1. Re: InDesign CS5 "cannot open" CS4 file cross-platform
P Spier Sep 27, 2010 1:57 PM (in response to pdlavalle)How are you trying to open the file? Did you use File > Open...
What is the file extension?

2. Re: InDesign CS5 "cannot open" CS4 file cross-platform
pdlavalle Sep 27, 2010 2:06 PM (in response to P Spier)Hi Peter!
I tried double clicking the file and using File > Open... both gave me the same message. The file extension is .indd. I'm starting to fear this is really trivial. Could there be problems if I had image boxes linking to images on a different computer?
Thanks

3. Re: InDesign CS5 "cannot open" CS4 file cross-platform
P Spier Sep 27, 2010 2:12 PM (in response to pdlavalle)missing links would throw a missing links error message, but the file should still open. Are you sure you have CS5 on the Mac, and not version 5, which ius CS3? Is there more to the message than just cannot open file?

4. Re: InDesign CS5 "cannot open" CS4 file cross-platform
pdlavalle Sep 27, 2010 2:49 PM (in response to P Spier)I just purchased Design Standard CS5, so I am positive it is CS5. Unfortunately there is not more to the message, so I attached an image for you.
InDesign created a temporary lock file called ~assignment2-1_50im~32ni)8.idlk in the same directory... is that helpful?
edit: I can open the .idml file without problem, but I'm really curious as to what might be happening (so I can avoid this in the future).
double edit: My mother sent me another copy of the same file through e-mail, and now it opens just fine! I originally copied the file to my thumb drive and transferred it that way, perhaps that caused a corruption of some sort? I have no idea, this is totally bizarre to me.

6. Re: InDesign CS5 "cannot open" CS4 file cross-platform
P Spier Sep 27, 2010 2:49 PM (in response to pdlavalle)First, download the 7.0.2 update and see if that solves it. If not, move it to the local hard drive and try again if it's on a server, and finally, rename the file using less than 17 characters. There was a bug on the Mac side that caused problems with long filenames

pdlavalle Sep 27, 2010 2:54 PM (in response to BobLevine)If you (or anyone else) are still interested, here is the original copied to a thumb drive file:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3933683/Assignment2-1_50images.indd
And here is the file that my mother e-mailed to me that opens just fine:

8. Re: InDesign CS5 "cannot open" CS4 file cross-platform
pdlavalle Sep 27, 2010 2:58 PM (in response to P Spier)I already have the 7.0.2 update. After reading another thead, I also tried renaming my file to simply what.indd which still gave me the same error message, and I am not using a server.

9. Re: InDesign CS5 "cannot open" CS4 file cross-platform
P Spier Sep 27, 2010 2:59 PM (in response to pdlavalle)It looks as if the file was damaged in transit. Can happen with thumb drives..

10. Re: InDesign CS5 "cannot open" CS4 file cross-platform
pdlavalle Sep 27, 2010 3:02 PM (in response to pdlavalle)Yeah, I feel a little dumb. I did not realize that thumb drives could do that. I will always e-mail a copy of the file to myself or something from now on.

11. Re: InDesign CS5 "cannot open" CS4 file cross-platform
BobLevine Sep 27, 2010 3:05 PM (in response to pdlavalle)The file is corrupt. You can tell by opening it with a text editor.

P Spier Sep 27, 2010 3:07 PM (in response to pdlavalle)For extra protection, zip the file before emailing.
Thumb drives are usually OK, but sometimes we tend to pull them befor they are quite finished. They also don't do really well when you send them through the wash.

P Spier Sep 27, 2010 3:19 PM (in response to Marijan Tompa)Wow, that is odd. Resaving it in CS4 allowed it to open in CS5 here, too.
