How do I refresh Absolute URL Images?

    djlurch123 Community Member

I am using Dreamweaver 11.0 / CS5 on a 64 bit Windows 7 PC. All the latest patches/updates have been installed.

In split view I am editing a web page that contains the following: <img src=http://www.mysite.com/images/logo.jpg>.  I am editing and uploading the images outside of DW in an FTP Program. The problem is that I can't get the image file to reload unless I restart DW.

Clicking on Refresh or F5 SHOULD reload the preview window, but it doesn't.

Please help! This is a MAJOR deal for me. I am new to DW (came over from FrontPage) and I use this functionality on a daily basis.

PS: I've searched high and low and run across others with similar complaints. See the following:

What happens when you use live view?

I did not know about "Live View" as I am new to DW. Thank you for the suggestion.

Indeed, the image does seem to refresh in the Live View mode.

However, in the Design Mode the image refuses to refresh even if I toggle between Live Mode and Design Mode.

Are you able to reproduce this? How does Adobe handle issues like this, which I consider a bug.

            Thanks!

Try going to 'View -> Refresh Design View' in the menu across the top. I know the keyboard shortcut is F5 but that doesn't seem to work all the time for some reason, yet actually selecting it from the menu seems to work.

I know this is an ancient thread, but it's also an unfixed issue. For those of us who work on rich email messages for corporate clients, this issue is a real PitA.

If I update an image and upload it, DW's Design View never ever refreshes -- not for love or money. Live View does refresh, but once I switch back  (so I can work on the HTML rather than simply admire my beautiful handiwork) Design View stubbornly refuses to refresh the image.

F5 won't do it. View > Refresh Design View won't do it. Screaming at my computer won't do it. And I've tried all three methods many times.

Is this an issue that's fixed in DW 5.5?

Does clearing the site cache refresh it? I know it's not a great solution, but better than nothing.

I haven't tried clearing the site cache, but restarting DW refreshes it. Also not a great solution!

Ancient, yet persistent! I have this issue in CS6 and it annoys me to no end. Any way to fix in design view besides restarting?

If I forget to upload the images to the server first, then I lose any preview, it's all broken images. If I have the images uploaded, then I can get the updates. Sometimes. Opening and closing the document doesn't refresh the view either.

Recreating the site cache doesn't work either and takes too long for large sites.

Dreamweaver cache's the images downloaded on your HTML page outwith the physical site cache. When Live View is used, it draws a live connection from the image hosted on the web and thats why you see the recent image. In Design View, it simply views the cached image that it downloaded the first time - so if you have changed it numerous times on the web, you will not see the change.

You need to clear the image cache. in CS5.5 and on Mac, this can be found in Library > Application Support > Adobe > Dreamweaver CS5.5 > en_US > Configuration > Temp.

I'm on PC, CS6. Have gone to \Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS6\en_US\Configuration\Temp and emptied out the folder. Still no preview. Recreated site cache, nope. Save as a new file. Still nada.

Opening and closing Dreamweaver is the only way to get the preview. Some process on launch refreshes the design view. The funny thing is that in the Temp folder, it had the correct version of the server images, but nothing was displaying in the design view. Even after deleting the temp files and refreshing the design view it still would not preview. Had to open and close the application. Some connection between the temp folder and design view is broken. Again, it's only when the image urls are absolute. Local files are fine.

This is surely a bug. The images *should* reload with Refresh Design View, but they don't.

I agree, it should. I am a little confused though as to what you are expecting to happen. The absolute URL means files are hosted on the web. So this piece from your earlier post:

If I forget to upload the images to the server first, then I lose any preview, it's all broken images.

is perfectly correct. If you don't upload the images, how do you expect them to show?

I am then confused by this one from your latest post:

I'm on PC, CS6. Have gone to \Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS6\en_US\Configuration\Temp and emptied out the folder. Still no preview

How do you mean "no preview"? You should always have a preview, it might just not be the most recent image you uploaded. No preview to me sounds like a bad link. When you close and re-open DW, it wipes out the Temp folder and then starts a new one from scratch the next time you open it up - effectively the same as removing the files manually. Do you have the page online to see if we can replicate the issue?

In my own experience, it does take a little while (3 seconds or so) for the images to appear in Design View. I can speed it up by using Live View.

