2. Re: ddr 3 memory required
Studio North Films Jun 5, 2010 2:33 PM (in response to Harm Millaard)I am looking at these kits Corsair
it would be 2x kits
or the 24gb kingston hyper X KHX1600C9D3K6/24GX this is CL9 would this matter ???
at the moment i have OCZ3G1866LV6GK OCZ 1866 10-10-10-28, but in CPU-Z it says 8-8-8-24
I dont know if i would be waisting money on better memory, or if I really need the 24gb Ram.

Harm Millaard Jun 5, 2010 2:38 PM (in response to Studio North Films)Baz,
There comes a moment when you can still eke out the last drop of performance, but at a heavy cost. I would leave it at where you are, at least for the next 6 months. You have great memory and if there is any improvement at all, it will be negligeable.

6. Re: ddr 3 memory required
Harm Millaard Jun 5, 2010 3:15 PM (in response to Studio North Films)Baz,
My system is more than one year old and it would be nice if I could update it the latest technology:
1. Exchange my i7-920 C0/1 stepping to an i7-980X hexa core
2. Exchange my CPU cooler to a Noctua NH-D14
3. Upgrade my memory to 24 GB DDR3 1600+
4. Upgrade my disks to F3's instead of the current F1's
5. Exchange my ARC 1680-iX-12 to the 1880iX-16 model
6. Upgrade to 4 GB cache on the ARC
This would ensure that I remain in the lead in several benchmarks, but at what cost and what would it bring me in editing?
Looking at the 6 points above, it would cost more than many would spend on a whole new system. Rough calculation: € 4,500.
Sometimes you have to be content with what you have and accept that there are always faster, better systems. That's life.

I would have to install i smaller fan on the end of the cooler to use the tall memory.
I have decided to stick with what i have for moment, and wait and see what happens with 24gb kits.

Had a quick look on Asus Support site, There memory list is old, and goes back 6 months.
I will have to email them when and if i decide to upgrade.

timthompsonguitar Sep 14, 2010 8:12 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)Harm:
I've been following some of your posts. I have three slots left in my computer to add memory:
My system:
i7 920
6 gigs currently
Windows 7 Pro
Premier Pro CS4
3 hard
drives, 2 on raid 0
I am in the process of editing a 90 minute concert with 4 cameras continuous video on 4 video tracks, HD, Wide Screen, P2 files. I am getting jittery
results in my multi-camera mode.
Any thoughts on how I could optimize?
Would more memory make a big difference?
What type of DDr3 would you recommend?
Thanks
Tim

12. Re: ddr 3 memory required
Studio North Films Sep 14, 2010 8:24 AM (in response to timthompsonguitar)with memory i would recomend all sticks to be of the same spec and same manufacture, and if you can a hex kit. more memory will help with certain things.

13. Re: ddr 3 memory required
timthompsonguitar Sep 15, 2010 6:40 AM (in response to Studio North Films)I just ordered this:
I looked at what Baz has and now I'm wondering if I should have gotten something a little more stout. It's expensive though. I have 6 gigs of A-Data 1333. I'm editing a project right now, 4 cameras, hd, widescreen, p2 files continuous video on CS5. The memory I have doesn't seem to handle it. Do you think I'm skimping with this new memory. They have this for $70 more:
G.SKILL Trident+ Turbulence II 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model F3-16000CL9T-12GBTDDBUT, I'm wondering about overheating. Should I be concerned.
My motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2

timthompsonguitar Sep 15, 2010 6:49 AM (in response to timthompsonguitar)Well, I should have checked g.skill website before I posted. The have ddr3-2000 available but only in 1 gb sticks. I thought I'd do 4 gig sticks for now and upgrade to 24 later.
Thoughts?
Thanks

Bill Gehrke Sep 15, 2010 6:56 AM (in response to timthompsonguitar)If you are encoding MPEG look at this plot of MPEG2-DVD encoding versus clock speed and RAM memory from our PPBM5 testing. I cannot say that this perormance increase applies to your situation as we have not tested your rather non-standard format. I will comment that this seems to be MPEG specific.

the second g.skill memory you had a link to is the 2000 mhz, it s pc-1600 = 2000mhz
If it was me i would go for the faster memory, just make sure it will be campatible.

FelixUnderwood Sep 18, 2010 9:16 PM (in response to Studio North Films)I was talking to Eric at TDK about the following memory and he said, "I'd order that pretty quickly before they run out of stock." I ordered late this afternoon and when I went back to post the link I found that I may have gotten the last two sticks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226157&cm_re=mushkin_ddr3_2000-_- 20-226-157-_-Product

are you refering to the price, as that is a aprox price for 3x4gb.
Baz

25. Re: ddr 3 memory required
FelixUnderwood Sep 19, 2010 7:47 AM (in response to Studio North Films)Yes, I am referring to the price, when you consider this is DDR3 2000. Notice one of the two other DDR3 2000 sets are similar in price but also out of stock. Then there's the primo $1,500 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231390&cm_re=ddr3_2000_ram-_-20-2 31-390-_-Product. Actually the RAM I bought is DDR3 2000, but with a CAS latency of 10. The ram listed in the link above is CAS 8, Then GSkill has CAS 9 for $1300. I may have to start my own post on this. BAZ, or anyone, for that matter, have thoughts on the performance increase vs. price?
Mushkin CAS 10 DDR3 2000: approx. $1,000
GSkill CAS 9 DDR3 2000: approx. $1,300
GSkill CAS 8 DDR3 2000: approx. $1,500

you are comparing your item against a hex kit, thats cost more.
prices for non hex kits, 2x 12gb kits. as the kits you ordered
G.skill CAS 9 $1058
G.skill CAS 8 $1200

What's the difference?
-
28. Re: ddr 3 memory required
Studio North Films Sep 19, 2010 10:44 AM (in response to FelixUnderwood)felix
A Hex kit is usally made on the same production line and usually on the same date, same batch.
If buying 2x kits to make 1x full kit, they could be made on different batches and sometimes dont work well with each other.
Hex kits usually cost alot more for this reason.
all i am trying to say is that the memory you bought is priced similar to other brands with similar spec, so there was not mutch saving there.
prices are dropping all the time.
