was no lightroom. My workflow was much different back then than it is now. My comments were that I assumed that LR could do things that it cannot, not that I needed help with my current workflow. Much of the issues that I have now with LR are due to the old workflow and trying to import only the raw images.

Dorin Nicolaescu-Musteață Aug 20, 2010 2:21 AM (in response to DVDmike)2. When importing from a main folder and including subfolders, is there a way to filter files in any manner?
You can uncheck the checkmarks next to folders in the Destination panel on the right hand side of the Import dialog.
3. When importing from a main folder and including subfolders, is there a way to filter files in any manner?
You cannot select the disk, but you can select "All photographs" at the top of the left panel. You can also shift-click all top-level folders under a volume to select them all.
4. How can I display the entire folder structure in the laibrary panel? Some folders are not showing their top level folders that they are inside of. How do I reveal this information?
Right click the folder that is currently top-level in your folder panel and select "Add Parent" until you're satisfied with the hierarchy. When you reach the parent level you want, you can click the parent folder to select you all files from a certain drive, as you requested in question #3.
