1. Re: Tired of constantly synchronizing folders :(
dj_paige Sep 14, 2010 3:14 PM (in response to deedeecz)Lightroom is not a file/folder browser, and it does not know (and was designed this way) when you move photos and folders outside of Lightroom.
There are several ways to avoid these issues.
1) Move/rename/delete files and folders inside of Lightroom
2) Develop a workflow and organization scheme that doesn't depend on folder location/name, and doesn't depend on moving files from here to there.
Constantly synchronizing isn't a good idea in Lightroom. -

99jon Sep 14, 2010 3:25 PM (in response to deedeecz)Lightroom does not contain any images. It only contains links to your images.
You should never need to synchronize unless you perform tasks behind Lightroom’s back.

4. Re: Tired of constantly synchronizing folders :(
deedeecz Sep 14, 2010 3:33 PM (in response to 99jon)Well, I prefere Bridge for browsing and viewing files. And what I like about Bridge is that I can get a full screen view with a single stroke of space bar. One should think that Lr and Br should be able to communicate changes; If Bridge can read adjustments made to RAW files in LR then, maybe LR should be able to see if I moved something in Br.

99jon Sep 14, 2010 3:54 PM (in response to deedeecz)Try this guide for students, educators and photographers.
It’s fully adaptable, although written before 3.2.

I use method 2, where I have a workflow that doesn't require you to move files/folders from here to there. My photos come out of the camera and go into a folder named for the capture date, and they never move again (exception: when I need to move photos to a new hard disk). I make heavy use of keywords and other metadata in Lightroom to help me find my photos when I need them, to the point where I don't even know (and don't even care) what folders they are in.
I wrote more about this here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2999782#2999782

While some folks might need a much more complicated set-up, what you describe here should satisfy the majority of users.

10. Re: Tired of constantly synchronizing folders :(
deedeecz Sep 14, 2010 11:58 PM (in response to dj_paige)It seems more logical and efficient your way. As far as moving the LR catalog to a new machine is concerned, in the LR folder there are 5 other(system?) files besides LR3 catalog/prevews folder. Should I move them as well?

11. Re: Tired of constantly synchronizing folders :(
john beardsworth Sep 15, 2010 12:19 AM (in response to deedeecz)You only need to move the lrcat file and the previews folder. Make sure LR is closed before you move these.

12. Re: Tired of constantly synchronizing folders :(
deedeecz Sep 15, 2010 12:24 AM (in response to john beardsworth)OK, I'll disregard the lrcat.lock and lrcat.journal files

13. Re: Tired of constantly synchronizing folders :(
clvrmnky Sep 15, 2010 5:11 AM (in response to deedeecz)If Lr is shut down, there shouldn't be any .lock or .journal files. They can be left behind after a crash, I suppose, but you want to make sure all instances of Lr are not running before moving anything if these two files are still there.
