New lens profiles only for RAW???

    jacksdecoy

Why is it that I can only use the new Nikon lens profiles for raw?  That is misleading.  Your update notes state all those new profiles.

Lightroom is primarily a raw workflow tool, and the lens profiling is courtesy Adobe Camera Raw, so it would not surprise me.

But a quick test with JPEGs directly from a point-and-shoot shows that you can apply arbitrary lens profiles all you like.

The problem is, the in-camera processing done on JPEGs can substantially alter the nature of the *needed* profile.  For example, many camera can now do internal vignetting correction and some even do internal CA correction.  But they can be turned on and off.  How should a *lens* profile handle that?  Make a separate one for every possible camera that might use that lens and every possible combination of settings the user might select on each of those cameras?

            It's a big problem for non-raw profiles.

That said, I've previously posted how to convert raw profiles so they'll work, at least so some extent, on JPEGs.

I understand what you are saying.  I know my body does not correct distortion so I should be able to use it for that.  The profiles in LR 3.2 are not available in the drop down list when I am editing JPGs.  How can I convert them or enable them?

Odd. Works for me if I enable corrections.  I can force all sorts of nonsense corrections on a JPEG that has no raw counterpart anywhere. Does the process version come into play for non-raw images?

I'm not sure you are getting the question I am asking.

I use lens profiles as of Lightroom 3.  I even made one of my own because Adobe didn't release one for my lens (Nikkor 16-85) but now that Adobe has released one, I'd like to use it instead.  Sure, I can enable corrections in 3.2.  But the only profiles available to me are then ones that came with LR3.0.  I am certain I am running the latest release of 3.2.  When I load up an NEF however, the corrections thing correctly identifies my lens and applies the correction.  When I load up a JPG, the same thing doesn't happen, it says it could not automatically locate a matching profile.  Even if I try to manually choose a profile, the lens profile just doesn't show up in the list like it does for NEFs.  So I am complaining that if they made them for JPGs for some lenses in LR3.0, why didn't they make them for JPGs in LR3.2?

You'll have to copy them to a new filename (I replace "raw" with "non-raw") and then edit all the tags in the file that look like this:

                    <stCamera:CameraRawProfile>True</stCamera:CameraRawProfile>

Change them all to False, and they'll work, albeit in a somewhat degraded fashion, on JPEGs.

I don't even know where they are stored on my mac.  When I look where I put the one I made, that's the only one there.  Can you point me to the location of the built-in lens profiles on a mac?

Nope...I only know where they are on PCs.

It turns out that it says in the ALPC user guide:

                          /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/LensProfiles/1.0

Thanks Lee.  Unfortunately, that is where you store your self created ones.  Not the built-in ones.  I saved the one I created in there, but that's the only thing there.

According to the manual, that's where they are.  I don't have access to a mac anywhere to check myself.  The location for user-generated profiles is simi

lar but with your username and users up front.

So, you want new lens profiles without installing 3.2, or you want to download them from some place and install them yourself? I didn't really get that from your description.

You should never put user stuff in /Library. Maybe you assumed ~/Library?  However, the default profiles are all in there:

Jay!  Thank you so much!  I did have 3.2 installed and I was able to convert them.  I was looking in the user/ directory instead of the root. I find it a little weird that Adobe only made raw versions for the new profiles while they made both raw and non-raw ones with the original profiles.