The facts are a bit murky and conflicting, I'll agree. If there is an absolute link, and if you are connected to the internet, and if the link is correct, you should always see the linked file.

                              • 12. Re: How do I refresh Absolute URL Images?

Hi Rik. Yeah, it sounds a little confusing. I will try to be more clear. When I'm working on a file with absolute links, I do most of the work with local image links, then switch it to the absolute link towards the end of the work. If I save the file before I have uploaded the images to the server (it automatically refreshes on save), I see a broken image placeholder, as one would expect. Then, after uploading the images and refreshing the design view, I do not get any change. When the images are uploaded before the file is saved, the design preview will happen only once. Any further image changes do not refresh.

There is only one shot at a preview. Emptying the cache/temp files does not work to fix the preview refresh. I have to close/reopen Dreamweaver to get a second preview. Not super convenient when I have a dozen files open.

It's not so important which page is used for a test. This has happened on every single file I have edited that uses full, absolute links for images (ex. http://www.daserver.com/images/refreshme.jpg).

Switching back and forth between live view and design view doesn't refresh the design preview either.

Yes, Murray, that is exactly what I would expect, but it is not happening. All connections and links and firewalls are fine, but no update to the absolutely linked file.

Ugh. And, as I discovered today. No internet connection when previewing in design view means broken images and no refresh. Must restart again!

A couple of things that you might like to check:

                                      • Make sure there's a check mark next to View > Display External Files.
                                      • Try turning off the cache for the invidual site (in the Site Setup dialog box, select Advanced Settings > Local Info, and deselect Enable Cache).

I have a vague recollection of discussing this issue with Dreamweaver engineers some time ago. As I recall it, refreshing external files was deliberately made low priority to avoid slowing down other processes within Dreamweaver.

It sounds as though you might be able to make a good business case for adding an option to refresh external files. Submit a feature request through the form at http://adobe.ly/DWBug. When submitting the request, explain why it's important to your workflow. There's no guarantee that the idea will be adopted, but it's worth making a case for it.

Thanks David. This is very helpful. Now it makes sense. I will definitely submit a feature request. The only time I need that feature is when I'm working on email campaigns for clients, which I seem to be doing a lot of lately. I see I'm not the only one either! Thank you.

Please, let this bug be fixed in a future version of Dreamweaver!!  I too create email campaigns and constantly have the same exact problems as "product9". product9, you mentioned earlier in this thread that restarting Dreamweaver fixes the cached image problem for you. For me, that is not the case :-( My Dreamweaver CS5 version (11.0 Build 4993) doesnt even do that - it permanently displays a broken image in design view!!

I posted this nearly FOUR YEARS ago. To not have this BUG fixed is extremely disappointing.

The issue persists with the latest versions of DreamWeaver.

Can we get some action on this? Please?

Going to bump this - it has been an issue for years - it is annoying as heck, and I'm not sure what the problem is. Asking Dreamweaver to refresh files hosted on a live server is not rocket science.

edit: restarting DW doesn't always fix this for me, which makes it 100x annoying.

If you're using old versions of DW (like CS5 from the OP), don't expect any changes. Adobe's focus is on the Cloud versions and the latest, DWCC 2014 (or DW version 14) has some major changes to how Live View works, including being able to edit from within it.

I haven't installed it yet, but I'm guessing that's what the Adobe rep is hinting at in their response.

I wouldn't bet on there being any future updates for the old disk versions of the program. DWCC 2014 is version 14, going back 5 versions (5.0 and 5.5 were separate and DWCS6 disk is separate from DWCS6 Cloud) to update an annoying behavior is generally pretty counter productive for a software company. Usually "update to the current version" is the response you'll end up with when you ask for an old program fix.

It's still a problem with CC 2015. The "refresh design view" still does not work. It's unproductive to have to close the program to clear the cache for the design view.

I fully agree. This is something they should have taken care of long ago.

Restarting the program each time is not an option for me. The only decent work-around I've found is to link my images to local copies during development, then just prior to uploading, doing a find/replace on thepages to remove the root relative link bits and add the absolute paths.

The way I set my newsletters up, I do a F&R on "../images/" and replace it with "http ://www.thedomain.com/images/" then copy the code into whichever service I'm using for the newsletter.

It's an extra step, but it's a simple one.
